Monday – A new controller – F/O DH Wood – reported in today, fresh from the course at Tyndall AFB Florida. Also today, F/O’s Griba and Parker left Mont Apica to take the course at Tyndall. The first game of the inter-section Softball League was played this evening.

Wednesday – Two civilians came on the unit from England in connection with the "Burnt Cork" trials, and four officers were over from station Bagotville for cross training.

Thursday – S/L Hassall and Mr. Heaton-Jones, both from the UK, arrived on the unit for the forthcoming "Burnt Cork" exercise and a welcoming party was held for them this evening in the Officers Mess.

Friday – Freezing temperatures this morning and everywhere was white with a light covering of snow which disappeared by the afternoon. The Commanding Officer of station St. Sylvestre, W/C Lecomte, was the Guest of Honour this evening at a Dining-In Night in the Sergeants Mess.

Sunday – The usual Church services were held with the minister from Kenogami on the unit to conduct the Protestant service.

9 Jun 58

Monday – F/O JAG Babineau, a new controller, reported in today. The CO, W/C Snider, played second base position this evening in the inter-section softball league and the Headquarters team beat the Combined Supply Section 43 – 0.

11 Jun 58

Wednesday – F/L Rushton, Mr. Gibson and Mr. Corcoran all of AFHQ were on the station for the day only to observe "Burnt Cork" exercise.

Thursday – F/O Peter Greaves, RAF, reported in today as replacement for S/L Hassall of the UK team, as the S/L has been stricken with appendicitis.

Saturday – Air Force Day. The following programme of events was held in commemoration:

1300-1645 hours

Continuous movie in Station Theatre

1300-1645 hours

Static displays in Rec. Hall of Fire Fighting equipment, model aircraft, amateur radio, Search & Rescue equipment, Bell Telephone, Telecommunications. Display of Mobile equipment outside.

1400-1445 hours

Swimming display held in indoor pool.

1500 hours

Band Concert given by Royal 22nd Regiment from Quebec City.

2100-0100 hours

Dance in Rec. Hall – semi-formal, buffet.

Refreshments were provided from a booth and a meal could be obtained in the Airmen’s Dining Room from 1730 – 1845 hours for fifty cents. Both the scheduled Fly Past from station Bagotville and the Lac St. Jean League ball game had to be cancelled because of snow, which fell all day. However, the RAF Valiant did fly over the station.

Sunday – The bus taking the midnight shift workers up to the Tower did not get up until 3 am owing to the snow and freezing rain making the road extremely hazardous.

Monday – There was several inches of snow around today.

Tuesday – The station was visited by Archbishop Roy from Quebec – the Roman Catholic Bishop for the three armed forces. He was accompanied by W/C Gallagher (RC ADC Chaplain), Father Brochu (personal secretary), and F/L Mallet the RC Chaplain from Station Bagotville. The Archbishop conducted a confirmation service for the Roman Catholic children.

Wednesday – F/O RV Furneaux – Support Officer for 2452 Aux. Squadron Quebec – F/L Cote, F/L Tousigant, F/L Goulet were up from Quebec City for a meeting to discuss plans for the auxiliary summer camp here at Mont Apica. F/L’s LA Webster and DC Farrell were over today from Bagotville on GCI liaison.

Thursday – The Mitchell aircraft was over both this morning and afternoon for the airspray to combat the Black Flies during the coming summer.

Friday – W/C TA Anderson and Dr. JJ Conn from ADC and Lt. DB Steele (RCN) and F/L Shubaly from AFHQ, were on the station for the day for "Burnt Cork" trials.

Saturday – W/C W Rodger – Command Protestant Chaplain – arrived on the unit today to take the Sunday services. The Station Chaplain, F/L WJ Lord, having gone to London Ontario, on 31 May for one month Padre’s Conference.

Monday – F/L Williams (ADCHQ) arrived today on TD while the SAO, F/L WL Stewart, goes on one months leave. A new controller – F/O CW Gordon – reported in from Tyndall today.

Tuesday – F/L WD Loney from ADC came in for Beacon trials this week.

Wednesday – S/L Robertson and a party from AFHQ were on the station today as observers for "Burnt Cork" trials.

Friday – We had two promotions announced today. F/O WL Worthy and F/O DJ Cordukes were promoted to the rank of Flight Lieutenant effective Jul 1st.

Monday – S/L LL Mock (CTSO) president of TEB Failures board held today.

Tuesday through Friday – S/L DJ Dewan (COpsO) was the acting CO during the absence of W/C Snider who was getting his flying time in with S/L Mock, the CTSO.

Thursday – Mr. Lowney of the United Kingdom was on the station just for the day as an observer in connection with "Burnt Cork" exercise.

