Command Section:

Lt. Col. Archie M Rockwell departed this station PCS 29 March 1964 to Headquarters, Reno Air Defense Sector, Stead AFB, Nevada. Major Harold M Ludlow Jr. took over as acting commander during the interim until the new commander arrived 15 May 1964.

S/Sgt. Clifford M Strawderman was assigned to this section as Personnel Clerk.

Operations Section:

This section participated in six (6) live and thirteen (13) simulated missions.

Lt. Carol A Glidewell passed his combat readiness test 31 December 1963, and took control of Alpha crew 1 January 1964.

Captain Robert M Ross, 1744A, arrived at this station 9 January 1964, and departed to E Harmon AFB on 12 January 1964 for medical reasons. He is presently awaiting his new PCS orders.

1^st Lt. Conrad A Boecker, 1741A, arrived at this station 11 March 1964.

This section received a staff assistance visit on 25 March 1964 from Goose NORAD Sector.

Civil Engineer Activities:

The Civil Engineering shops performed normal maintenance with new work limited to man hours acceptable by Air Force standards. Hallways and living quarters were painted by contract painters. The power and heating plants were completely painted. The power plant completed all their preventative maintenance in accordance with Tech Orders. Despite the fact that snowfall was much greater than normal, our personnel kept the road to town open with no major equipment breakdowns.

Fire Department:

Normal fire prevention was carried out. Indoctrination of personnel, especially the fire teams, has been boosted.

Motor Pool:

All normal vehicle maintenance was carried out. An ambulance was picked up for station use. Total mileage on vehicles this quarter was 9,401 miles with 1,447 gallons of gasoline used for an average of 6.5 miles per gallon.

Transportation:

Contract airlift was carried out by Laurentian’s Otter augmented by a DC-3 making four trips. During the quarter the following quantities were airlifted:

Communications and Electronics:

General – Overall CEM Manning as of 31 March 1964 was 100% (39 authorized, 39 assigned). In addition to normal maintenance and operational activities, the following special projects were carried over/initiated during this quarter by the GEEIA team with expected completion dates as indicated. AN/FPS-6 – April, 1964; AN/FPS-20A – June 1964.

A new crypto scheme was received and has been an in place date of 1 July 1964.

Maintenance Control and Materiel Control Centers:

Thirteen pieces of test equipment were sent to Canadian Marconi at St. John’s. The FPS-6 and FPS-20 test equipment was readied for shipment to 4081 CAMS for calibration in order to be ready when the two sets are operational. All other test equipment is overdue calibration.

Radar Maintenance:

Mr. Sid Trimble, a CTSP from GADS arrived on 23 March to give operations and maintenance instruction in the AN/FPS-6 and OA23-25. He found a large number of discrepancies and missing equipment and is preparing a report for GADS covering these areas. Pre-Depot Level Maintenance teams arrived for a Pre DLM on both the FPS-6 and FPS-20.

Approval is expected shortly for plans to move the IFF/SIF equipment to the tower. This should solve many problems.

Wire Maintenance – The inplace date for the GTA-6 scheme is now October 1964. The cables to the GATR site were checked and marked for replacement. Wiring under the Operations dias was cleaned up to eliminate possible problem areas.

Communications Center:

The crypto and Comm Centers were consolidated in January to ease operations. New multiplex teletype equipment was installed in Pole Vault 10 March 1964.

Supply:

SM/Sgt. Farg from GADS Director of Materiel Department conducted a Staff Assistance visit 24 through 26 April 1964.

Screening of electronic spares in technical supply containers, the project being 85% complete. The following projects were completed during this quarter:
