The Officer’s and NCO’s Messes held Lobster parties this date. The Lobsters were flown in from Chatham, NB, by CF-100. Van Cal Team set up a tower. Two CTG obtained group 3, one failed group 3, and one failed group 2 from results of TE written in April.

Sgt. HLC Pratt, Sup Tech, died in his sleep while on annual leave in Vancouver, BC, prior to reporting to Station Holberg on transfer.

Trade Board results arrived this date – 50 passes out of 68.

WO2 Delong, FS Montgomery, FS Stevens, FS Cordick, FS Iverson and Sgt. Billo attended Sgt. Pratt’s funeral in Ottawa as Honorary Pall Bearers.

F/L Archibald CTSO received CD on CO’s Parade today. F/O Rogers arrived from North Bay to replace F/L Shufelt on leave.

A Monte Carlo Dance was held in the Recreation Centre.

ASWelO visits this Unit the 20^th and 21^st of June 61. F/L WP Phillips, SOPA, visits unit 20-21 June. Mess Dinner for Airwomen – 10^th anniversary. Four memberships for the Val d’Or Golf Course were acquired for use of Senneterre and Val d’Or Detachment personnel.

Air Force Day. Golden Hawks put on an Air Show at Val d’Or Detachment. Very successful. All AFP personnel on duty at Val d’Or Detachment directing traffic on Air Force Day. There was approximately 1,000 cars and about 5,000 people attending.

Mr. Trsichuk and Lieutenant Colonel Desbose from AFHQ inspected GATR Site and SAGE Annex.

Statutory Holiday – St. John’s the Baptist Day. FS ML Pare and Sgt. LQ Aulis reported in on duty at the Tower from TSE Detachment Clinton.

G/C Powell SOMS visited Val d’Or Detachment for inspection purposes.

F/O Suttie and F/O Wooding were promoted to F/L rank this date. Promotion party held in Officers Mess. Fuel handling and supply were reactivated at Val d’Or Detachment.

F/L PC Walker, Air/P, transferred to Station Holberg. F/O Jergensen Air/Obs transferred to Station Parent. Dr. Taguchi employed while SMO on leave during the period of 1 – 19 July inclusive. A three team soccer league was formed on the unit. SIF became fully operational after in plant modification of Decoder units by Northern Electric.

W/C CC Underhill proceeded on leave this date. S/L ND Cairns Unit COpsO, acting CO for period of CO’s absence. Red Cross Blood Donor Clinic – RCAF and DND personnel donated.

All CE & RCAF personnel on days off went out sodding around the ME, CE & Supply Sections. Acting CO S/L Cairns and CAdO F/L MR MacGregor included.

Everybody free is sodding again today around the station. Big thunder and lightening storm – the worse seen as yet in this part of the country. Rain was pouring and the storm lasted from 1945 hours to 2100 hours.

S/L ND Cairns proceeded on TD to North Bay for the 15 – 16 returning today.

Dr. J Patton visited this unit for a two day period to STD discussions.

F/L Legare from Ottawa Sector visited Ops Bldg this date, the 20^th and 21^st of July inclusive.

W/C CC Underhill returned from annual leave today.

F/L MR MacGregor proceeded for his quarterly flying practice for the week of July 31 – Aug 4 61. Civilian exams for typist only.

At 0230 hours a car accident took place on the road from Senneterre to the Station, in which LAW Seifried lost her life and LAC Prout was severely injured. The body of Miss Seifried was accompanied to her home in Innisfail, Alberta by FS Malish. AFP investigated the accident which occurred at curve on Radar and Pumphouse road.

S/L ND Cairns proceeded on annual leave starting today. Red Cross Examiner arrived on Unit and qualified 53 swimmers at their respective levels.

Civic Holiday.

Air Commodore Greenway, CE Pers, from AFHQ, S/L Nickel, PDM, arrived on a visit and inspection.

FS Cordick, Clerk Admin, is transferred to Station Summerside, PEI, this date. Sgt. HJ Stewart is his replacement.

LAC Prout who was hospitalized in St-Sauveur Hospital, in Val d’Or is being transferred to Montreal Military Hospital for further physiotherapy.

A Street Dance was held at this station. A good time was had by all.

S/L Carrigan, Med Services, F/L Monroe and F/L Dickle and S/L from Supply Branch in command visited this unit this date.

40 personnel proceeded to Station Parent to participate in their Summer Carnival. The Zone play-off between Parent and Senneterre was held at the Carnival as well. Station Parent won the play-off.

