AN/FPS-93A – Two Channel Prime Radar, AN/FPS-90 Radar Height Finder, 0A840A/GPX-7A Radar Identification Set, AN/GPX-27 Interference Blanker Group, AN/UPX-14 Radar Interrogator Responder, AN/GRR-7 Single Channel UHF Receivers, AN/GRT-3 Single Channel UHF Transmitters, AN/GRC-27 Multi Channel UHF Transmitter-Receivers, AN/FRT-502 Dual Channel VHF Transmitters, AN/URG-60 Single Channel VHF Receivers.

Operations:

The Melville MORAD Control Center was re-designated as a NORAD Surveillance Station and the mission of the section changed when the weapons control was completely deleted during the past quarter. Detachment I of the 37^th Air Division was deactivated and all interceptors returned to their home bases. With this mission change a corresponding manning change deleted four of five officers and several weapons technicians. This unit no longer possesses a control capability and many requirements dealing with the weapons control and training in this area have been deleted.

1^st Lt. Allan S Creighton replaced Captain Ralph A Schacker as operations officer and all other weapons controller officers departed PCS, leaving officer manning at five authorized and one assigned. Enlisted manning presently stands at 85 authorized and 62 assigned. The one civilian position in the section, Illustrator, is vacant.

During this quarter the operations section participated in 7 live exercises, 6 STP exercised and 5 live ECM exercises. There were 3,808 flight plans processed, 12 unknown tracks in the complex, 269 practice intercepts with 77 sorties flown and 439 synthetic intercepts accomplished.

Operations also completed all pending lesson plans plus a five lesson plan on air surveillance procedures based on NORADM 55-1. All assigned personnel met annual ADCM 50-5 training requirements. Sixteen personnel were upgraded to operational ready status and only one man in the section remains in training status. Several individuals achieved a dual rating this period. Due to the mission change a complete review of OOI’s and applicable publications has been initiated. Completion of this project will depend upon further definition of the UMD and the units mission.

Communications and Electronics:

During this reporting period personnel manning stands at 2 officers authorized, 2 assigned; 42 enlisted men authorized, 39 assigned; 1 civilian authorized, 1 assigned. A new rotary coupler for the AN/FPS-90 was installed and equipment operation from that time has been excellent. A new magnetron tube, QK338A, was installed in the AN/FPS-90 also. The old high powered tube failed after 2,760 hours of radiation because of a puncture in the output window. A new transformer, T-1301 was placed in Channel 1 of the AN/FPS-93. The old transformer had developed a short circuit in one of its tube sockets. Three UPA-35 Plan Position Indicators were shipped off site per instructions and the AN/GPS-T4 will be shipped as soon as disposition instructions are received. The operational requirement for the AN/GPS-T4 no longer exists in the unit. The 02 cable installation between radio building and operations building has been completely repaired by GEEIA personnel. All AS-505 radio antennas have been removed and sent to salvage per disposition instructions.

Civil Engineering:

The following projects were completed by mobile maintenance team during this reporting period: work order MEL 128-66, erect ducts at BMEWS; work order MEL 109-68, repair station water tank; work order MEL 104-67, install security bars; work order MEL 108-66, replace hot and cold water pipes. Work order MEL 116-66, alter stairways in buildings S-1570 and S-1571 is still 70% complete and work order MEL 103-66, maintenance of heating system is 53% complete. O and M project status is as follows: work order MEL 3-7, construct water line, is under design; work order MEL 3-8, paint various facilities, is under design and work order MEL 4-8, maintain roadways and parking areas is also under design. The projects have been justified and a status is expected in the first quarter of FY 69. The Canadian Marconi Corporation replaced a flywheel bearing and clutch assembly on the Number 2 No-Break system. The Hartford Bailer Inspector made a semi-annual inspection of the Steam Plant and found it to be satisfactory. A work order has been initiated to install stop check valves in the distribution system. There were 4 personnel losses and 4 gains in the section for the quarter.

Station Support:

Because of austere funding now in effect, all items except those which are mission essential or deal with health and welfare are not being procured. All requirements are submitted to 37^th for approval prior to submission to Base Supply. Base Supply’s conversion to the UNIVAC 1050-II system was completed and was returned to normal operation. A transfer of Expanded Range Bench Stocks and 37^th AD Minimum Level from the CEM area to the warehouse adjacent to Material Control was accomplished. Effective 1 November 1967, the responsibility of the Motor Pool was transferred from the Civil Engineering Officer to the Station Support Officer. Personnel wise, the Motor Pool lost one military driver due to reassignment. No replacement has yet been received. Programs have been initiated in the areas of daily vehicle inspections, also at the present time coordination is taking place with the Motor Pool on Goose Air Base to receive authority to be able to draw out routine type items in daily maintenance use on assigned vehicles.

Food Service:

Several new pieces of equipment were placed on order, including a coffee urn, toasters, meat slicer, and a dish washing machine. Most of this equipment should arrive on station during January and February. New tables for all table and chair back covers bearing the Squadron emblem were also received and put into use. During the past quarter one military personnel was lost due to reassignment and no replacement is presently due in. Two mess attendants were lost during the past quarter, and as of 1 January 1968, no replacements have arrived.

Administration:

The mission change experienced this quarter has had far-reaching effect on the unit. The exact effects will not be known until a new unit manning document is published and exact operational responsibilities are spelled out by higher headquarters. No inspections or evaluations took place during the quarter. A complete turnover of administrative personnel in the orderly room occurred.

Medical:

No exceptional occurrences took place in the medical section. Routine sanitation inspections produced satisfactory results and there were no personnel changes for the reporting period.
