LAW Y Nemeth was crowned Snow Bowl Queen by the Commanding Officer, W/C WL Baynton, at the New Year’s Eve dance in the Rec. Hall. LAW Val Patterson was "runner-up" in the contest. Other contestants were AW1 J Metza, AW1 N Schroeder and LAW S Winter. Dances were held in respective Messes.

The Station was visited by members of No. 302 (City of Quebec) Wing, RCAF Association, this date arriving by bus at 1130 hours. Following lunch, the party was conducted in a tour of the Tower and the Townsite and the Recreation Centre. At 1515 hours two mixed curling teams played the visitors. The visitors departed for Quebec City after a social evening in the Mess.

The official opening of the Habitant Lounge was held at 1930 hours with the Commanding Officer cutting the ribbon. This was followed by a cocktail hour attended by all Section Heads and wives and airwomen. LAW Marge Ryan was acting PMC in the absence of LAW Lawson, PMC, and LAW Lisson, Vice PMC. The opening of the Lounge was followed by a Valentine Dance in the Recreation Hall. The Ladies Station Basketball team journeyed to RCAF Station St. Sylvestre to participate in the QRA Ladies Basketball Tournament.

Eight outside and eight local rinks competed in a Curling Bonspiel commencing tonight.

A cold, blustery day. Bonspiel continues with good coverage by Radio Station MARS and their roving reporter, LAC Les Silver. A banquet for participating curlers was held in the Mess at 2000 hours with curling continuing until after midnight.

Curling Bonspiel ended with the rink from Arvida winning the Labatts Curling Trophy. WO1 Baird’s rink was second and Riverbend third.

The Winter Carnival opened this evening with a torchlight parade by the Ski Patrol from the Ski Chalet to the Recreation Hall. Outdoor square dancing in the parking area of the Rec. Hall was followed by square dancing in the Rec. Hall. W/C Baynton proclaimed LAW Shirley Lisson Carnival Queen with Law’s Metza, Rynn and Patterson as attending Princesses.

Competition has been keen between the Messes in the competitive sports with the Airmen’s Mess leading the race for the Carnival Cup. A/C and Mrs. Bradshaw arrived 11 March to attend the final functions of the Carnival. Representatives from Roberval radio station and newspapermen of the area are covering Carnival events. At 1900 hours, 11 March, a fireworks display from the CO’s hill was followed by the A/C and Mrs. Bradshaw visiting the various Messes. The ice sculpture display of the Sgt’s. Mess was awarded first place in the ice sculpture contest.

This morning the finals of the children’s ski meet were held. A/C Bradshaw presented the winners with their medals amid a group of interested spectators. The adult ski meet was run off in the afternoon, terminating in a flying saucer race by the PMCs of the representative Messes down the ski hill and a toboggan race from the CO’s hill to the Rec. Hall. The Rec. Hall, gaily decorated in snowmen and streamers, was the scene of the Formal Dance with music provided by the Royal 22nd Regiment Band from Quebec City. A/C Bradshaw presented the winner’s trophy to LAC D Lye, representative of the Airmen’s Mess. FS Chase accepted the trophy for the Combined Team and F/L Yuill was presented with the Morrow Curling Trophy for the Officers Mess.

The day dawned sunny and bright. All available airmen proceeded to the Tower to carry out emergency repairs to the Tower roof to prevent further damage caused by water leaking through to the ADCOM II room. Only essential services were carried on in the Tower while the emergency repairs were being carried out. A hot application of roofing compound was spread directly over the concrete decking, over which was laid cork insulation two inches thick. Next followed two to three layers of felt, which were covered with a layer of roofing tar approximately one quarter of an inch thick. The whole roof then received a final application of gravel. Work continued until darkness set in and was completed on the 28 April.

Cadets from the Royal Military College, St. Jean, Quebec, arrived by bus at 1130 hours and were met by the CO, CTSO, SGTO and CAdO. The group was given a briefing by the CO in the Officers Mess prior to lunch. Following the luncheon, the cadets were taken on a tour of the Operations building where they witnessed a synthetic intercept. After a tour of the Townsite, the group departed for St. Jean.

General Silvio Napoli, Chief of the Air Staff, Italian Air Force, accompanied by Madame Napoli, General Mario Bucchi, Italian Air Force, Commander Also S Massasini, Naval Military Attaché, Mrs. Massarini, Captain Riccardo Musci, Aide de Camp, and S/L GA McInnis, Conducting Officer from AFHQ, arrived via staff cars from Bagotville. The party arrived at 1100 hours and was conducted to the Officers Mess where they were greeted by the Commanding Officer, W/C WL Baynton and Mrs. Baynton, S/L and Mrs. RC Keele, and S/L Graham Inglis. Following coffee, Madame Napoli and Mrs. Massasini, accompanied by Mrs. Baynton and Mrs. Keele, toured the Townsite, stopping at the Station Hospital where the visitors were introduced to Mrs. McGirr and her three day old daughter by the SMO, F/L AC McKinley. The remainder of the General’s group proceeded to the Operations building where they were given a briefing by the COpsO, S/L G Inglis and a tour of the Operations building. At 1230 hours, the luncheon in the Officers Mess was attended by General Napoli and his party, CO, CTSO, COpsO, CAdO, SGTO and respective wives. His Excellency Monsignor Maurice Roy, Archbishop of Quebec, Primate of the Catholic Church in Canada, and Bishop Ordinary of the Military Vicariate, accompanied by Monsignor Nicole, Secretary to his Excellency, and W/C Gallagher, Command Chaplain (RC) arrived at Mont Apica at 1700 hours. They were met by the Acting Commanding Officer, S/L RC Keele, and proceeded to the Officers Mess to meet the Section Heads and the RC officers. A religious ceremony took place in the RC Chapel at 1900 hours and was attended by the parents of the 23 children being Confirmed. The visit was terminated with an informal gathering at the Recreational Centre and personnel present were given the opportunity of meeting Monsignor Roy personally.