WO1 JJ Aucoin and Sgt. TE Farthing from ADCHQ visited the Power Plant this unit on this date.

Evaluation of AN/FPS-507 number II completed by site personnel this date.

Trade advancement commenced with lectures from Cpl. Klassen AFP. Three personnel are writing trade boards in October. They are LAC’s Rigby and Clifton and LAW Oldham.

Elevation drive motor on the AN/FPS-507 number one changed by CGE crew as a follow up of the normal overhaul. A four team Flag Football league was formed. An all star team won the zone title and proceeded to Station Winnipeg to participate in the RCAF finals. Station Senneterre placed third in the tournament.

F/L Croswell and F/O Golding from ADCHQ reported in for inspection of Messes and Institutes, to depart 13 Sep 61.

A Klondike Dance was sponsored by HQ personnel for the Station.

E359, Unknown – Puritan had no flight plan so carried track as unknown until it was identified as TCA 857 by Battleaxe through a flight plan revision.

Until now, the 1710 KC transmission key at the Raid Master position has not been spring loaded, and had to be purposely shut off. However this situation will be undoubtedly be rectified since a lady from Senneterre reported hearing a radio programme which was neither rehearsed or censored by CBC.

A Mallard aircraft PQE, reported in attempting a beacon let-down into Val d’Or, due to fog. If he had missed the field he intended to continue VFR to La Sarre. ATC was advised of his intentions. However, he did not let down and land at Val d’Or. Today’s Counterpunch exercise results were 2 MA’s and 2 MI’s.

HL Bravo 1 aborted a Chessmatch mission with fuel feed problems. He did not declare an emergency and returned safely to base. Unknown H358. No possibilities on this object affected a scramble by Sugarcane, and was identified as a "Change Shot Faker II" by #1 Sector using IFF and authentication tables, prior to intercept. Boneyard 58 today allowed Puritans interceptors only 6 MA’s for 17 attempts.

Three unknown tracks were identified friendly during this day. One civilian aircraft and 2 KC-97’s were scrambled on and identified friendly. 18 Super Sabres (F-100’s) were scheduled to overfly VO en route to Goose Bay on this day. Probably Jerry Lee and his squadron on their way to Hurly Cum Burly.

F/O Cowan was relieved of duties as Crew 1 Court Jester to answer the telephone in the OpsO’s office during the portly gentleman’s absence flying. F/O Webster very ably replaced F/O Cowan in the above mentioned duties.

The pot hole left in the Val d’Or runway by the spring thaw in May has now been repaired and the runway is again fully serviceable.

CINC NORAD declared a "Cocked Pistol" on this date for an exercise "Think Ahead". This Battle Staff exercise included ECM against interceptors who gained 6 MA’s for 18 attempts.

All available Ops personnel participated in a search for a little girl missing from PMQs this afternoon. However, the child was found shortly after the search began, and operations returned to normal. F/O G Edge was taken on strength at this unit today. Gerry is a CF-100 Navigator reporting in from Falconbridge for his second radar unit tour.

Interception of SAC aircraft by ADC aircraft is again officially authorized by SAC/NORAD HQ with the stipulation that all interceptors must be unarmed. GCA limits at VO have been reduced from 500’ and 1 mile to 400’ and 1 mile.

A Big Blast Mission was scored, followed closely by a Manual Radar Site Run. Another BBM was scored in the evening on this date.

Unknown E358 was scrambled upon, but was identified prior to interception and the North Bay "Z" aircraft was returned to base. Four MA’s and 11 MI’s were the results of an ECM #1 Mission on this date. Puritan took control of fighters from Yamhill to complete a Boneyard Mission which resulted in 3 MA’s and 3 MI’s.

A small fire in the woods near Lac Des Loups was reported by a Boneyard aircraft to VO tower and the Forestry Department in Senneterre. However, on closer check, the aircraft reported it to be a campfire in a mining community.

Seven officers and two airmen proceeded to a Scout camp beyond Val d’Or this evening to apply paint to a newly constructed Scout mess hall. Once again this unit donates its time and talent to the production of better educated and more capable breed of modern young Canadian. Progress is our greatest product.

Practice intercepts and normal operations mark this date.

For the past few weeks the preparation for this year’s Air Force Day at Val d’Or airport has taken most of the spare time of all the personnel involved in the many committees required to put the show on the road. S/K Cairns, the AFD Co-ordinator has the situation well in hand and the big task remaining is to set up the displays and facilities one day prior to the event.

