The building in the center of this photo was one block east and one block south of Rosie's Gasthaus. It is the backyard milkhouse and small apartment that was occupied, at that time, by CWO Patrick Dennison Liggett, his wife and two adopted children, while he waited for base housing on Wurburg.
The owner of the buiding was a little old former German GI named Johanns (Hans) Goebel and his wifes name was Greta. Hans was embarrassed at having to ask the Liggett family for 180dm a month for rent ($45). Mr. Goebel, a staunch Catholic, was about 80 years old in 1962.
At this time, my landlord, Herr Karl Schuern, was having me pay 200dm a month, which included a private bath tub/hot water, a private toilet, a REFRIGERATOR (probably stolen from the base) a covered parking area for my Austin Healey 300 mkll, and gas heat. Not too bad for $50 American.