Tuesday – Command Food Services officer – S/L McKergow – arrived on the unit today.

Wednesday – A party of 34 officers under W/C ER Long were on the station today from Ottawa as observers for "Burnt Cork" exercise. There were representatives of all three Canadian services and USAF included in the group. The ASWelO – F/O Tracy – was in from Command today also.

Tuesday – Junior Officers Promotion Board held today. The CO being President and S/L Dewan and F/L Fernie the members.

Wednesday – A Search & Rescue field party under the direction of F/O MG Abbott left today for the Lac St. Jean area for three days. S/L Campbell was over for the day from Station Bagotville. S/L LL Mock, CTSO, was SOS today.

Friday – Personnel of 2452 AC&W Auxiliary Squadron arrived on the station today from Quebec City, for two weeks summer training.

Tuesday – F/C Wensall and WO Smyth of ADC CE Branch, arrived today for several days inspection of station sanitation facilities, sewage, pump, etc.

Sunday – The first group of Auxiliary personnel departed and a second group reported in from Quebec.

Monday – The new CTSO – S/L RC Keele – and his family arrived on camp today.

29 Jul 58

Tuesday – Mr. Denman (DENGC) from AFHQ on the unit today for inspection of drainage around the new civilian quarters.

Thursday – A group of approximately 30 Air/Obs from Winnipeg, under training, visited the station today, coming over from Station Bagotville. They toured the tower and departed after lunch. Operation "Burnt Cork" completed.

Friday – The COpsO – S/L Dewan – left the station today on one months annual leave. F/L’s Machen and Montrose acting in his place.

Wednesday – A security alert was sounded this evening.

Saturday – S/L RAF Currie, Chaplain (P), from ADC arrived on the station today to take the Sunday services.

Monday – F/O JM Lapointe (Accounts) ADCHQ arrived here today for audit inspection.

Thursday – A red letter day for the personnel on this station – they are paving the highway outside camp and today have reached the camp gate. An improvement which will benefit all, and an event which has been eagerly anticipated.

Tuesday – Twelve CGE personnel arrived for a period of ten days for the annual radar equipment overhaul.

20 Aug 58

Wednesday – W/C Snider received word that he is transferred to ADCHQ (SOPlans) effective 30 Sep 58.

21 Aug 58

Thursday – The CO and his family departed on ten days leave. The CTSO – S/L Keele – assumed command of the unit in the absence of W/C Snider.

23 Aug 58

Saturday – S/L R Currie, Chaplain (Protestant) from ADCHQ arrived on the station to conduct the Sunday services. The SMO, F/L Rutherford, was TOS again after attending the Officers Basic Training Course at Centralia and going out to BC on leave.

30 Aug 58

Saturday – The Canadair Variety Show entertained station personnel in the Recreation Hall this evening. Everyone appreciates having "live" entertainment.

Monday – Labor Day holiday. Sgt. Slater, the NCO i/c AFP, SOS today. Sgt. Rancourt from overseas replacing him.

Wednesday – The COpsO – S/L Dewan – back off leave and Acting CO in the absence of W/C Snider who has gone to ADCHQ for three days. F/L Scott, SOS on transfer to Station St. Sylvestre. F/O Mawdsley TOS after course at Clinton.

Saturday and Sunday – Command Chaplain, W/C W Rodger, was on the station this week-end to conduct the Protestant services.

Thursday – W/C Snider, S/L Dewan and F/L’s Machen and Miller, went to Quebec City today for a meeting with the Auxiliary Squadron to discuss auxiliary winter training plan with W/C Taschereau, the CO of 2452 AC&W (Aux.) Squadron. F/O Lee Bushell from AFHQ arrived today on CE inspection. S/L Keele acting CO during absence of W/C Snider. F/O EL de Bourcier and F/O JG Goossens from ADCHQ arrived on the station at noon for CCM inspection.

Friday – S/L Southward and F/L Monette having completed Supply inspection departed for St. Hubert today. W/C Parks having preceded them by one day. W/C Snider back on the station.

Monday – F/L Harris, Controller, SOS on transfer to Station Edgar.

Tuesday – DM Auditors arrived on the station for three weeks.

Friday – The Corporals Club and Station Institute held a farewell party this evening for W/C Snider and made a presentation to him of an album of photographs taken at various station functions during his tour of duty.

Sunday – Battle of Britain Sunday. The parade which had been scheduled for today was cancelled by the CO due to operational commitments. However, both the Roman Catholic and Protestant church services were held in commemoration and the CO made an address on The Battle of Britain over radio MARS at 1400 hours.

Thursday – All the civilian employees on the station attended a farewell party in honour of W/C Snider this evening in the station institute.

