LAC LG McAndrew was selected as Airman of the Month for June, 1962.
The unit Sports Banquet was held with winners of team or individual sports being presented with trophies or crests. A dance was held following the Banquet. Attendance was very good.

2 Jun 62

A station golf tournament was held for all personnel. Participation was good.

7 Jun 62

Mr. Leclair from Betteridge & Smith arrived this date and commenced repair to Operations Building roof. Repair consisted of removal of outer ring flashing and replacing with TS5 mesh.

7 - 8 Jun 62

Mr. PJ Blaydon of CAE visited to monitor supply and construction progress at GATR site.

9 Jun 62

Mr. Levescque of the Department of Health arrived on the unit to sample lake water to assist in determining water treatment required.

11 Jun 62

Work commenced on SAGE Annex (Stage III) projects.

12 Jun 62

Cold Wind 37 liver exercise was held with Cocked Pistol at approximately 0900 local. The exercise terminated at 1330 hours local.

12 - 14 Jun 62

F/L SA Dukes and F/L RK Widdis AMCHQ/SCEO visited for the purpose of siting TRN017 TACAN Siting.

Operations held a simulated exercise NNR STM 603.

F/L FL Conn, Pers/AFSec., Staff Security Officer CHQ arrived for security inspection.

W/C W Rodger, ADCHQ Chaplain/Protestant visited the unit.

F/L Joy of ADC SOPC visited regarding personnel.

F/L SJG Telford and F/L EW Fox, ADC SOPC/APC arrived at Station Parent for staff visit.

21 Jun 62

F/L IM Vaughan, SStandsO and F/O C Langlais EWO, attended a SAC briefing at Lac St. Denis. Lt. Colonel Beale, NNR Liaison Officer and Major Hank NNR, were the briefing officers. They presented a series of slides on the operations of SAC then ended the briefing with a discussion on SRIBS.
The schools held a children’s Track and Field meet. The results were forwarded to ADC for inclusion in its annual competition. It was considered a success in that the majority of the school children participated. (Photo attached as Annex 3 to Appendix "A").

F/O RL Pope arrived from Mont Apica on 2 weeks TD to control CF-100s out of Bagotville.

27 Jun 62

Mr. Barnes and Mr. Blondin of Northern Electric visited re Telco.
A Rod and Gun Club was set up. Attendance was good.

28 - 29 Jun 62

Live exercise Shock Wave V was held. The siren sounded at 0630 hours local. The first wave came through at approximately 1030 local, terminating approximately 1400 local. The unit remained on Big Noise D until approximately midnight. The second wave was a Big Blast mission which started at approximately 0130 hours local 29 Jun and terminated approximately 0400 hours local.

The playground program began with registration and introduction of a new playground supervisor.

30 Jun 62

Participation in sports on the unit was very high this month with swimming in both the pool and the lake reaching 750 man-hours, softball men’s and ladies 778 man-hours, Golf 80 man-hours, water skiing 65 man-hours, tennis 30 man-hours. Other activities which were constant were fishing, boating and pleasure cruising.

LAC LM Unwin was selected as Airman of the Month for the month of July, 1962.

Seven baby boys were born during the month of July.

2 - 7 Jul 62

A Water Safety Week was held on these days. On Thursday 5 Jul a show was held on the beach with tips on precautions to take for boating, swimming and rescuing. Very good show.

3 Jul 62

Live exercise Cold Wind 38 was held with Cocked Pistol at 0745 hours local. The first wave appeared at approximately 1030 hours local and terminated at 1300 hours local.

3 - 5 Jul 62

A Stage production called "Afterthought" was held in the Station Theatre on these nights by station personnel. The attendance increased each night and it was considered a relatively successful show.

STM 657 and Double Time Bravo were run. Film started at 1300 hours local and terminated at 1500 hours local.

Mr. PJ Blaydon on a visit re inventory of GATR equipment.

9 Jul 62

Mrs. Leberge from Parent (civilian) delivered twin boys at the Station Hospital. The infirmary work load has practically doubled due to Dr. Pelletier leaving Parent. We now care for all civilians in this area.
Mr. C Cote, DND/IS Montreal, visited re GATR site equipment.

10 Jul 62

Mr. Keenan and son of La Tuque Telephone Company visited to discuss the Telco building and SAGE cabling.
The controllers, Operations Section, wrote the semi-annual proficiency exam.

11 Jul 62

Twenty members of the 1st Parent Cub Pack (RCAF) visited the tower and toured the various sections.

12 Jul 62

Shock Wave 6 was held, with the siren sounding at 1710 local. The exercise was originally scheduled to have 3 waves fly through, but the Big Blast portion was cancelled. The first wave was IP at 2020 hours local and terminated at 2300 hours. The last wave started at 0420 hours 13 Jul and terminated at 0600 hours. MNS was evaluated on this exercise.

16 Jul 62

New Austerity Program in effect. Primary 82 decreased by $5,000.00 and four A for Ps totaling $9,650.00 have been cancelled.

