CFS Val d’Or personnel provided lectures and a test exercise to CFS Ramore in the nuclear defence cell. Implementation of the directive that the CF green uniform is the only uniform to be worn was commenced on the station, and personnel were informed of the required standard to which they must adhere when wearing the green uniform. From Jan/Dec 72, the CE Section reported 387 ½ man hours in volunteer fire fighting for 20 men.

The official opening and torchlight ceremony opened the station’s fifth Winter Carnival on 23 Feb 72 and ended with the Wind-Up Party on 26 Feb 72 at the Ponderosa. Each year sees notable improvements in the carnival events and the facilities which the Ponderosa has to offer. It is the only major even of the winter season, participated in by all personnel as well as most associate members of the messes.
March
A 40 passenger bus 71-17925 was allocated to the station. A Command Comptroller Inspection was conducted in the Accounts Section during the month of Mar. Colonel JE Neelin, Deputy Chief of Staff Technical Services, ADCHQ, conducted a Commander’s Inspection of the unit 7-8 Mar 72. Local dignitaries and officiating clergymen were present as official guests. Ground Environment Section reported:

The Station Development Committee, as an integral part of Station Fund, has a number of projects to be undertaken within the next five to ten years and these are to be listed in order of their priorities. The first on this list is the improvement of the Ponderosa.
CFS Val d’Or gave formal lectures on NBC response and reporting. This was coincident with stepped-up defence training and the re-writing of the station’s EDP.

A 16 passenger bus, 72-18394, was allotted to the station. An A for P was submitted for extension and renovations to the Ponderosa and WO Renaud was named as Project Officer for this long term project, with work to commence immediately on approval during the summer and fall months. Work on a proposed camping and parking area for the Ponderosa was commenced which will allow facilities and convenience for campers. CFS Ramore successfully passed Vulnerability Test #1 for the year 1972 during the month of June. The following vehicles were allotted to the unit during the month of Jun: 72-18459 - Station Wagon; 72-18460 - Station Wagon; 72-18472 Truck Carry All 4x4 (GATR); 72-18621 Water Truck - 2500 gallon; 60-66323 Trailer Water 250 gallon. Four summer students were employed under the Student Summer Employment Work Program. A successful Armed Forces Day was held on the station, 10 Jun 72, and was participated in by CF101s, CF100s and T33s. In addition, the Iroquois Falls High School Band performed and the 972 Squadron, RC (Air) Cadets, Iroquois Falls, carried out a drill for the large crowd in attendance. A team from CFS Ramore received training by running a VT Test against CFS Lowther. A new Fire Alarm Alerting device was installed which allows for two separate alerting systems, as required by ADCO’s.
July
Effective in Jul, Lt. RA Faulkner replaced Captain EH Rule as SCEO. Captain MF Bruneau assumed the position of TelOpsO. CFS Ramore supported the Kirkland Lake Canada Day celebrations on 1 Jul at Culver Park, Swastika, and was also able to assist in the arranging of a fly-past from CFB Bagotville. The new Aerobics program was implemented on the station and personnel commenced training with all testing to be completed prior to 30 Sep 72. All personnel were encouraged and directed to participate in this new programme to promote high physical fitness standards on the station. CFS Ramore personnel assisted with labour and expertise in a community project in the town of Matheson where the mobile trailer homes are located - the construction of an indoor artificial skating rink. One new Wajax forest pump was added to the fire hall equipment. The Ground Environment Section reported the following:

The Basic French Language program was instituted on the station in Sep 72, with 18 military and two civilian students commencing on a once weekly basis, one morning a week for a five day week. A Deputy Minister’s Audit and Inspection was carried out at the station on 29 Sep 72. Mr. KA McLeod, Director General Engineering Construction, NDHQ, officially visited the unit 12-13 Sep 72 to review construction engineering requirements and related activities. Major-General NL Magnusson, Commander Air Defence Command, officially visited the station 21-22 Sep 72. During his tour of the station, he met informally with news media at luncheon, and specially invited guests at the dining-in.
October
During the period 10-13 Oct, #1 Field Squadron from CFB Petawawa carried out blasting and rock removal of a large outcropping to allow for construction of the CFS Ramore ski hill. 13 Dent Unit CFB Trenton visited the station to discuss dental matters and inspection of dental facilities. LCol CJ Knight, Command Surgeon, ADC, Colonel Wynne, Command Surgeon, ADC and Major Wiley, ADC, made a staff medical visit on 10 Oct 72. Ground Environment Section reported the following:

Cpl. RG McLay, RM Tech, CE Section, won a Suggestion Award for his submission on a check valve located in FPS-27 Radar waveguide pressurizer. The CE Section extended barrels of hydrants in the PMQ Trailer Park Matheson so that the hydrant ports would be a proper height from the ground level. Major improvements to the Ponderosa were completed which included an extension for an enlarged area for seating and dance floor area; removal of the bar and its relocation in a more convenient area; a wooden floor in the dance space, and a walk-in refrigerator added to the bar. The enlarged and improved Ponderosa now allows for a facility to be used by military and civilian alike, for any large station function. Cpl. JR Blais, Station Orderly Room, was chosen for the Outstanding Enlisted Servicemen’s Recreation Program and visited Colorado Springs. A CR position for the CPO’s office, to assist the CPO, was approved.

CFS Ramore’s Fire Fighting Force made an outstanding contribution to the station by contributing another Fire-Free year and submitted a very commendable entry in the Fire Prevention Contest. Assistance was provided to local communities on off-station fires in Ramore and Holtyre and a high standard of fire fighting training was maintained. RECREATION
Emphasis was laid throughout the year on the Aerobics Program and Physical Fitness. As well as through the regular training program provided, this station, under its PERI staff of MCpl. WJ King and Cpl. J Beauchene (as of 30 Jun 72) participated in an excellent recreation program.
Teams were entered in the local Industrial League softball series and the Small Base Championships. The Iroquois Falls Golf Club provided golfing for its enthusiasts.
CFS Ramore placed first in the Matheson- Black River Fire Fighters Competition in Broomball. The station won the Ken Edgar Memorial Trophy in the Industrial League in hockey and came first in the local broomball league, winning another trophy.
Curling teams were entered in local curling for the season at the Ross Mine Curling Club, Holtyre.
The Mixed Bowling League was very popular and provided keen competition throughout the season.
Indoor games – basketball, volleyball, badminton – were held at the school gym in Matheson.
PUBLIC RELATIONS
CFS Ramore experiences an unusually fine year of rapport with the news media. Sgt. AF Maher, SOR, as the Unit Information Officer, arranged excellent coverage of all news events on the station. The news media were invited to the station for all important occasions to which they could be invited and CFS Ramore was well publicized in press, radio and TV. All inspections by the Commanding Officer and Cadet Liaison Officers of local cadet squadrons were given ample news coverage.
Conducted tours of the Ops Site for school groups, cadets, etc., were given throughout the year.
Local mayors, reeves and dignitaries were included in many station events and good relationship maintained with them as well as the residents of the surrounding communities. The service personnel, on their part, actively participated in the local affairs of the communities in which they lived.
