HISTORICAL REPORT
1970

January

A Course Training Standard Team visited the Ops Site (Ground Training Section) 14-15 Jan for familiarization and discussion re major equipments and Tech Pubs, etc. CFS Ramore participated in Exercise Fabric Brave 70-1 at Live ECM Level I/IV. A briefing team from Command visited the unit to present briefing on the proposed construction of the Hall of Canadian Aviation/RCAF Memorial at CFB Trenton. Two briefings were held at the Social Centre. An Electronic Measure Demo Flight was held 12 Jan.

February

Captain DC Ellison, Station Exchange Officer, attended an Exchange Workshop in Uplands. The major event of the month of Feb was the official opening of the new, enlarged Station Exchange by Colonel Arnott on 28 Feb. This event coincided with the week-long Winter Carnival activities, CFS Ramore’s third Winter Carnival. The unit assisted in Exercise Snow White II, of #2 D Coy Algonquin Regiment, on 20-22 Feb, providing facilities, with the SLogO, Captain Seale, acting as Liaison Officer. This station participated in the following exercises at levels indicated: 10-11 Feb: Exercise Snowtime 70-4-C Live ECM; Exercise Fabric Brave 70-2 Level I/IV; 23-27 Feb Exercise Fair Play 70 Part I, Scripted Inputs. ECM Demo Flight occurred 23 Feb. A tour of the Operations Site was made by a group of students from the Porcupine Campus of Northern Institute of Technology.

36 Mobile Homes were allotted to CFS Ramore and the site chosen was the Cummings property in Matheson, 12 miles distant from the station. Appropriate publicity was given simultaneously to all news media in the area re this DND project. Exercise Amalgam Mute 70-2-E was participated in by CFS Ramore at Live ECM Level I/IV. The CHQ Supply Pride Analysis Team inspected the Supply Operation during the period 9-10 Mar 70. #3 RCEO visited the unit 31 Mar. 32 Air Cadets and one officer from 228 RC (Air) C Squadron Kirkland Lake toured the Ops Site. Lt. MC Parker, ADCHQ Security Monitor, was present for a unit vulnerability test carried out on 5 Mar. A Search and Rescue Exercise at McVittie Lake provided training under winter conditions for 14 personnel. A Defensive Driving Course was conducted by the Transport Section and resulted in 39 personnel receiving DDC certificates.

April

A Command CE Admin Inspection was carried out by Captain Day and a RMM Inspection by CWO Cote on 27, 28, 29 Apr. The Accounts Section was visited by Lt. Col. Hea and Captain Van Wart from ADCHQ 29-30 Apr, and a staff visit and inoculation parade was conducted by Major Hodgkinson, Base Medical Officer, CFB North Bay for Regional Surgeon. Seven personnel received Trade Advancement training 31 Mar - 13 Apr. Eight personnel received training as projectionists on a Bell and Howell course on the station. The station participated in Exercise Fair Play 70 Part II with scripted inputs. 30 High School students, members of the Porcupine Hi-C Club toured the station. The facilities of the Northern College Auditorium were made available for the cast of the Canadair Variety show on 4 Apr 70. The show was a success and there was very good attendance by service and civilian personnel. Command Chaplains Colonel Madill and Perusse (Protestant and RC) made a liaison visit to the station.

May

Colonel WM Diggle, CD, CHQ, carried out a Commander’s Inspection of the station on 11 May. The inspection was a complete success. This month marked the beginning of a high level of fire training on the station for all personnel, continuing on during the summer months. 24 were trained during the month of May. Eight personnel were trained Phase I in Guard Training, and seven in Phase 2. Commodore Stephens, Director General of Maintenance, and Colonel F Colosimone, Director of Electronic and Communications Maintenance, CFHG, visited the station 5 May for familiarization with a typical ADC radar site. Major GH Lowes, Public Relations, visited the unit 6 May. Civilian and Domestic Site service personnel who had never had the opportunity to tour the Operations Site, were given conducted tours by the NCOs i/c. A postal Liaison and staff visit was made by the Command Postal Officer, Captain RGW Butler. During the period 19-20 May, a SSOPS team from Command visited the station to report on Food Services, Personnel Administration Services, Messes and Exchange System and Physical Education and Recreation.

June

To celebrate Armed Forces Day, a briefing and tour of the station, followed by a reception, was presented to the news media of the surrounding area on 13 Jun. A SSOTN/ML visit was made to the station by staff members, Major Thompson, MWO Bull and WO Simpson. The Station participated in Exercise Fabric Brave 70-4 at Live ECM Level I/IV. Four personnel were trained Phase I in Guard Training. An A for P for a Ski Hill project, near the Operations Site, was submitted to CFHQ on 30 Jun. Work parties of volunteers will do the preliminary work during the summer months.