An RAF Jet Bomber ran an ECM Mission with Welcome control this date. Clearance for run was obtained through Puritan.

This Unit was on minimum manning due to preparations for Air Force Day at Val d’Or. The short time allowed for the setting up of displays, fencing and refreshments booths required a large number of personnel.

Over 4,000 people crowded the Val d’Or Airport today to witness a display of their Air Force in action.

The Air Force Day show consisted of static displays of aircraft, AC&W radar, communications, search and rescue and fire fighting equipment, and flying exhibitions by Lancaster, Neptune, CF-100 and many other aircraft. The Red Knight thrilled the crowd with an aerobatic display and the day was climaxed by an exhibition of the formation and aerobatic abilities of the famous "Golden Hawks".

In all, Senneterre’s Air Force Day was a crowning success, and the co-operation and assistance given by such civilian agencies as the Val d’Or police, Department of Highways and the RCMP in no small way contributed to this success.

For every dance the Piper must be paid and on this date a large group of Senneterre personnel were employed returning Val d’Or airport to normal operations. Of all the necessary tasks, the picking up of empty soft drink cans and paper seemed the most detrimental to the strong back involved.

Puritan gave surveillance assistance to the 26^th NORAD Division during an exercise "Sioux Knife" on this date.

Log entry for this date reads: 0708 – fell off chair. 0709 – back on chair. 1200 – off duty. It appears that our seating problems still exist. It is true that during a tour of duty a GCI controller sits in a chair in every conceivable manner and posture. Some of them are just certain not to work out.

The first logged evidence of the instability of the VO runway during GCI let-downs appears here. A position used at one time for the end of the runway would be as much as five miles in error the next day. Confusing to the controller and less than comforting to the pilot. B377 was made unknown by Battleaxe before entering Puritan’s area, and subsequently made friendly by Sugarcane.

Here endeth June. During the month, Puritan controlled 315 intercepts, of which 70 were tactical and 36 were ECM Missions. There were 11 unknown tracks in the area of which 1 was identified by intercept.

Normal operations and training mark the opening of this month.

On this date, in Operations – time stopped. All the IBM clocks packed up and went on a holiday. However, the situation was rectified and time finally marched on again.

Unknown M381 (C-119 VC 2210) was identified friendly by Sugarcane on completion of a check turn. FtrCops are no longer required to man the PBX position.

An Otter and a C-45 worked with Senneterre’s Search and Rescue Team on practice manoeuvres near here today. The aircraft were required to locate the team at which time the team would contact them on Walkie Talkie sets. The aircraft reported locating the team, however the flares issued to the team were not operational. Boneyard 56 allowed only 1 MA for 8 attempts made against him in an ECM exercise today.

A Dakota aircraft continued its summer long war of the beasties by spreading a fine mist of bug spray over the unit early this evening. Flowers, cars and children plus the players and spectators at a ball game all required a thorough water spray after the operation. 1 CF-100 was scrambled on M368. Unknown for Tomboys control. VC 21437, a T-33 over VO with tip tank problems jettisoned same near VO. Puritan’s score improved today with a Counterpunch score at 5 MA’s and 3 MI’s against an ECM target.

Manual Radar Sire Run scored.

Big Noise Delta was declared for the 2 ½ hour "Sioux Leader" exercise.

Big Noise was again declared for a 4 ½ exercise.

Big Blast Mission scored.

Unknown E322, scrambled on, identified friendly prior to intercept. Boneyard Mission results today were 2 MA’s and 2 MI’s.

Three Site Runs and one Big Blast were scored today. Boneyard 65 flew again today and permitted only 2 MA’s for 8 attempts by Puritan.

Unknown E349 was reclassified friendly as KSC (high civil jet) by Puritan.

Manual Radar Site run scored.

Unknown E592, identified friendly by Sugarcane as weather? VC 636 searching area for missing helicopter NCJ. After 3 ½ hours of searching, it was discovered that NCJ had landed at Rupert House, and the search was called off.

Cocked Pistol for Catseye No. 4, a Battle staff exercise. During the 4 ½ hours of this exercise Puritan scored 3 MA’s for 16 attempts on evasive ECM targets.

