1963 – 2 Wing - Ren L'Ecuyer

Details:

29 July 1963 - G/C RE MacBride, DFC, CD

Comments:

G/C RE MacBride was the Commanding Officer at 2 Wing, Grostenquin France at the time of his death.

Additional Comments by Dale Kilshaw:

The Group Captain had been suffering from stomach pains for a number of days. It appears that his condition was not diagnosed properly - and he ultimately experienced a burst appendix which resulted in his death at age 44.

Additional Comments by Ted de Bourcier:

I have no idea about the link between his initials "RE" and Sam - we always called him Sammy, I'd bet that he had a real name he didn't like. It was well understood that he was about to be one of the "rockets" destined for high places. He was extremely pleasant to talk to and wanted to know everything that was going on with us sprogs and everyone at our level thought the sun rose and set on him.As for his demise; he was swung into hospital with severe internal pains. The gossip in the mess was that in trying to make him comfortable the medics disguised a case of pancreatitis and he had to be whisked off, too late apparently, to Ramstein. I have also heard the Appendicitis/Perotenitis story, but the one I personally remember was pancreatitis.
