Auxiliary Support.

Auxiliary weekend training was carried out regularly with the following squadrons:

Courses - Ground Training

Three officers attended the proficiency course at Cold Lake, one at Yuma, Arizona, and two attended the Weapons Proficiency Course at Tyndall AFB. The following courses were conducted at this unit:

Chess Match Exercise. Four Chess Match Exercises were conducted within this period with this Unit participating, having a high degree of successfully completed intercepts.

Big Blast Exercise ECM/ECCM. Several Big Blast Exercises were conducted covering the period of this report. These exercises provided maximum ECM training. SAC Bomb Wing were assigned to Air Defence Sectors/Divisions. A great deal of operational experience was gained by those participating in these exercises.

Counter Punch Exercise. Five Counter Punch Exercises were held at this Unit and provided valuable practice to Intercept Controllers.

Profile Exercise. Five Profile Exercises were carried out by this Unit in conjunction with the 30th and 32nd Air Divisions. A great deal of experience in controlling USAF fighter a/c was involved.

Green Salad Exercise. Green Salad Exercise was conducted to test a new type of homing device for AW Fighter a/c.

Numerous other small scale exercises occurred during the time this report covers. Little or no tactical action was taken by this unit. Cats Eye, Cue Ball, Fish Barrel, Cribbage Board, Muscle Flexer.

15 Dec 58

DND Teletype circuits 1211 and 1226 were established to Syracuse SAGE on this date. The installation marks the first time that information was passed direct from this Station to the SAGE computer.

27 Jan 59

Erection of rigid radome on the Arctic Tower. (AN/FPS-6). RCA Victor erected rigid radome on tower AB-259 in accordance with CD875412. This took 7 days during which the AN/FPS-6 was off the air for 182 hours.

WO1 Moodie, CMU, reported in for construction of Butler Building for 3 ADCC.

Commencement of RIP 1958/59. Comstock Electric, Ottawa, arrived on the Unit to carry out work in accordance with their contract which is part of RIP. Phase 1 of this work consisted of removing obsolete power wiring, pressurization equipment, de-icing, etc.

19739 W/C WA Hockney, CD, TOS Station Edgar from AFHQ.

10 Apr 59

249 W/C H Bryant handed over the command of RCAF Station Edgar to 19739 W/C WA Hockney.

14 Apr 59

22110 S/L JH Cochrane, assumed Acting Command of RCAF Station Edgar on the departure of W/C Hockney to Tyndall AFB.

15 Apr 59

249 W/C H Bryant commenced annual, special and rehabilitation leave - total 254 days.

24 Apr 59

Transfer of Radar Officer, F/L AS Atkinson, to ASC HQ.

2 May 59

Removal of the pressurized radome from the main tower. (AN/FPS-3). Removal of the radome necessitated lowering of the AN/FPS-3 antenna to prevent damage when the radome was deflated. Removal of the radome was accomplished in 12 hours.

20 May 59

A Butler Building has recently been erected approximately 1000 feet from the Main Operations Building. 3 ADCC are scheduled to occupy this building in the near future. Two one-hundred pair, plastic covered cables were laid underground to this building in preparation for the communications installation. The work was carried out under a contract with the local Bell Telephone office.

25 May 59

Eyewasher Exercise. Eyewasher Exercise was a large scale NORAD Exercise. The purpose of this exercise was to test the DEW, MCL and Pinetree Radar Defence Chain.
