    COMMENTARY

    Command Section:

    Major Howard G Clayville attended the Goose Air Defense Sector Commander’s Conference from 17 Feb 65 to 24 Feb 65.

    Administrative Activities:

    All discrepancies noted in the GADS Staff Assistance Visit (8-10 Dec 64) were corrected.

    A review was made of all publications and forms and requisitions were made where applicable.

    The US Savings Bond Drive achieved a 83.2% participation rate as of 31 Mar 65.

    Personnel Activities (PMP):

    Three OJT Inspections were completed during the quarter.

    Security and Law Enforcement:

    Two Expanded Security exercises were conducted during the quarter. The results were very satisfactory.

    New Security Alert Teams were formed to fill vacancies resulting from reassignments. The new members received indoctrination on procedures and weapons handling.

    Medical Activities:

    There were three narcotic inventories conducted during the quarter.

    Lt. JG Ronald Zinzer, 7010, US Coast Guard, assigned to Coast Guard Cutter "Duane", Home Installation, Constitution Wharf, Boston, Mass., hospitalized in International Grenfell Association Hospital, St. Anthony, Newfoundland on 26 Dec 64. Diagnosis was ruptured blood vessels in stomach. Air evacuated to E Harmon AFB, Newfoundland on 6 Jan 65. 921st PMP reported all casualty information in accordance with AFM 30-4.

    Civil Engineering Activities:

    Serious damage occurred to the walls and ceiling of the new Multi-Purpose recreation building during February when snow was apparently blown through the 1 ½" vent slot under the roof eaves. The contractor was directed to remove the snow and close the vents with a metal strip fastened to the soffit by self tapping screws. The acceptance inspection was held on 26 March with several construction and design deficiencies being noted.

    AF Form 123 "Changed Utilization Request", for the Dispensary and VIP Quarters was submitted to 26th ADIV through 4081st BDCE on 31 March 1965.

    Approval was received for overhire of Mr. Carl Milley as an electrician from 25 Feb through 22 Apr 65.

    Power Plant – The 30KW emergency generator at the TACAN Station was overhauled by Canadian Marconi Company personnel and station personnel overhauled the 10KW PE-95 BEACON emergency generator and replaced the cylinder head gaskets on the 60KW GMC Series 71 generator.

    Heating Plant – During March, Mr. Max Smith, CE General Foreman, and Mr. Albert Nichols, Heating Plant Operator, attended a four day course in Boiler Water Treatment and Analysis at Stewart AFB, NY.

    Mobil Maintenance Team – During January the Mobil Maintenance Team made emergency repairs to nearly 15,000 feet of overhead electrical distribution lines which were destroyed by a severe ice storm. During March they accomplished emergency repairs on 17,000 feet of line which was damaged by severe icing.

    Fire Department Activities – The annual flushing of the standpipe system and weight check of the CO2 fire extinguishers was completed in March.

    Motor Pool Activities – During this reporting period 8,490 vehicle miles were realized with 1,327 gallons of fuel being used for an average of 6.4 miles per gallon.

    Supply Activities:

    SM/Sgt. Cook from HQ ADC conducted an Equipment Review and Utilization Survey from 11-13 January 1965.

    A ¾ ton truck, PU, 4 door, 4x4, shipped from Kinchloe AFDB, Michigan, was received on 4 January.

    Action was initiated to delete one truck, cargo, 4x4, and one D-8 tractor from the UAL and EAID records.

    Replacement has been requested for two (2) travelettes. The two on hand will be kept until replacements are received.

    Approximately 80% of the excess caterpillar parts have been pulled from storage bins and packed. Upon completion of this project these items will be turned in to Base Supply at Harmon AFB.

    All excess electronics spares (220 line items) have been turned in to Base Supply at Goose AB.

    A total of 29 flights by the commercial contracted aircraft were completed during this quarter.

    Operations Activities:

    All Operations OOI’s have been reviewed and reaccomplished where necessary.

    A new Radar Quality Control Program was placed in effect which uses dB ratings instead of percentages when determining radar quality.

    GTA-6 ten line units have been installed in Operations which has helped solve some of our communications problems.

    An OA-175 scope was installed on the upper dias for use as Faker Monitor and Hip Pocket duties.

    There were 5 live and 19 synthetic exercises during this period.

    There were a total of 288 live intercepts of which 9 were unsuccessfully positioned, as well as 455 synthetic intercepts.

    Lt. Edney attended an Operations Training Officers Conference at GADS from 25-29 Jan 65.

    A visit was made by Major McClane and M/Sgt. Smelzter of the Southern Complex NCC. Some valuable suggestions were given which shall be initiated immediately.

    Communications and Electronics Activities:

    The AN/GTA-6 telephone system was installed by GEEIA. Installation began on 10 Jan 65 and was completed on 29 Jan 65.

    Two UPA-35 PPI scopes were returned to Canadian Marconi Company for depot overhaul. These scopes have been returned, installed and are operational.

    Two AN/UPX-6 IFF sets were turned into Supply for shipment to depot. These units were replaced by the AN/UPX-14.

    High voltage rubber matting was received and placed in all work centers.

    All test equipment was calibrated during the period 22 Jan to 17 Feb by a calibration team from Canadian Marconi Company.

    The Wire Maintenance Section completely repainted their shop on a self help basis.

    All electronic parts were removed from Unit Supply and set up in the old gym as part of MCC. A room has been constructed to house electronic parts.

    Extreme icing was experienced in January breaking one AS-1097 antenna, the mobile radio antenna, and EPA radio antennas. All antennas were repaired and returned to service.

    Mr. Robert Huckaby, GADS, arrived this station on 15 Feb 65 to perform training and maintenance on AN/GPS-T4. He departed on 25 Feb 65.

    A Quarterly Quality Control inspection was performed in all sections. No major discrepancies were noted.

    TCTO 31P3-2FPS20-589 was completed on both channels of the AN/FPS-20A radar on 25 and 26 March. This modification is to prevent damage to focus coils in the event of a failure in the cooling system.
