Unfortunately, I find myself with no photos from my brief stay at 51 AC&W Squadron, Waterfall, in Comox BC, although my memory is fairly clear on certain things. I was stationed as a Radar Technician at 51 AC&W Squadron between August 1956 and April 1957.
F/O Laakso was the Radar Officer and W/O Wiltshire was the Radar Warrant Officer. In August 1956, my Crew Chief was Cpl. Roy (Doc) Forges. I do not remember too many other names from this period although LAC Mar Oishi comes to mind, as does Cpl. Dave Garraway. LAC Fred Parker and I both received our postings from Comox to Tofino in Match 1957.
The time I spent at Comox was unremarkable in any way, except for the weather, which left a lot to be desired. The radar equipment was not difficult to deal with. We had an aging CPS-5D for search and a couple of TPS-3’s to serve as height finders.
I do not wish to insult any Food Services personnel who may read this note, but honestly, the chow was not that great. Living in "H" huts was not unusual, but the noise of Lancasters and CF-100’s in the wee hours did nothing to improve our rest.
Whether we needed other reasons to post out or not will never been known, but all too soon, I found myself on a bus heading for Port Alberni and onwards to my next posting at RCAF Station Tofino.
