Support Unit – Metz France
3 Dec 62
Officers Senior Qualifying examinations were held from 3 Dec to 7 Dec 62. Thirty two candidates wrote with a 73.2% pass rate.
11 Dec 62
This date was the official closing out of Labry. The vehicles were all brought to SU Metz for distribution to the Wings and Canada.
21 Jan 63
Officers Junior Qualifying examinations were written from 21 Jan to 25 Jan 63. Eight candidates wrote with a 78.3% pass rate.
4 Feb 63
G/C JP DaVignon, DRA/RC made his staff visit to this unit.
27 Feb 63
Colonel Barr (Postings and Careers) of the Surgeon General’s Staff with G/C Nilson, Medical Advisor Canadian Joint Staff, visited the dispensary and interviewed all officers.
1 Mar 63
Effective 1 Mar 63, 109 vehicles were transferred from 2 Wing to SU Metz for use by 601 Squadron.
8 Apr 63
Brigadier Baird, Director General of Dental Services from Ottawa, visited 5 Dental Clinics.
8 May 63
The CofS, A/C DAR Bradshaw, made the annual AOC’s inspection of the unit.
19 – 22 May 63
The vehicle safety check lane under the direction of Mr. Laybourn of the Highway Safety Branch of the Ontario Department of Transport was set up at SU Metz. Total number of cars checked was 460 of which 51.1% failed the test. The Supply Section, in addition to its normal operation was involved in returning to Canada material surplus to requirement due to disbandment of 61 Squadron, also 280 tons of personal baggage was shipped to Canada. The passing winter has been the most severe in the history of the Support Unit with extreme temperatures causing many heating problems. This was also aggravated by the water shortage which required the service of one French and two Canadian vehicles to supplement the supply from December to late February.
23 May 63
W/C MC McArthur, Chief Matron Tri-Service, made a visit to the MIR and to Fort Jury.
24 May 63
Fifteen representatives of the Support Unit RC congregation attended the annual military pilgrimage at Lourdes.
