Historical Report
Operations Section
12 AC&W Squadron
Mont Apica, PQ,
1 June 1956 to 30 November 1956

1 Jun 56

Friday – One unknown aircraft appeared at 1546 GMT. A fighter was scrambled from St. Hubert but the scramble was cancelled by Largo who received a revision of the flight plan which was late in coming to us. 440 Squadron aircraft left today on first leg of trip to Cold Lake. F/O Dockendorff left also for Cold Lake to take part in rocket-firing exercises. F/L McLean left on leave.

2 Jun 56

Saturday – An unknown aircraft appeared at 1227 GMT. As Bagotville was below VFR a fighter was scrambled by Crystal from St. Hubert. Identification was made under Scooter control. The unknown aircraft was a L1049 Constellation whose flight plan was delayed. A second unknown aircraft appeared at 1641 GMT. A Bagotville CF-100 was put on five minute readiness but scramble was made by Largo from St. Hubert. The aircraft was later identified by flight plan revision. A third unknown aircraft appeared at 1847 GMT. Rhino 43 and 35 were diverted and interceptions were completed under Umpire control. The aircraft was a L1049 Constellation. Beanpole exercise was delayed again. Aircraft to enter Canada at 0035 GMT on 5 June. F/O Brown left for course at Moody AFB, Georgia.

3 Jun 56

Sunday – A great deal of weather appearing on scope today. Communications affected.

4 Jun 56

Monday – F/O Tetley returned from three weeks TD at 1 ADCC Lac St. Denis.

5 Jun 56

Tuesday – Faker exercise involving Bagotville, Scooter, Scabbard.

6 Jun 56

Wednesday – Large scale Sector exercise. Targets for Scabbard totaled nine aircraft. Target callsign was "Bakelite" in two sections of "Red" and "Yellow". Fighters assigned for Scabbard control totaled six aircraft in two sections of three each. Fighter callsigns were "Rhino Red" and "Rhubarb Green". Rhino Red attempted three runs but none were successful. Rhubarb Green attempted one run only as the other two aircraft in the section aborted. This run was also unsuccessful as the fighter locked on to wrong aircraft. Tactical results of exercise were four missed intercepts, nil missions accomplished. Although the tactical results were not good, the controlling and tracking was well-executed and much beneficial experience was gained for future exercises. Target tracks weaved considerably. To add to the days excitement, there were three unknown aircraft, although fortunately none appeared during the exercise. Two occurred before the exercise at 1541 and 1654 GMT, and one after at 2003 GMT. The last two of these unknown aircraft were identified friendly before scramble action was taken, but the first was intercepted by Rhino 43, who identified it as a Pan-American C-97.

7 Jun 56

Thursday – An unknown aircraft appeared in Crowbar’s area at 1200 GMT. Rhino 43 was scrambled under our control and the aircraft was identified as a Pan-American DC-6. An ECM exercise scheduled by Largo for today was cancelled because of aircraft unserviceability.

8 Jun 56

Friday – Three unknown aircraft appeared at 1140, 1205 and 1441 GMT. The first two, of which the first was in Crowbar’s area, were identified by late flight plans before scramble action was taken. The third unknown aircraft also appeared in Crowbar’s area and Rhino 39, who was up on an air test, was diverted. He obtained a contact but had to return to base because of insufficient fuel to carry out a run. In the meantime, Rhubarb 10 was scrambled for Crowbar control, but was handed back to us without completing an intercept as the unknown aircraft’s speed was too high to chase and catch him before running out of fuel. During this time Crowbar identified the unknown aircraft by late flight plan. Four Auxiliary officers from 2452 Squadron in Quebec City arrived for the weekend and controller training.

9 Jun 56

Saturday – Air Force Day. Dependents visited the Tower where their tour commenced with coffee and doughnuts in Room 100. S/L Yarnell gave a lecture on what operations are all about, followed by tours of the radar and operational sections. Although the weather was not too favourable, there was a good turnout and all seemed well-impressed. There was a fly-past of four CF-100 aircraft from Bagotville in box formation, but only one pass was made because of cloud, and although formation was good, visibility from the observers position on the ground limited appreciation of the display.

11 Jun 56

Monday – At 1600 GMT Rhino 36 was scrambled on an aircraft flying left hand triangles. It was identified as one Anson on a photo mission, and in no difficulties, although three complete triangles were made. Two aircraft were scrambled on Keystone "Canteen" aircraft. Rhino 49 completed an intercept and identified the aircraft as one B-47, but Rhubarb fighter broke off. Warning telling from Crystal was not adequate and track was not picked up by us until over Quebec. No tactical action was ordered on "Jolly" aircraft overfly. "Umpire" callsign changed to "Snowshoe" effective today.

12 Jun 56

Tuesday – Two sections of three aircraft each were assigned to intercept two Keystone aircraft. "Beanpole" mission. Rhino Blue aircraft all missed their intercepts because of late scramble due to communication difficulty with Bagotville tower. Rhubarb Red aircraft accomplished two VIPs but one aircraft in the section had to abort because of oxygen trouble. Crowbar had two unknown tracks but identification was made before scramble action was taken. ECM exercise scheduled for today was postponed.

13 Jun 56

Wednesday – A sort lived emergency occurred today when Rhino 47’s fuel pressure failed. He displayed Mode 4 IFF but landed at Bagotville safely. Two unknown aircraft appeared at 1507 and 1605 GMT. Rhubarb 17, on PI’s was diverted and first aircraft was identified as a Norseman. The second was identified as an Anson 5 by late flight plan although Rhino 37 on PI’s, was diverted but was unable to complete the intercept through loss of contact.

14 Jun 56

Thursday – Two distress signals were received from aircraft in Snowshoe’s and Scooter’s areas respectively. The first landed safely at Quebec City before any action was taken, and the second, in the Casey area, was scrambled upon when observed to be flying triangles. Rhubarb 21 reported seeing the aircraft ditch in the lake and two occupants emerge on the wing and swim to shore.

15 Jun 56

Friday – Three unknown aircraft appeared today at 0946, 1250 and 1830 GMT. The first two were identified prior to scramble, and the third was assigned for interception by Rhino Red section diverted from PI’s. Rhino Red was called off by Largo before runs were made, as interception was to be made by Blacksheep aircraft.

16 Jun 56

Saturday – Puritan 1 (W/C Duncan) on cross country flight from Val d’Or – Bagotville – St. Hubert – Val d’Or in a C-45, was to be intercepted on instruction from Largo. Scabbard fighters consisted of three, two and three aircraft in sections. Callsigns were "Rhino Red", "Rhubarb Blue", and "Rhino Yellow". Red section had two missions accomplished, one missed intercept; Blue had one mission accomplished and one missed intercept; and Yellow section all missed because of control transmitter unserviceability.