27 Sep 58

Saturday – A formal dance was held in the Rec. Hall this evening in honour of the departing CO and his wife. W/C Snider took advantage of the occasion to present a Swimming Trophy to the station which is to be awarded each year to the station’s most outstanding swimmer. The recipient this year being F/O AT Wood.

Tuesday – The new Commanding Officer of Station Mont Apica, W/C WL Baynton, arrived on the station today, and a cocktail party in honour of the Wing Commander and his wife was held in the Officer’s Mess this evening.

Wednesday – F/O Jack Frazer was promoted to the rank of F/L today.

Friday – Handing-Over Parade was held at 1000 hours. W/C Snider handing over command of the station to W/C Baynton. Station Bagotville band was over for the occasion and the weather was fine. A Mess Dinner was held in the Officer'’ Mess that evening attended by both the incoming and outgoing CO’s and also attended by the CO of Station Parent, W/C Yarnell.

Monday – W/C Snider and his family left Mont Apica. F/L PJH Sheasby arrived from ADCHQ for four days stay in connection with checking the station profile for determination of low angle coverage.

11 Oct 58

Saturday – W/C Baynton and his family moved into their PMQ. They had previously been living at the inn at L’Etape, while waiting for the PMQ to be redecorated etc. First snow storm of the season which stranded many motorists and some civilians were accommodated on the station for the night.

Thursday – A/C Whiting together with W/C Johnson and S/L Monahan paid an unofficial visit to the station this afternoon.

17 Oct 58

Friday – A terrible tragedy occurred today when the five year old son of F/L EB Yuill was found drowned in the outdoor water reservoir. The whole station is shocked. F/O Bushell from AFHQ was in today on monthly CE inspection.

Sunday – S/L Larcombe (SOPA) arrived on the station this afternoon for a stay of two days.

20 Oct 58

Monday – The funeral service for James Ian Yuill was held today in the chapel at Station Bagotville and the boy was buried in Chicoutimi.

Saturday – Mr. Tom Hartman arrived on the station this weekend. He is the representative of the Rand Corporation of California (Research & Development Division) and will be here for five weeks introducing the STP System.

Monday – G/C Ashman, the CO Station Bagotville, W/C Braham and S/L Allison, together with other officers from Station Bagotville were on the station for the monthly Controllers meeting.

Friday – G/C and Mrs. Grant arrived this afternoon. G/C Grant being the Senior Technical Services Officer at ADCHQ. G/C Grant and Mrs. Grant were the guests of honour at an Officers Mess, Mess Dinner.

Sunday – G/C Grant and Mrs. Grant departed.

Tuesday – A Remembrance Day Parade was held this morning. The church service being followed by CO’s Inspection. A two minute silence was observed at 1100 hours.

13 – 14 Nov 58

Thursday and Friday – S/L Arsenault, Roman Catholic Chaplain, was on the station. He is assistant to W/C Gallagher, ADC RC Chaplain. The CO was at Sector for a conference, S/L Dewan being the Acting CO. W/C Baynton went flying after the conference so that S/L Dewan was acting CO from 13 – 16 Nov.

Friday – F/O WGR Johnstone, a new Controller, reported in today from Claresholm having just completed the Tyndall course.

17 Nov 58

Monday – Another new Controller reported in – F/O Furneaux who previously has been Support Officer with the Quebec Auxiliary Squadron.

Tuesday and Wednesday – Dr. Brenneman of the Rand Corporation arrived on the station the evening of 18 Nov for STP exercise. He departed immediately after the exercise was successfully completed on 19 Nov.

23 Nov 58

Sunday – The Hebertville Chamber of Commerce visited the station this afternoon and were given a briefing by the CO on the general organization and function of the unit, followed by a short tour of the townsite, and a social evening in the Officers Mess.

26 Nov 58

Wednesday – Mr. Tom Hartman (System Development Corporation) departed from the station today upon completion of the STP programme.

28 Nov 58

Friday – G/C D Gwinn and Mrs. Gwinn arrived this afternoon. G/C Gwinn officially re-opened Radio Station MARS at 2000 hours. The CO introduced G/C Gwinn over the air and he made a short speech. This event was followed by a cocktail party in the Officers Mess.

29 Nov 58

Saturday – G/C Gwinn made an informal tour of the townsite this morning and visited the tower in the afternoon.

30 Nov 58

Sunday – G/C Gwinn and Mrs. Gwinn departed.

