Section II COMMENTARY |

Command: A General Inspection was conducted by the 1st Air Force Inspector General on 2 through 4 May 1966. The overall unit rating was satisfactory. Lt. Col. James J Allen, Commander, departed PCS on 30 June 1966. Captain Nathaniel C Lee Jr., assumed command pending arrival of Lt. Col. Ward L McCombs. Administrative/Personnel: This section received a highly satisfactory General Inspection report. M/Sgt. Herbert W Faucett was assigned as First Sergeant. A total of 16 persons arrived versus 22 departing. All eligible persons screened under the Human Reliability Program. Promotions – The following personnel were promoted to grade indicated: M/Sgt. Richard F Rood, T/Sgt. Robert D Stephens, T/Sgt. Donald L Hazen, T/Sgt. Robert G Schreindl, T/Sgt. Lindo Parks, T/Sgt. UDE Cox, T/Sgt. John E Robinson, T/Sgt. William W Waites, S/Sgt. William L Amsden, S/Sgt. Raymond G Friedl, S/Sgt. Joel C Melton, S/Sgt. James L Celata, A/1C Edward P Plank, A/1C Richard T Tinsman, A/1C Eugene S Derfinyak Jr., A/1C Edward K Raastad, A/1C Edmund J Leonard, A/1C Ernest L Dugger Jr., A/1C Otis T Adams Jr., A/1C Robert D Beatty III, A/1C Paul R Hawks, A/1C Richard L Leider and A/2C Frank Lucereo. Civil Engineering: A contract has been awarded to correct the deficiencies in the multi-purpose building which was constructed under the 1963 Military Construction Program. Contracts were awarded for the following projects – Maintain POL tanks and lines, painting of the exterior of the building, paint NAVAIDS Tower and maintenance of the bowling alley. The Heating and Power Plants were submitted into 1AF competition for these facilities. The Power Plant won 1st place, the Heating plant won 2nd place. Vehicles were driven a total of 9,652 miles using 1,473 gallons of gasoline and averaging 6.55 miles per gallon. Newfoundland Air Transport Limited flew 38 round trips, transporting 43,707 pounds of cargo and 8,296 pounds of mail. On 30 June 1966 NAT contract was terminated. The results of the General Inspection were satisfactory, with an outstanding rating in the Heating and Power Plants. Lt. James E McCarthy replaced Captain Donald L Yeley as station Civil Engineer in June 1966. Supply: The result of this sections General Inspection was satisfactory. Quarterly Base Exchange net sales - $13,769.73. Operations: The result of this sections General Inspection was satisfactory. There were five live and eight simulated exercises during this quarter. Intercepts – Live 150, three of which were unsuccessful due to Director error, and one unsuccessful positioning. Simulated 300. New OOI’s were prepared governing emergency aircraft. There was a complete revision of TESTO. Lt. Andrew K Nelson was assigned in April 1966. Communications and Electronics: A Quality Control and Standardization Inspection was conducted by 37th Air Division. Results were satisfactory. General Inspection results – satisfactory. A Technical Assistance Visit was performed by Canadian Marconi DLM Team on the AN/FPS-6 during April 1966. In May 1966 the CMC DLM Team replaced the azimuth on the AN/FPS-6. The Radar Evaluation Team arrived on station 16 June 1966. The team completed the evaluation on 20 June 1966. A total of 3,007 maintenance documents were processed representing 13,392 units of work.