A CF-100 from St. Huberts will be flying from HU – Kirkland Lake, Roberval, St. Huberts to exercise SIF equipment at GCI’s along this route. HK 21 was scrambled from North Bay on Unknown M376 who altered heading 20 degrees forcing Puritan to hand interceptor over to Yamhill in a tail chase. No further information is logged.

Puritan scored a MRSR, and successfully completed 5 of the 9 intercepts attempted against Boneyard 65.

Another MRSR.

Puritan controlled interceptors against SAC/ECM aircraft today during a Big Blast mission. The results were 1 MA and 3 MI’s.

E392 Unknown, was identified friendly.

The scheduled Battle Staff STM was conducted as usual on Wednesday mornings. While on a training mission, HL D2 squawked emergency. The unit emergency procedures were carried out and D1 was vectored onto D2, however D2 cancelled the emergency. Unknown, E308 was IDFR as 1 B-47 by HK Z1. On an ECM #1 exercise, Puritan scored 3 MA’s for 10 attempts.

Of ten runs against BY3, 9 were successful. MCL operating difficulties in the Hopedale area necessitated a concentrated watch on the area north of this unit.

Unknown jamming was photographed until it ceased. Source was not discovered. A Big Blast Mission was scored. Effective jamming by Boneyard 54 on an ECM #1 Mission held Puritans results to 3 MA’s to 8 attempts.

According to the logs this was a "very Quiet Day".

F/O Webster and Crawford volunteered their services as sod layers on this date. Another step toward beautification of the province. During the month of July, Puritan controlled 447 intercepts, of which 83 were tactical and 57 were ECM Missions. There were 11 unknown tracks of which 2 were identified by intercept.

Station sports programmes are now in full swing and a few bruises and scratches are turning up amongst the participants.

A manual radar site run was scored by Puritan.

HL Purple 1 off VO flew a right hand triangle – (receivers U/S) and squawked emergency. Purple 2 was vectored to him and both were given a GCI/GCA into VO. Unknown E384, E385, E386 all were IDFR’d as part of a Big Blast Mission. A four hour exercise took place this date. The results of a Boneyard ECM mission today were 2 MA’s and 8 MI’s.

Normal operations and training continue through this period with little other activity of note.

Big Blast Mission scored.

Desk Top 4, a Battle Staff STP exercise was expected on this date.

Puritan’s interceptors scored 100% on a Chessmatch exercise today; 4 MA’s for 4 attempts. A Boneyard aircraft evened the score by charging Puritan 5 MI’s for 8 attempts.

An example of someone waiting too long to get Radar Assistance is the TCA flight 254 who asked for storm information, but could not be picked up because he was already in the centre of the storm area.

Another MRSR was scored today. F/O Gilmour departed from Senneterre on this date on release. Bob is intending to begin university studies next month in Toronto. Until his one year tour here, he flew CF-100’s at North Bay.

Henceforth Chessmatch exercises will include heading and speed changes. At approximately this date the St. Huberts CF-100 target force begins flying as targets for all Chessmatch/Counterpunch exercises. Few if any of these aircraft will have AI radar and extra caution will be necessary on attacks. A BBM and a MRSR were scored today.

The source of a tone on 121.5 mcs could not be determined. Emergency procedures and a complete aircraft check were carried out in the area – no aircraft were experiencing difficulty.

Puritans results for a Chessmatch today fell off to 1 MA for 4 attempts.

STP exercise Desk Top IV was run and an MRSR was scored.

Unknown M363, suspected as being VC 678, a CF-100 on cross country was 8 minutes ahead of his flight plan time. He was contacted on VHF and identified by a position report.

2 MRSR’s were scored on this date. HL Black 2, while on a training mission, lost his receivers and was joined by Black 1, who accompanied him back to VO.

Unknown E327 was identified friendly by Sugarcane – a not altogether unusual occurrence. The results of a Chessmatch were 4 MA’s and no MI’s, but again Boneyard took vengeance by allowing Puritan 3 MA’s for 10 attempts.

Schedules were arranged today to allow Ops personnel to attend the Summer Carnival at RCAF Station Parent. This carnival is part of an annual sports competition between the two units. Only 1 MI marred a perfect score for Puritan’s 7 attempts against evasive targets on a Chessmatch exercise today.

The scope position of VO runway is still wandering and remains a mystery to the technical staff and a problem for the let-down artists. Unknown E316 was identified by Battleaxe as a SAR aircraft en route from Frobisher to Ottawa.

