    COMMENTARY

    Operations:

    On 12 March 1964, the 640th NORAD Control Center received an overall rating of satisfactory from the Northern NORAD Region Evaluation of the Goose NORAD Sector. Major Allan McClane assumed the duties of Operations Officer on 15 March 1964 vice Major Loring B Smith. A Goose NORAD Sector Staff Visit was conducted on 26 and 27 March 1964 by Major James A Hillis, Assistant Director of Ground Environment and Anthony R Giannangeli, ECCM Officer.

    Security:

    In January 1964, a Suggestion Evaluation Committee was placed on orders to evaluate the 640th suggestions at this level. The 640th CIG Section coordinated with the Newfoundland License Bureau in order to obtain license for squadron personnel. The NCOIC from this section processed all applications and in-turn processed them through the civilian office in Stephenville, Newfoundland. ADC Forms 186a and 186b have been annotated to show references to the new AFR 205-1. New tests were distributed to all sections for completion. Air Police Training Aids were brought up to date in compliance with the new ECI OJT Program.

    Communications:

    The Communications Center has installed new jack-stripes on the switchboard. This will assist the operator and will cut down on the possibility of accidental disconnects. A current telephone directory for the station has been completed. The SOP’s pertaining to the Communications Center were re-accomplished. All except one phase of the revamping and relocating of equipment has been completed. The final phase will be the installing of the security equipment. The fire alarm control box located in the Communications Center switchboard room has been completed. The Communications Center lost one airman via regular rotation and gained one airman, T/Sgt. Edward C Gagnon.

    Radio Maintenance:

    The Radio Maintenance Section has relocated the AN/GRC-27 from the operations training room to the wire maintenance supply room. The MARS antenna was removed from the roof of "B" barracks. One transmitter was repaired for the AFRS. M/Sgt. Way L Whitaker has assumed the duties as NCOIC of Radio Maintenance. S/Sgt. Paul M Taylor was assigned prime duty as section Training NCO.

    Civil Engineering:

    In addition to the normal station maintenance, the Civil Engineering Section completed the following: Temporary roofing was installed on "A" barracks after a wind storm damaged the roof. All buildings that had individual fire alarm systems are now connected to the annunciator board in the communications center. Electrical wiring of the ARFS radio station has been completed. Motor Pool door that was damaged by a wind storm was repaired. Sections of the condensate return line were replaced in the barracks. Jumpers were replaced in the Power Plant due to a power failure on the TACAN line. Captain James C Ellis assumed duties as Station Civil Engineer vice Captain Horace L Brame.

    Food Service:

    The Dining Hall has eliminated fire hazards which were located in the flower planters. The Dining Hall has received new trays, plates, silverware and glasses. These items are presently being utilized. The Dining Hall has been equipped with speakers to provide station personnel continuous music and news from the 640th AFR Station.

    Unit Supply:

    The Unit Supply Section and Material Control Section were separated in January. S/Sgt. Charles T Truitt has been assigned as the Material Control Section NCO. The Mechanized Bench Stock listing for the Maintenance Complex were received in March. New Bench Stocks are presently being installed in the Maintenance Area.

    Personnel:

    During this reporting period the following personnel were reassigned from this station: Major Loring B Smith to Colorado Springs, Colorado; Captain Frank T Christie to Truax Field, Wisconsin; Captain Horace L Brame to Kingsley Field, Oregon; M/Sgt. John L Dehnart to Brookley AFB, Alabama; T/Sgt. Frederick Beal to Amarillo AFB, Texas; and T/Sgt. Lawrence E Dick to Valley Forge Hospital, PA. The following personnel were assigned to this station: Captain James C Ellis to Civil Engineering Section; 1st Lt. James R Biddle to Operations; M/Sgt. Robert M Hurd to Operations; M/Sgt. Way L Whitaker to Radio Maintenance and T/Sgt. Edward C Gagnon to the Communications Center.

    Awards:

    T/Sgt. Howard M Kaminer of the Food Service Section was awarded the Air Force Commendation medal.

    Promotions:

    Second Lieutenants John M Gilbert and Herbert G Frazier were promoted to First Lieutenants. The following airmen were promoted to Airman First Class: Walter R Reas, Keith Startup, Richard L Steenhock and Walter A Brandenburg.

    Morale:

    The morale of this station is very satisfactory.
