Re: Site Reconnaissance
Gap Filler Radar Station Tobermory
Dear Sir:
As directed in your "Statement of Services", revised 10 July 59, para 9, we submit herewith a brief report on our visit to the above site on 1 September 59.
There was no difficulty in locating the site and we were met by Mr AA Speer, Regional Manager, Department of Transport, Real Estate Branch, who arranged for us to enter the properties. He reported to us that the Ralph property in Lot 46, Concesson I (this is the property described in your site report) would cost $1,000.00, while the Speer property in Lot 46, Concession II, immediately to the South would cost only $200.00. Also, that, in either case, the owners would require that the access road follow the fence on the property line being the line between Concessions I and II. While there is little to choose between the two properties, it is our opinion that the Ralph property as described in your site report is preferable, being more remote from the Speer farmhouse, and should be used in spite of its extra cost. We are, therefore, proceeding on the assumption that the site selected by you on the Ralph property will be used. We have, accordingly, directed our survey party to plant the permanent monuments on this property as shown on the attached sketch. Should you not agree with this decisio, would you please let us know immediately so that the monuments may be relocated.
Our reconnaissance indicates that this is an excellent site served by a good all-weather road which is kept open in winter. It will have a very short access road and the necessary power supply and communications are readily available. No construction difficulties are anticipated and sub-soil conditions are ideal.
Attached as Appendix "A" is a copy of the instructions given our survey party. You will note that we have included tying the base line in with the Department of Highways monuments on Hwy No 6, and also transferring the elevation from a Geodetic bench mark to the monuments on the site. It is considered this work will add much to the completeness of the survey and can be done within the time allocated for the survey of this site.
We also attach as Appendix "B" a copy of the preliminary construction estimate excluding the cost of the tower and building. Foundations for these structures wil be as shown in the standard details for 4000 psf allowable bearing pressure. We assume you will add the cost of the structures to the figures we have prepared.
Should there be any further information we can provide prior to submitting our completed Field Survey Report, please let us know.
Yours truly,