Unknown M354 was identified by position report as Boneyard 1 on an ECM mission 30 minutes late on flight plan. Unknown M355 was reclassified friendly as a faker by Sugarcane. A 1000 cycle tone on 121.5 mcs proved to be a CF-100 on the ground at VO experiencing radio trouble, and not an emergency. A MRSR was scored by this unit. On an ECM #7 exercise, Puritan scored 2 MA’s and 1 MI.

Boneyard 52 on an ECM mission returned to St. Huberts with a cockpit full of smoke. He felt that there was no real emergency and was cleared to Montreal approach. The results of a Chessmatch exercise today were 4 MA’s and 3 MI’s, and a following ECM #1 mission produced 3 MA’s and 2 MI’s.

Investigation of emergency 1000 cycle tone on 121.5 proved the source to be VC 674 Redcoat 5 who had lost all his radios.

An ECM mission was terminated by Sugarcane today. The jamming was affecting radar at Malton approach control which was controlling an aircraft emergency in the area. Today’s Chessmatch exercise resulted in 5 MA’s and 2 MI’s.

Puritan batted 0 today on an ECM #6 exercise with 3 attempts and 3 MI’s.

During the month of August, Puritan controlled 416 intercepts, of which 84 were tactical and 45 were ECM missions. There were 15 unknown tracks in the area of which none were identified by intercept.

F/O Webster volunteered to escort a party of five visitors through the Ops building today on strength of the request that the escorting officer be the best looking gentleman on the crew. Today’s Chessmatch results were 6 MA’s and MI’s.

F/O’s JFM Ouellet and DA Stewart were taken on strength today. Maurice Ouellet is a CF-100 pilot of long standing from Ottawa, and Dave Stewart is a navigator from North Bay. Both are on their first GCI tour and naturally very pleased to be here.

A VC 651 reported a forest fire approximately 70 miles north of Senneterre. It covered an area of ¼ mile. This information was passed to the Lands and Forests Department in Senneterre. The results of a Boneyard ECM mission today were 3 MA’s for 8 attempts. Lost 40, a SAC aircraft at 36,000 feet reported the above mentioned forest fire adding that it seemed to be heading in a south easterly direction.

A SAC navigation leg was scored by Puritan.

Further information on the forest fire reported on 5 Sep was passed by this unit to VO tower since an English speaking official of the Department of Lands & Forests could not be contacted. Results of an ECM mission were 4 MA’s and 8 MI’s.

Exercise Sioux Noose, consisting RCAF/USAF participation and lasting more than 24 hours began its alert build up this morning. Puritans 2 commitments on SAC Big Blast targets resulted in 1 MA.

Exercise "Sioux Noose" continued until 1645Z on this date. The intercept results for the exercise were 8 MA’s, 2 MI’s and 5 non commitments.

As is the case on many other days when little activity of not is entered herein, a large number of practice intercepts were completed. This type of training, which is continuous is considered to be quite commonplace and is especially mentioned only when incidents of incidents, i.e. aircraft emergencies etc., occur.

A check on an emergency squawk again revealed an aircraft with VHF transmitter problems and no serious problems.

Big Blast intercept results were 1 MA and 3 MI’s. Chessmatch results were 2 MA’s and 6 MI’s.

HL Oscar 1, enroute to North Bay declared an emergency with his cockpit full of smoke. He proceeded to North Bay under Tomboy control and landed safely. An MRSR was scored by Puritan.

Puritan scored a Big Blast Mission.

High winds at St. Hubert today caused the cancellation of a Chessmatch exercise. The target aircraft were unable to get airborne. E320 Unknown, off flight plan, was scrambled on by Ballot. Results are not known.

The annual Battle of Britain Day church parade took place today.

News of approaching visit of the Air Staff Visiting team to this unit causes a stir of interest. Everyone is busily preparing for the event, and a maximum effort is being put forth to ensure that everyone is up to the required standard. Today’s Chessmatch results were 4 MA’s and 3 MI’s.

Unknown E356, 30 minutes ahead of flight plan, was identified by position report as 3 SAC aircraft. F/O RL Greer began his training today at Camp Pettawawa as an Officer in the Canadian Army Ordinance Corps. Bob has been on strength at this unit since October 1951, and his transfer to the Army was completed on this date. Boneyard 55 scored again with 6 MI’s against Puritan’s 2 MA’s.

The usual Battle Staff STP problem was run today. STMs still run as scheduled on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday of every week. Boneyard 2 and Puritan fought to a draw on the ECM mission today. Results were 2 MA’s and 2 MI’s.

