Command Section:

A Dining-In was held on May 25^th to honor the departing commander, Major James E Cashman. Honored guests were Colonel Victor Milner, Commander of Goose Air Defense Sector, and Mr. Don Wilson, prominent businessman from St. John’s, Newfoundland. Major Cashman gave a departing speech. T/Sgt. Frederick Lewis, recently transferred to this unit, was presented the Air Force Commendation Medal by Colonel Milner.

S/Sgt. Joseph D Alexander departed PCS and was replaced by Airman First Class Bosher, TDY from Ernest Harmon AFB.

T/Sgt. Wesley Grant, Jr., Food Service Supervisor, was selected as NCO of the Month and of the Quarter.

Operations Section:

Activity during this reporting period was normal. A Tactical Evaluation was conducted by the 64^th Air Division during the month of May with a satisfactory rating. The dias and Intercept Control Technician’s desk were painted, and the coffee bar was moved from Operations to the room formally occupied by the technical representatives.

Two trainees were administered the AFSKT test and the Phase IV test of formal OJT. One NCO was administered Phase I test of formal OJT for the 7-level AFSC. ICT, and 15-J-1C training was given to crew personnel in addition to the regular academic training. SAC EWO SCRIBS were brought up to date.

Three live missions and seventeen simulated missions were conducted. A special ECM mission was conducted by the Goose Sector for Operations and Radar Maintenance personnel. Captains Alan J Altznauer and Herbert A Keenan were upgraded to combat-ready/skilled status.

The section gained one officer, Captain Alan J Altznauer, and five enlisted men. It is over one officer and short four enlisted men.

Base Engineer Activities:

The Civil Engineering activities for the quarter have resulted in the completion of many projects. During this reporting period, the Officer’s, NCO’s, and Airmen’s Lounges, and Radio Station WVNN, were renovated by the Canadian Marconi Team. Installed in the lounges were wall panelling, acoustic tile ceiling and fluorescent lights. All corridors are in process of being painted by two overhire civilian personnel who are performing an excellent job thus far. In addition, an acoustic tile ceiling is being installed in the Officers Club patio.

During the quarter, Captain John L Gargaro was assigned to the squadron, replacing Mr. Max W Smith as Base Civil Engineer. Mr. Smith has served as Base Civil Engineer for the past five months.

Fire Department – Normal fire prevention was accomplished during this quarter. SM/Sgt. Joseph C Byerely was replaced by S/Sgt. Benjamin J Holloway. An inspection was conducted by the Harmon Fire Department. No major discrepancies were discovered. The training of the fire fighting teams has progressed satisfactorily.

Transportation – Normal vehicle maintenance was accomplished during this quarter. Total miles on the vehicles for the quarter was 13,012 and 2,112 gallons of gas was used for an average of 6.3 miles per gallon. Considerable difficulty is still being experienced in obtaining parts for deadlined equipment. In addition, T/Sgt. Lee R Harner was assigned to the Transportation section as Maintenance Technician.

Contract airlift has been accomplished by EPA with PMQ, EYO and PBY aircrafts. During the quarter, the following quantities were flown by air:

Communications and Electronics:

General – In addition to normal maintenance and operational activities, the following special projects and activities were initiated, and/or completed:

During April the CEM section was inspected by the AFM 66-1 Inspection Team from Goose Air Defense Sector. This team provided assistance in the implementation of 66-1 procedures. The overall rating given for this section was favorable.

During June, Captain Dietz, CM/Sgt. Anderson, T/Sgt. Lewis and S/Sgt. Weaver attended the AFM 66-1 Conference at Goose ADS. The purpose of the conference was to discuss and resolve any problems concerning 66-1 implementation. Information received was given to all squadron work center supervisors.

Safety Boards were fabricated and installed in all work centers. Classes on AFM 66-1 procedures are being given by Contract Technical Service Technicians to all personnel in the maintenance work centers.

Radar Section:

During this quarter, six airmen were administered the SKT 30352 test. All but one received satisfactory scores. A continuing "clean up and paint up" of the maintenance shop has been conducted. Airman Edwards was promoted to the grade of Staff Sergeant.

Radio Maintenance – The maintenance of the squadron mobile radios has been excellent this period. There were no major outages experienced on any of the eight sets on hand.

Wire Maintenance – In station wiring of individual rooms was initiated this quarter. In addition, the closed circuit radio station (WVNN) was re-wired.

Supply:

Major proportion of work done involved the preparation of all existing storage facilities for the Gap-Pine Resupply season.

Airman First Class Miguel Gomez was promoted to the grade of Staff Sergeant. There were no personnel changes for the quarter.