19 Jul 62

F/L JR Cairncross, Sgt. Fletcher, Cpl. Poutts and LAC Beattie Nuclear Defence Team, North Bay, visited station to give Nuclear Defence lectures.

STM 401 was held this day with film start at 1200 local. This was a particularly heavy problem.

31 Jul 62

Live exercise Cold Wind 39 was held this morning. The first a/c was IP at 0920 hours local and the exercise terminated at 1230 local. Weather was a problem on this exercise.

Opening day of the Summer Carnival for the children. The band paraded through PMQ area with children on decorated bikes and wagons following. Due to inclement weather part of the Field Day being held for the children was postponed until 4 Aug.
27546 LAC JA Garneau MSEOp 3A was selected to represent Station Parent at the annual Safe Driving Competition to be held at Station Rockcliffe on 29 Sept to 4 Oct 62.

All primary 82 work cancelled. Projects included are:
282-2-2 Armco Drainage System
282-2-2 Garbage Stands PMQs
282-2-3 Fire Fighting Training Area
282-2-3 Fire Alarm Warning Device
This was the official Summer Carnival opening day and all the floats led by the Station Trumpet Band and majorettes paraded throughout the Station’s streets. Competition was held between the personnel of the unit and the civilians from the town of Parent in such activities as canoe jousting, boat races, long distance swimming and softball games. The day terminated with a Monte Carlo night and dance. An auction was also held at this dance. The whole day was considered a huge success. (Photos attached as Annex 1 to Appendix "A").

3 Aug 62

This was the final day of the Summer Carnival and competition ensured with Track and Field, Tog-O-War, and softball games. To end the carnival a semi-formal dress dance was held and it was here that the final choosing of the queen was made along with picking the winning ticket for the $50.00 cash prize. The carnival as a whole was considered one of the best ever staged at Station Parent. Much time was spent in decorating of the floats and the Rec. Hall, publicity and advertising. The inclusion of the people of Parent in the festivities and competition furthered public relations between the Station and the town of Parent. (Photos attached as Annex 1 to Appendix "A").

Mr. Kelly of Northeastern Development Limited visited re GATR pole siting.

W/C WC Kent assumed command of RCAF Station Parent from W/C SC Tugwell. (Photos attached as Annex 2 to Appendix "A").

7 - 12 Jul 62

The RCAF Male and Female Swim Marathon was held on these days with 46 males and 26 females taking part. The swimming pool was opened on average of 16 hours per day and though the maximum number of personnel did not participate it was considered a very worthwhile effort. A dramatic finish occurred when two male swimmers very close in total mileage decided to battle it out in the closing minutes of the meet which served as a grand finale for the competition.

Live Exercise Apache Jewel was held with the siren sounding at 1815 local. The first wave was IP at 2120 local. The second wave was a Big Blast mission with the first IP at 0215. Fade out came at 0300.

Mr. Lishka of Canadian Aviation Electronics arrived for GATR installation.

15 Aug 62

Mr. WM Stahlberger visited on an inspection of GATR installation.
F/O S Zoimer, AMCHQ SCEO visited Parent re GATR installation progress.
Mr. GL Bell, Mr. RA Long and Mr. G Thompson from Northern Electric Company visited to install a radar modification project A4,

STM 663 was held this morning for 1 ½ hours.

20 Aug 62

Mr. Emeigh of Burroughs Company visited re SAGE air conditioning.

21 Aug 62

Mr. LaRose and Mr. Desserault of La Tuque Telephone Company arrived to man Telco installation.
STM Desk Top 5 was held this day with film start at 1200 local. Exercise lasted 3 hours.

22 Aug 62

Mr. WH White, DND/IS, remaining several weeks on an inspection of the GATR contract.
Mr. Wickert and Mr. Green of Western Electric visited re GATR, Telco and SAGE installations.

25 Aug 62

A group of 19 Airwomen, 2 female Officers and 2 Male Officers embarked on a weekend camping trip to Descelles Lake organized by Captain Roy, DentO. Activities consisted of fishing, boating, water skiing, softball and sun bathing.
F/L LM Vaughan, SStandsO, attended a 2 day Surveillance Officers Conference at St. Hubert.

28 Aug 62

Cold Wind 40 live exercise was held this date.

S/L HB Hebb, ADCHQ Staff Officer, conducted a Telecom Command visit.

2 Sep 62

Sky Shield 3 was held this day. The siren was sounded at approximately 100 hours local. The first IP came at 1614 hours. The load was not heavy and it was a comparatively easy exercise. Stringent safety measures curtailed intercept activity considerably. Fade out came at 2100 local.

A Compulsory swimming program commenced this day for all non-swimmers on the unit.

10 Sep 62

S/L Harvey attended a 2 day COpsO Conference with the SCESO Branch at St. Hubert.

