Re: Soil Investigation - St Joseph and Scotch Settlement
Dear Sir:
Attached is a siting instruction plan of each of the above sites showing the location and log of soil test holes. The tests were made with a portable coring drill and the bearing capacity of the soil was not determined.
Conditions at St Joseph are suitablre for a type I building foundation and standard tower foundation.
Conditions at Scotch Settlement (Relocated) will require a type II building foundation and modified tower foundation.
On sites where bedrock is located less than 12 feet below the surface, three test holes are not sufficient to provide the rock profile, if the rock surface is irregular. On irregular surfaces more holes are required to provide four views of the perimeter foundation walls. In the case of Scotch Settlement where the rock is close to the surface three holes will suffice.
The preliminary test holes for Todd Mountain indicate rock 4 feet below the ground surface at the Radar Building. With the apparent irregularly of rock in the area, a minimum of 6 cores will be obtained. Soil borings on this site will commence on 6 March 1961.
Sincerely yours
