Memories of Frobisher Bay
My name is Sheldon Lee and I arrived at Frobisher Bay in March 1953. I worked as a civilian carpenter on the foundations and completion of all the buildings at the Upper Base - which would eventually be "home" to the 926th AC&W Sqadron. It should be noted that there were over 400 Atlantic Canadians involved with the construction of Site N-31.
American and Canadian military personnel were there mostly in an Administrative function.
"Tent City" was occupied by these civilian workers between 1951 and 1953. It is worthy to mention that American military personnel were involved in most of the blasting for the Site preparation.
I was the person who walked back to the lake located behind Site N-31 in June 1953 to obtain a sample of water. This was subsequently approved to serve as the water supply for the Site during the years it was in operation. I am of the understanding that thie same water supply is used today in the new community of Iqaluit (formerly Frobisher Bay).
