Dear Sir:
Re: Your file S10-136-80/5 (JDPG)
Forestry Towers - Northern Ontario
I have your letter of February 9th, 1960 listed eight Ontario Department of Lands and Forests fire lookout towers and enclosing plan of a joint use tower structure which will provide fire observation facilities.
In connection with the tower design, please be advised that we are in agreement with it in principle, since it would appear to provide the necessary observation facilities.
On your list it is indicated that two of the towers namely those in Hele and Errington Townships will not be disturbed. Are we to understand that all the other six will be dismantled and replaced by the new structure?
If this is the case, the six existing towers would become available for erection elsewhere in our tower system if and when required.
We would appreciate advice on this point as it will have a bearing on our future tower purchasing programme.
It should also be mentioned that our existing towers are equipped with low power radiotelephones, amplitude modulated, six watts output and operating on one of six channels in the frequency range 72-76 Mc/s. Where hydro is available these sets are AC operated; otherwise, they are powered by dynamotors operating from six volt automative storage batteries which, in turn, are charged by small gasoline generators. Due to their age, however, the sets are gradually being replaced by 2 watt dry battery operated units having both 46 and 72/76 Mc/s facilities.
We do not imagine that any mutual interference should result but thought it best that you have this information before you.

Chief, Forest Protectionn
