Detachment 1 of the 1876th Radio Relay Squadron was located in an area called White Hills which was part of Pepperrell AFB, which in turn was located in St. John’s NF. There were many other lodger units at Pepperrell AFB, one of which was the ADCC which was responsible for all AC&W Squadrons located in Newfoundland and Labrador.
In most cases, the large sized antenna - which were an integral part of the Pole Vault communications system - were located reasonably close to the sea thereby making them a prime target for severe storm activity.
We have been able to obtain a photograph that shows the Troposcatter communications antenna which were located at Pepperrell AFB. It is hoped that this photograph will bring back some memories to those who served in Detachment 1.
