    COMMENTARY

    Command Section:

    General Archie M Burke, Commander GADS, visited the site on 26 August 1965.

    Major James J Allen and 1st Lt. Robert C Richards attended the Goose Air Defense Sector Commander’s Conference from 16 to 18 September 1965.

    A GADS Staff Assistance Team with Captain DW McMahon as team chief visited this squadron from 7 to 9 Sep 65. Conduct, appearance, attitude, and Cupertino of all personnel were found to be excellent. Results were satisfactory.

    Administrative/Personnel Section:

    Lt. Robert C Richards was assigned as Personnel/Administrative Officer.

    All eligible personnel were screened under the Human Reliability Program AFM 35-99.

    M/Sgt. Krouse (GADS Administration) conducted a Staff Assistance visit. Results were satisfactory.

    A total of 34 personnel arrived versus 20 departing. Lt. Robert C Richards replaced Lt. Howard C Sumrell as Personnel Officer. Captain Edward R Berg was assigned duties as Operations Officer. M/Sgt. Joseph E Bryan replaced M/Sgt. Alfred M Waddell as First Sergeant.

    Security and Law Enforcement:

    Two expanded Security Exercises were conducted during the quarter.

    Civil Engineering:

    Contracts on Power Plant walls and roofs were completed. Contract to repair the Cargo Pier if 75% complete.

    A Day Room project was designed, and constructed.

    Captain Yeley attended the GADS Facility Utilization Board Meeting on 22 Sep 65. Nine (9) projects were approved for Mobil Maintenance Team construction. Three (3) projects were approved for FY 67 O&M Program. Ten (10) projects were deleted from FY 67 O&M Program.

    All required Preventative Maintenance was accomplished.

    Motor vehicles were driven 7,425 miles, consuming 1,287 gallons of gasoline, and averaging 5.8 miles per gallon.

    Commercial transportation coordination was transferred to the Motor Pool on 1 Aug 65. Newfoundland Air Transport (NAT) began their contract on 1 Jul 65. Many problems existed during the first six weeks of this contract. On 1 Sep 65 MATS Passenger Terminal assumed coordination responsibility and service has improved.

    Personnel Changes – S/Sgt. Tolliver assumed duties as NCOIC of the Motor Pool.

    GADS Staff Assistance Team reviewed operating procedures in Civil Engineering, Motor Pool, and Fire Prevention. Results were satisfactory.

    Supply:

    GADS Staff Assistance Team found all supply activities in satisfactory condition.

    Bench Stock Program was initiated on 5 July 65. It is now 75% completed.

    Quarterly Base Exchange New Sales - $9,975.95.

    Operations:

    Satisfactory Rating was received on the NORAD Operational Evaluation conducted in July 1965.

    Satisfactory rating was received from the GADS Staff Assistance Team.

    There were four (4) live and fifteen (15) simulated missions during this quarter.

    Intercepts – Live 235. Six were unsuccessfully positioned due to director error. Synthetic 294.

    Captain Edward R Berg assumed duties as Operations Officer.

    Communications and Electronics:

    Wire maintenance re-established telephone communication with the commercial switchboard at St. Anthony, Newfoundland.

    The Radome on the AN/FPS-6 tower was re-caulked and re-painted by UNITEC contract technicians.

    The GADS Staff Assistance Team reviewed procedures with this section and also in the Ground Safety Section. Results were satisfactory.

    PEGE Flight Results – (see the matrix at the end of this report)

    S/Sgt. Moss, GADS, arrived on 27 Sep 65 on a Technical Assistance Visit. Sgt. Moss conducted training on the UPX-14. Visit was successful.

    Failures were high; radar malfunctions was the predominate problem.

    August

    One failure – monthly average was passing.

    September

    All flights passed successfully.
