The following is a summary of the major events which took place at RCAF Station Edgar, Ontario, during the period 1 Jun to 31 Dec 63.
- Operations
: Effective 2000 hours 4 Sep 63, 31 Radar Squadron became operationally responsible to Detroit NORAD Sector vice Syracuse NORAD Sector.
- Training
: Two training courses for DMCC Officers were given by the staff of 31 Radar Squadron during October and November. A total of 48 Officers were trained during the courses. Each course was of three weeks duration.
- Technical
: There were no major changes in technical equipment.
- Administration
: On 20 Dec 63 W/C JH Dempster handed command of RCAF Station Edgar over to W/C E Wilson. W/C Dempster retired from the Air Force after 23 years service.
- Organization
: With the retirement of F/O EM Boyce, the positions of PAdO and CAdO merged under the new PAdO , F/O AF Parker. Detachment "A" Ottawa NORAD Sector, Manual back-up for the Ottawa NORAD Sector Headquarters at North Bay, phased out at 1500Z 2 Oct 63. Detachment "A" ONS was a lodger unit on RCAF Station Edgar and was opened in 1952.
- Official Visits and Inspections
: There were several official visits during the past six months. Those of major interest were:
- 18 Jun – Inspection of RCAF Station Edgar by A/V/M MM Hendrick, AOC ADC;
- 17 Jul – Narcotic controlled drug audit by Mr. E Wilson, auditor for Division of Narcotic Control;
- 29 Aug – Colonel S Grashio, Deputy Commander of Ottawa NORAD Sector SAGE, North Bay, was accompanied by G/C Williams on a visit to Detachment "A";
- 12 Sep – Twenty-four DMCC Officers (Radio Navigators) arrived for a one day familiarization visit from Centralia;
- 16 Sep – Fourteen Officers and a WO2 from the SCEO’s Course in Centralia visited the unit. The purpose of the visit was to gain a better understanding of CE Section responsibilities at a LRR station;
- 18 Sep – Twenty-four DMCC Officers (Radio Navigators) arrived for a one day visit from Centralia. The same tour and briefings were given as those on 12 Sep;
- S/L EB Maddix, newly appointed ADC Matron for this area, visited from the Regional Surgeon Office at Oakville; and
- 6 Dec – A/V/M Hendrick, AOC ADC, and A/V/M Harvey Commander NNR, attended a Farewell Dinner for the retiring of CO of RCAF Station Edgar, W/C JH Dempster.
- Recreation
: RCAF Station Edgar was declared winner of the NORA Commander’s Trophy.
- Public Relations
: Continuous contact has been maintained with the Barrie Examiner and Barrie TV Station – CKVR. Releases have been frequently sent out concerning retiring members, official visits, and other newsworthy events. In addition, the swimming pool has been utilized by a number of community clubs including the Barrie CGIT Group, Barrie Royal Canadian Sea Cadets, Barrie Central Collegiate and the Collingwood Royal Canadian Air Cadets.