At 1100Z NORAD on Snowman – and at 1110Z Rhino Charlie and Delta (4 CF-100s – 432 (AW) Squadron) and Jumbo Golf (2 CF-100s 413 (AW) Squadron) were committed to UL 6 7 and 8. Sector came on "Applejack". Eight MI’s occurred due to ECM. Sector on Snowman at 1205Z. Cocked Pistol at 1650Z – Lemon Juice at 1720Z. At 1804Z Jumbo 13 (413 Squadron) was scrambled against unknown UL19 – successful intercept accomplished (DC-3 – Quebec Air). On Snowman at 2152Z – "All Clear" at 2310Z.

Friday – W/C EC Snider handed over the command of Station Mont Apica to W/C WL Baynton. Jumbo Delta (2 CF-100s – 413 Squadron) was scrambled against Whopper Bravo (B-47). Results 1 MA – 1 MI (Safety).

Saturday – Whopper Bravo (Nursemaid 41 – B-47) was intercepted by 2 CF-100s from 413 Squadrons (2 MA’s) and 2 CF-100s from 425 Squadron (2 MI’s).

Monday – Whopper Bravo intercepted (2 MA’s) by 2 CF-100’s from 432 Squadron.

Tuesday – A penetration exercise was flown and 4 F-89s committed. Results – 3 MI’s and 1 MA.

Wednesday – Synthetic exercise "Desktop" was held.

Thursday – Exercise Cue Ball – 6 CF-100s were committed under Mont Apica. Rhino Delta (432 Squadron) completed successful ID run – Rhino Charlie (432 Squadron) 2 MI’s ECM – Blacksheep Peter (425 Squadron) 2 MA’s.

Friday – Whopper Bravo (Nursemaid 33 b-47) was scrambled against – but late scramble due to confusion at Sector – 5 MI’s.

Tuesday – Two Cf-100s scrambled against Whopper Bravo. Jumbo Bravo and Jumbo 9 (3 CF-100s – 413 Squadron) scrambled against unknown track – (2 MA’s – 1 MI).

Wednesday – Exercise Cue Ball was held – 2 F-89s and 6 CF-100s were scrambled.

Wednesday – At 1750Z Rhino Yankee (2 CF-100s) and Haystack 45 (1 CF-100) were committed against Nursemaid 30 (1 B-47). Results – 3 MA’s. At 1810Z "Cocked Pistol".

Thursday – At 0116Z, 6 CF-100s and 2 F-89s were committed on NC14. At 1011Z, Jumbo Papa and Jumbo Sierra committed on AD50 (3 MA’s and 1 MI). Released from Cocked Pistol at 1914Z.

Monday – Exercise Chain Shot transferred to Scooter due to maintenance.

Saturday – Exercise Common Cause was held for GObC. Great deal of local surveillance.

Sunday – Common Cause exercise again held – intercepted Actress 22 with Jumbo 20 and 26 (2 CF-100s) 413 Squadron. Results – 1 MA – 1 MI.

Monday – Exercise Chain Shot – 6 CF-100s were scrambled and all missed their intercepts.

Tuesday – Exercise Main Frame held but targets were too far west for commitment. F/O D Calnan, AS/FtrC, SOS on transfer to Lac St. Denis.

Thursday – Exercise Dawn Dance held – Broadcast Control over CBJ.

Friday – Exercise Chain Shot was held – Rhino Bravo and Delta (4 CF-100s – 432 Squadron) committed against two targets. Results – 6 MA’s, 2 MI’s.

9 Nov 58

Sunday – Five CF-100s from 432 Squadron and 5 CF-100s from 413 Squadron performed a fly past over Quebec City.

10 Nov 58

Monday – Exercise Chain Shot – 6 CF-100s were committed – ID successful but info passed too late so that ICC attack failed = 2 MA’s. 4 MI’s.

12 Nov 58

Wednesday – At 2222Z NORAD forces on Cocked Pistol. Exercise Grand Slam – 2152Z four CF-100s scrambled – result 6 MA’s and 2 MI’s.

13 Nov 58

Thursday – On the second wave of "Grand Slam" 20 CF-100s were scrambled from Bagotville. 8 MA’s and 8 MI’s were obtained.

14 Nov 58

Friday – at 1500Z Scabbard returned to normal readiness.

15 Nov 58

Saturday – The tankers of exercise "Grand Slam" returned from Goose Bay to Plattsburg – 37 of them were flight followed over an eight hour period.

Thursday – Three Cf-100s committed on Kovac 16 – a B-52 – results 3 MA’s.

Friday – Eight CF-100s were committed against Fricasie 3 – the ECM C-119 – at 10,000 feet.

Monday – RCA helicopter landed on the ball diamond. Six CF-100s scrambled on Exercise Chain Shot.

26 Nov 58

Wednesday – The last of the "Duty Controllers" – they are to become "Ops Officers".
