    COMMENTARY

    Personnel:

During the period of this report, there was a change of Administrative Officer. 1st Lt. William A Wareham was replaced, due to rotation, by Captain David H Henshell.

The newly assigned Administration Officer is programmed to arrive this station on 26 January 1959.

The personnel problem as has been reported in the past, has been slightly relieved due to the assignment of new personnel in Supply and Operations; however, the Officer personnel, in reference to Weapons Directors, is at a minimum.

    Equipment Performance:

During the month of October, the Wire Maintenance Section installed a new cable for the proposed and approved fire alarm system on this site. Trouble was encountered on the main site cable and after a thorough inspection by Canadian Marconi and Base Communications, it was decided that the cable must be replaced. This will be done by the Canadian Marconi Company.

    Facilities:

Contemplating a site cable change in November, Wire Maintenance switched certain telephones to different cables while the main cable was being installed. A storm moved in during the latter part of November and held up the replacing of the new site cable. This condition continued into and through the month of December. In addition to the weather condition, non arrival of Neoprene Cable splicing kits, which are not expected to arrive until some time in the month of January, has also held up this project. However, a temporary cable is being installed to help alleviate some of the line outage created by the old and faulty cable.

Phones were installed in the recently remodelled Officers Lounge. A switch was installed on the switchboard connecting a dial phone to one trunk line for use during alerts as an aid to rapid round up.

A new GCI line was installed connecting this unit with the 450th Refuelling Unit at Argentia Naval Air Base, Newfoundland.

A remote control unit C-806 was installed for remote control of back up communications equipment. Re-installations of the antennas for back-up equipment from the Operations building roof top to a ninety (90) foot pole were completed. A thirty (30) foot pole was installed to carry messenger and cables to the Operations Building, from the ninety (90) foot pole.

During the first week of December the Officers Lounge was completed and accepted by the Squadron Commander.

    Maintenance and Supply Problems:

At the close of the year only two (2) supply positions were unfilled, that of a 64010 and a 64151, one (1) each.

The system of continuous inventory was placed into effect whereby 1/6 of the 84B cards for Tech Supply would be inventoried during the first week of each month. The inventory section also checks each card for completeness and readjusts reorder points where needed. A spot check of cards inventoried in November was taken in the latter part of December with excellent results. The system is working smoothly.

In assuming responsibility for Tech Order Distribution, a complete review of all TO’s on back order was made and individual 3x5 cards prepared for each TO. Two visits were made to the Base TO Distribution Section and the system was reviewed for procedures. The system as adopted, is working satisfactorily.

A new Brownline listing of Pinetree spares was received from 64th Air Division. Each item in stock was checked against the listing. Excesses were declared and later turned into base supply.

The warehouse for Unit Supply was rearranged for better space utilization.

An AN/GPS-T2 Trainer was received and installed.

    Morale:

The morale of the squadron is excellent.

The Squadron received the Commander’s Trophy during the past reporting period. Photo’s and supporting information will be submitted in the next report.

There are no other significant items of historical interest for this period.