Catseye 5, a 5 ½ hour exercise took place on this date. For a total of 12 attempts against evasive target, Puritans interceptors were successful 4 times.

On this date something approaching a crisis is logged. Main power off on radios which are operating on emergency power. The Ops reservoir is dry and air conditioning system is unserviceable. Power plant advises diesels may have to be shut down due to overheating. Much like Hitchcock mystery the ending is left to the reader, for no further mention is made of the situation in the logs.

A VC 675 contacted Puritan for flight following from VO to Belcher Island to VO. However radio contact could not be maintained and 675 crossed the MCL northbound, turned around and penetrated without authorization. For his efforts he was made Unknown by Battleaxe, who later accept Puritans identification of friendly, and violated by the MCL unit for unauthorized penetration. It was just not his day.

Preparation of the Ops building for a visit by the Deputy MND, M Sevigney on 1 Oct were begun on this date. Intercepts on a SAC Big Blast Mission resulted in 2 MI’s for 2 attempts.

HK Z was scrambled after M367 which he subsequently identified friendly as a USAF KC-97. In this case NNR would not accept SIF and KAA Authentication for identification.

Four attempts against evasive Big Blast mission targets resulted in 3 MA’s and 1 MI. VC 303 passed through the area en route from Ottawa to Chibougamau with A/M Campbell aboard, the flight returned to Ottawa the same day.

ECM #1 results were 1 MA and 1 MI. F/O Kurash was taken on strength today. He has just completed an overseas tour on a Sabre squadron and this is his first AC&W tour.

A common occurrence – Trenton SAR initiated a check on a Norseman aircraft CF-GSJ which was 1 ½ hours overdue on a flight from Great Whale to Rupert House. A check with Fecteau airlines in Senneterre disclosed that this aircraft had landed at Senneterre over 1 hour previous and had not closed his flight plan. By this time the pilot was firmly entrenched in the Ubald Hotel in Senneterre. A Chessmatch exercise in which the target employed evasive action and communications jamming (Spoofing) resulted in 1 MA and 4 MI’s

An MRSR was scored by Puritan. The SAC boys never let it up. During the month of September, Puritan controlled 348 intercepts of which 106 were tactical and 44 were ECM missions. There were 13 unknown tracks in the area of which 1 was identified by intercept.

Flight following was given to VC 1000, the Deputy Minister of Defence en route to RCAF Station Senneterre, where he attended the Officer’s Mess Fall Formal Ball.

HK Purple 1 returned from Yamhill control to VO with a suspected blown tire and landed safely. F/L’s Beasleigh and Birch arrived at this unit with their little bag of goodies in the form of exams to be written by Ops Officers and NCOs.

Unknown E369 was identified by Battleaxe. A Battle Staff exercise "Dutch Master" took place today. 17 intercept attempts resulted in 6 MA’s and 11 MI’s.

The effect of jamming still obvious after today’s ECM #1 mission when 8 attempts resulted in 1 MA.

F/O PF Enns, an ex CF-100 pilot, was taken on this unit strength this date.

Big Blast mission scored.

Manual Radar Site run scored.

Counterpunch results today were 2 MI’s for 2 attempts against non evasive ECM targets.

Exercise Sky Shield involving all of NORAD and testing its various functions, primarily security control of air traffic, took place on this date and lasted over nine hours. USAF F-101s were employed out of Val d’Or along with our usual CF-100 aircraft.

Exercise "Sky Shield" terminated today. The intercept results were 10 MA’s for 32 scrambles. 8 of these scrambles resulted in no commitments.

Manual Radar Site run. Approximately on this date a Forestry Engineer from Senneterre disappeared into the woods near Beattyville. RCAF SAR units began an immediate search of the area.

W/C Underhill, CO RCAF Station Senneterre, joined in the search with a C-45 today, but no trace of the lost man has been found. The year’s first cold weather and snow add to the search problem and increase doubts as to the welfare of the lost man.

On this day is written a bloody page in the history of 34 AC&W Squadron. In the true Scottish tradition, F/O D (Haggis McBagpipe) MacKay was little too tight fisted to buy a finger nail trimmer. In search of some inexpensive way to pare his nylon snaggers, the gentleman in question experimented with an open backed electric fan. The experiment didn’t work, but the MO did – on Haggis’ chopped up knuckles. There is a moral to this story. ECM #1 results for 12 attempts were 4 MA’s, 8 MI’s and 1 finger.