July

Captain MacPherson, ADCHQ, as well as CFHQ personnel and CGE project engineers attended final phase of Project Carnival conducted during the early part of Jul at this station. Photox support was provided by a Mobile Photo Team from North Bay. From 18-24 Jul, the station participated in Exercise Fair Play Part III - scripted inputs. 12 additional personnel were fire fighter trained. Eight students were hired under the Federal Student Summer Employment program for the summer months. Lt. IM Battaglia, SLogO, replaced Captain DCJ Seale, who was transferred to Ottawa. Branch Head, Captain W McDavid, replaced Major AA Bialosh as CGEO. In the CGEO branch, Lt. B Gauthier was TOS'’ as TelOpsO. Captain CE Rule, new SCEO replaced Captain AG Dempsey. Sgt. RG Jackson was TOS’d as new NCO i/c MP.

August

A two day Defensive Driving Course was conducted on the station by the Transport Section. This course was mandatory for all holders of licenses DND 404s and was well attended by other service and civilian personnel - a total of 42 trained. A total of 41 personnel were trained in First Aid. Sessions in First Aid training were provided by the instructor over the following months. The Search and Rescue team carried out an exercise for seven personnel at Sanborne Lake for a three day period. Training was given in shelter building, map reading and navigation. 15 personnel were re-certified in Guard Training; 13 trained in fire fighting; five trained in fire fighting and G11 (fire truck). From 18-24 Jul, CFS Ramore participated in Exercise Snowtime 71-1-E (Fabric Chief 71-1), Live ECM Level I/IV. CWO Gustasfon #3 RCEO visited the Power Plant to check on #5 Mains and other equipment. French and English language testing was conducted on the station for civilian personnel. Two attempted the French testing, and approximately eight to ten, the English.

September

An Educational Equivalency programme testing was offered to civilian personnel on the station and at least two personnel took advantage of this offer. A 702 Comm Squadron line crew from Petawawa replaced communications poles. CFS Ramore participated in Exercise Snowtime 71-2-E, Live ECM. Guard training was continued to bring the guard up to its full compliment; fire fighting and first aid training were also continued. A DM Audit and Inspection was conducted 8 Sep, which reflected a satisfactory standard. A Vulnerability Test was carried out on 24 Sep, commencing at 1300Z and ending at 0400Z. The unit was visited by Command Hygiene Assistant, ADCHQ, Sgt. J Waddleton.

October

Installation of the new fire alarm system was completed. This was a project started early in the year and during the summer months, electrical engineers from a contracting firm in Toronto began installation. A planned EDP exercise was conducted on the unit 23 Oct and a no notice exercise on 26 Oct. The unit participated in Exercise Fabric Brave 71-1, Live ECM Level i/IV/V and Exercise Fair Play 71 Part I - scripted inputs. The unit was called upon for assistance from local authorities in search for a missing woman who was found unharmed. The Search and Rescue team also trained eight personnel in search and rescue tactics for three days at a near-by lake. CWO Prince and MWO McLeod, Career Managers, CFHQ, visited the unit to instruct CE personnel on CE career policies.

November

On 3 Nov 70, a Labour-Management Consultation Committee was formed, with three representatives from Labour, and three from Management. Monthly meetings were scheduled to be held the first Tuesday of each month and a new relationship was established between Labour and Management through this joint committee. A Command Inspection of station and medical facilities was conducted by Command Surgeon, Commander Kierstead, and Command Matron, ATC, Major H Ott. At Level I/IV Command Post, CFS Ramore participated in Exercise Fabric Hunt 71-1. The CD/AIMS project was completed - a shielded room and Condensing Unit installed. Once again, the SAR team was called upon to search for a missing woman who was found unharmed. A Ground Training Staff Visit was conducted by Captain Potter, Command, 9-13 Nov. During November, an application was submitted to CFHQ for approval in principal for CFCF assistance for the Junior Ranks Mess renovation program.

December

CFS Ramore participated in Exercise Snowtime 71-3-C ( Fabric Brave 71-2) Live ECM Level I/IV. 18 units of the Mobile Homes were made available for occupancy. The Ski Hill project was 95% complete with the exception of the tow. The number of Trailer Pads on the station was reduced to 11 and the removal of the concrete pads and necessary re-sodding was to be done in the spring. A year book on fire prevention activities carried out at CFS Ramore for the year 1970 was presented in booklet form to all members of the Station Safety Council and Fire Prevention Committee.
