Hugh Lester Campbell
CBE, CD (1908-1987)
Commissioned in the RCAF in 1931, Hugh Campbell helped organize the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan (1939), commanded a flying school, then served overseas in Britain, North Africa, and Italy. This work was recognized by his being made a Commander, Order of the British Empire (CBE) as well as by two Czechoslovak decorations. Following the war he held appointments of increasing importance, including Air Officer Commanding, No. 1 Air Division, Europe (1952-1955) and Chief of Air Staff (1957-1962). After his retirement he was Commissioner of the Northwest Territories and prominent in the St. John Ambulance Society.
