1998 - Additional Details - Ren L'Ecuyer

St. Anthony had a population of 1,380 by 1951. The increase in population was due in part to the construction of an American radar station which began construction in 1951 and was completed in 1953. Construction jobs meant good wages which attracted families from settlements along the coast. The base was deactivated in 1971 and disposed of in 1972 to the Crown Assets Disposal Corporation.
