Comments by Raymond Hossey
– Alsask originally had an FPS-507 (transmitter and receiver). However in 1978-1979 we converted the transmitter and modulator to an FPS-6 but retained the FPS-507 receivers. This was necessary as parts for the Canadian built Marconi FPS-507 Transmitter were in short supply. After the successful flight trials were complete, MWO Harry Ennis called to congratulate my crew and he asked what we should call it. Someone in jest replied "How about FPS-6X?" To our surprise, the designation was made official.
I left the service in 1980 and can only assume that other sites subsequently designated FPS-6X were originally FPS-507 sites and that they also had their transmitters converted to the FPS-6 while retaining the original FPS-507 receivers.