Results of an ECM #7 mission conducted on this date were 2 MA’s and 3 MI’s.

As a reminder that the holiday season is drawing steadily nearer, our OpsO, F/L Maxwell is already arranging the Christmas/New Years schedule.

F/O HR Wolff, who has been on strength at this unit since April 1959, was taken on strength at Ramore on this date. Roy is one of the first Canadians to man this unit which has until now been manned by USAF personnel. 2 MA’s and 2 MI’s were the results of an ECM #3 mission today. During the month of October, Puritan controlled 343 intercepts of which 81 were tactical and 29 were ECM missions. There were 31 unknown tracks in the area of which 1 was identified by intercept.

F/O G Hills was taken on strength as an intercept director on this date. This is Gerry’s first ground tour. He reported in from a Sabre squadron overseas.

Two events of unusual interest. 1 Unknown M367 was identified friendly by a revised position report, and F/L Krahn arrived at work – early!

F/O MF Clark’s name was taken off the strength of this unit today. Fred has been at Senneterre since March 1959. He is reporting to Station Lac St. Denis where he will assume duties as No. 1 Sector Surveillance Officer. Puritans Chessmatch results today were 2 MA’s and 4 MI’s. Four of Puritans 4 Big Blast intercepts resulted in MI’s today.

Sgt. Whitehead had 27 Boy Scouts from Malartic through the Ops building.

Another swivel chair spun out of control and left F/L Krahn on the floor.

Puritan successfully completed both of two Chessmatch intercepts today.

Two MRSRs were scored during this day. Life cannot be too difficult for our little rodent friends in the Ops building. When F/O Bland offered a piece of chocolate cake to a mouse in the DD cabin, it was flatly refused, and Mickey left in a huff. It appears that our high standard of living is affecting everyone these days.

With the large number of civilian personnel passing through and working in the Ops building, a number of security infractions in the form of unlocked doors have taken place. Air Force Policemen have entered the building at various times without the knowledge of Ops personnel. Action to rectify this is being taken by Ops staff.

Another case of radio failure occurred today when HK V2 lost his receivers, V1 led him home safely to VO. Nordair 91, flight planned on a route from VO – OA – to VO was overdue on his return to VO. Toronto AMIS alerted SAR and all AC&W units in the area carried out extensive communications checks. Two hours later it was finally discovered that Nordair 91 had never taken off from Val d’Or. Counterpunch results today were 6 MA’s and 1 MI.

Puritan scored a SAC Navigation leg.

Manual Radar Site Runs are still the order of the day with Strategic Air Command.

Another SAC Navigation leg was scored this date, and ECM targets allowed 2 MA’s and 2 MI’s on a Counterpunch mission.

LAC Rigby of the unit AFP again entered the Ops building through an unlocked door and reported to the Duty Director. All Ops personnel and civilian contractors have been reminded of their responsibilities in this matter, and a regular security check by the Commissionaires had been initiated, to ensure that this situation does not arise again.

For every day down in the Operations Log at least one Air Defence Warning Test is shown. These tests are composed of a complete NORAD wide communications check and a practice authentication can be originated by any NORAD agency. Their purpose is to ensure that information passed between NORAD agencies can be passed and received correctly and with a minimum of delay.

Dutch Master, an eight and a half hour exercise took place this date. 15 attacks during Dutch Master resulted in 9 MA’s and 6 MI’s. F/O Louzwa, a Sabre Jockey from Air Division was taken on strength today.

Three MA’s and 2 MI’s were the results of a Counterpunch exercise today.

Puritan scored a Big Blast Mission comprised of 6 SAC aircraft, and dropped another game to Boneyard 59 with a score of 2 MA’s and 4 MI’s.

M351 an unknown was scrambled upon and intercepted by HK 16. M351 was IDFR’d as 1 CF-100.

Manual Radar Site Run was scored.

Exercise "Sioux Pipe", an 8 hour exercise took place on this date. During this time Puritan controlled 15 tactical intercepts of which 7 were MA’s. 5 were kills and 8 were missed intercepts.

An ECM #7 exercise consisting of CF-100 penetrating targets and C-119 covering jammers, took place today. Results for 6 attempts were 1 MA and 5 MI’s. During the month of November, Puritan controlled 279 intercepts of which 73 were tactical and 12 were ECM missions. There were 13 unknown tracks in the area of which none were identified by intercept.