11 Sep 62

Mr. Van Riemsdyk of CAE(W) the engineer in charge of VanCal #6 arrived with the test equipment calibration Van and four technicians to calibrate this Units test equipment. The team departed on 27 Sep.

Station Parent became integrated into Ottawa NORAD Sector at 0001 hours.

19 Sep 62

STM 660 run this morning. This was the first STM conducted after integrating with ONS.
F/L DO Bly and F/O DN Ward both Pers/AFSec, CHQ and FS R Chatburn AFPlan arrived by train from Senneterre to conduct Security Force Training.

25 Sep 62

A re-run of Desk Top 5 was conducted with film start at 1200 local. The Station Parent EDP was also exercised.
Mr. Green of Western Electric Company visited for 2 days regarding SAGE.

30 Sep 62

This month was spent primarily in the setting up and scheduling of the winter activities. The softball season ended with the Headquarters team defeating the Civilians in a best of 3 games series and emerging Intersection Softball Champs. The gymnasium saw much use as badminton and basketball enthusiasts came out to prepare for the winter season.

F/L R Wybou assumed position of Operations Officer.
Mr. Morley of GSMO (Ottawa), Mr. Roberson of AMC, Mr. Brown of DDP and Mr. Guinn of CAE arrived for handing over of GATR equipment.

S/L Clair of ADCHQ arrived for handing over of GATR equipment.

STM 664 was conducted this morning.

4 Oct 62

GATR Contractor and acceptance personnel departed.
Big Blast Kilo was held with the siren sounding at 2150 local. The first IP was at 0100. Forecasted fog at various bases caused a large number of fakers to cancel. As a result the traffic load for the exercise was very light. Fade-out came at 0345 hours local.

Mr. Burr, Mr. Maki and Mr. Nash of Northern Electric (Belleville) arrived for overhaul of radar ancillary equipment.

10 Oct 62

Mr. Hogg and Mr. Green of Western Electric (North Bay) visited re SAGE testing.
Square Dancing sessions were held in the Rec. Hall with an attendance of 16 people. It is anticipated that participation will increase.

12 Oct 62

STM 605 held this day with Junior Battle Staff.
The Fire Prevention displays were judged in the Rec. Hall with the submissions coming from School Children.

Mr. Milenkovich of Burroughs visited re SAGE computer.

23 Oct 62

The Command Security Team under F/L Winchester pulled a surprise alert during the early morning. The siren sounded at 0140 local. The Station EDP was implemented with only service personnel participating. A simulated NUDET was passed and the tower fall-out plan was carried out. The exercise ended at 0430 hours local.

24 Oct 62

Mr. Wickert of Western Electric (North Bay) visited re SAGE installations.
STM 666 was conducted this morning with Senior Battle Staff.
Station Parent went on DEFCON 3 C at 1723Z as a result of the Cuban situation. External security precautions were maintained.

28 Oct 62

The sudden death semi-final game of the Flag football League was played between second place Headquarters and third place ComRads. ComRads won 10-3 and go on to meet the Ops team for a sudden death final game in November. This league was considered successful and lacked spectators only.

Rec. Centre activities for October was approximately:

Telecom and CE Sections did first major repair of FPS-508 antenna entirely within own resources. An oil seal was replaced in the antenna pedestal. This took approximately 26 hours. WO2 Churcott of ADCHQ/SOCE visited as a Command observer.

ADC reduced to DEFCON 3 B at 1632Z.

Catseye 6 was cancelled.

7 Nov 62

Fire in Right Tower third floor Room 305, caused by overheating of chromolox heater.

13 Nov 62

Mr. Watson and Mr. Mikks arrived on the 13th and Mr. Bergeron arrived on the 17th to assist in overhaul of diesel units. Mr. Mikks, Mr. Watson and Mr. Bergeron are representatives of Consolidated Engines.

13 - 16 Nov 62

Mr. Ed Green of WE/ADES North Bay visited to discuss the SAGE implementation program.

STM’s 664, 665 and 666 were run concurrently from 0900 hours to 1600 hours local. The first two films were quite heavy and presented good Surveillance problem.

STM 402 - 3 hour problem with heavy traffic was run.

A serviceman’s guided tour of the Operations building was held from 1400 hours to 1630 hours. 8 Airmen from "down the hill" attended.
Mrs. Hollywood, La Tuque Telephone Company’s Chief Operator from La Tuque, and Mrs. Bourcier, La Tuque Telephone Company’s Chief Operator from Parent visited out PBX to promote good relations.

26 Nov 62

The unit IND’s reverted to the flight system once again.
Telecom and CE Sections did the second major repair of the FPS-508 antenna within its own resources. The housing complete with bull-gear and bearings was replaced. This took approximately 19 hours.

27 Nov 62

ADC returned to DEFCON 5 "A" at 2355Z.

29 Nov 62

Apache Leader (live) was held this day. First IP was at 1200 hours local. The exercise ended at 1500 hours local. Traffic was heavier than usual and was considered a good surveillance problem.
