As requested in your telephone conversation of July 31, 1962 with Mr CH Wren, I am submitting the following report re status of Construction of Gap Filler Stations under the supervision of this Branch Office.

  1. ATIKOKAN

    Original Contract Value - $139,170.50
    Revised Value of Contract - 139,278.55
    Contract Completion Date - July 31/62
    Estimated Completion Date - Sept 15/62

    Status as of August 3, 1962: Clearing and grubbing completed. Access road completed. Tower foundations completed and taken over on DCL 51 signed July 18, 1962. Concrete foundations for Power & Accommodation Building and Radar Building completed. Steelox framing and siding of Power & Accommodation Building - 90% done. Radar Building - 70% done. Electrical and mechanical rough-in partially done. Materials for security fencing are on site.

    Approximate value of the contract completed - $76,000.00
    (55% of the revised contract value)
    Approximate cancellation charges - $6,000.00

    RECOMMENDATIONS-

    It is suggested to complete two buildings structurally and lock them securely. Electrical and mechanical installations could be cancelled. A gate or a barricade should be erected at the beginning of the access road. Security fencing on the sites could be erected or materials stored on the site.

  2. MANITOUWADGE

    Original Contract Value - $90,478.13
    Revised Value of Contract - 92,167.73
    Contract Completion Date - Oct 5/62
    Estimated Completion Date - Nov 1/62

    Status as of August 3, 1962: Clearing and grubbing - 80% done. Road sub-grade - 75% done. No work done on buildings proper, except for clearing the site and blasting of rock as specified.

    Approximate value of the contract completed - $32,000.00
    (35% of the revised contract value)
    Approximate cancellation charges - $3,500.00

    RECOMMENDATIONS -

    It is suggested to complete road sub-grade and install culverts where required to protect it from washouts.

  3. MARATHON

    Original Contract Value - $234,467.00
    Revised Value of Contract - 233,505.59
    Contract Completion Date - July 31/62
    Estimated Completion Date - Oct 15/62

    Status as of August 3, 1962: Clearing and grubbing completed. Road sub-grade 90% done. Tower foundations completed and taken over on DCL 51 signed July 18, 1962. No work done on buildings except site clearing. However, Steelox Building components supplied by RCAF are stored at the Contractor's construction camp near CPR line. The Contractor-supplied Steelox components stored also in the same place. Steel plates for 50,000 gallon fuel tank are at the construction camp. 2,000 gallon fuel tank at the camp also.

    Approximate value of the contract completed - $135,500.00
    (58% of the revised contract value)
    Approximate cancellation charges - $7,500.00

    RECOMMENDATIONS

    I suggest that road sub-grade be completed. Steelox Building components could be sent to RCAF Storage Depot.

  4. NIPIGON

    Original Contract Value - $213,378.93
    Revised Value of Contract - 249,065.31
    Contract Completion Date - August 15/62
    Estimated Completion Date - Oct 15/62

    Status as of August 3, 1962: Clearing and grubbing completed. Sub-grade for access road approximately 75% completed. Three wooden bridges - 90% complete. One wooden bridge being built now. No work done on buildings or tower foundations with exception of removal of overburden and drilling rock for foundation anchors. Steelox Bldg components supplied by RCAF stored in town of Nipigon. (Close to CPR RR).

    Approximate value of the contract completed - $145,000.00
    (58 1/2% of the revised contract value)
    Approximate cancellation charges - $7,000.00

    RECOMMENDATIONS -

    It is suggested that all wooden bridges be completed as materials for them are all on site. Steelox components should be sent back to RCAF Storage Depot. All other work should be terminated immediately.
