Pinetree Line Construction

There are a number of documents available which pertain to the construction of sites which formed the Pinetree Line. In my opinion, the most informative documentation pertaining to Pinetree Line construction would have to be the "Pinetree Line Progress Reports". The Pinetree Line Progress Reports cover the time period 1952 to 1955.

There were, however, other periods of construction which were as equally important. The second generation Pinetree Line radar station is an example. This group consisted of new units being constructed at Alsask SK – 1962, Chibougamau QC – 1962, Dana SK – 1964, Gypsumville MB – 1964, Moosonee ON – 1962, Penhold AB – 1964 and Yorkton SK – 1963.

There is an element of irony involved as while the second generation of Pinetree Line radar stations were being constructed and becoming operational between 1962 and 1964 there were a number of first generation Pinetree Line radar stations which were being closed coast to coast. Some of these locations included Beaverbank NS – 1964, Edgar ON – 1964, Frobisher Bay NWT – 1961, Parent QC – 1964, Resolution Island NWT – 1961, Red Cliff (St. John’s) NF – 1961 and St. Sylvestre QC – 1964.

We have also been able to obtain copies of correspondence, mostly in Memorandum format, that provides detail pertaining to Pinetree Line construction.
