    COMMENTARY

    Operations:

During the period of 4-11 May 1964, the 640th NORAD Control Center participated in the Air Defense Command Operational Readiness Inspection and was awarded an overall rating of satisfactory. On the 12th and 13th of May 64, Desk Top VI was conducted. On 7 May 64, Captain Victor J Carline assumed the duties of Operations Training Officer with the rotation of Captain Lowell D Covington, vice, to the CONUS. An Electric Counter Measure Exercise was conducted with the Royal Canadian Air Force Electronic Warfare Unit from St. Hubert, Quebec on 15-17 June 64. The training received from this exercise was beneficial to all units in the Southern Complex of Goose Sector.

    Communications:

The Communications Sector lost four operators due to normal rotation during this reporting period causing a severe shortage of personnel. To alleviate this problem, two operators have been assigned sixty days temporary duty to the 640th AC&W Squadron from the 641st AC&W Squadron, Melville AFS, Labrador. The Squadron Intercom System has been relocated from the main switchboard and the Fire Alarm Control Box in the Communications Center have been marked with each building number and location. This improvement gives the operator a much more efficient fire reporting system.

    Radio Maintenance:

The AN/TIQ-3 has been relocated and connected through the switchboard to enable all squadron telephones to use the public address system. Technical Order 31-1-213 has been complied with on all racks of equipment. Seven AC lines were relocated to equipment racks and a Ground Safety Board completed in accordance with MOI 32-3. During this reporting period the Radio Maintenance Section lost two personnel and gained one through normal rotation and reassignment. A/2C Nolen has returned for duty in this section from the Maintenance Control Center.

    Unit Supply:

During May 1964, the Communications and Electronics bench stocks were completed. In June 64 Technical Supply was relocated to the Unit Supply building and the outside of the building was painted. S/Sgt. Jones was transferred to the States and A/2C Dinicola was welcomed into the section from the States.

    Food Service:

Items which have been back ordered for several months have begun to be received. A "Clean-up, Paint-up, Fix-up" campaign was started and is still underway.

    Radar Maintenance:

During this reporting period this station radar received a satisfactory rating during the semi-annual Quality Control Inspection conducted by Sector Headquarters. Installation of the AN/GPX-14 has been completed and the Unit put into operation. A pre-DLM inspection for the AN/FPS-20A was conducted. As the equipment was found to be in good condition, the DLM has been postponed until a later date. An LS-124 intercom system was installed in the radar office having slave sites in the FPS-20A and FPS-90 towers. Work is presently underway to reroute the cabling under the operations dias. Most of the radar and communications wiring has been completed.

    Security:

During this reporting period 1st Lt. Wendell W Knudsen was appointed Unit Security Officer, vice Major Allan R McLane. Air Police training phase has been accomplished to date and is being conducted in the prescribed manner. The Motor Pool Section furnished an augmentee to aid the Air Police personnel shortage due to rotation to the CONUS. During this quarter a Small Arms Pistol Match was conducted and the scores forwarded to 26th Air Division. All 640th small arms were cleaned and repaired and gas masks were obtained for the Sabotage Alert Team.

    Civil Engineers:

In addition to normal station maintenance, the Civil Engineering section has completed the following projects: Emergency repairs to Pole Vault building roof was completed. A dam has been constructed at the water supply pond to retard drainage and raise the water level. Oil has been applied to the access road to alleviate some of the dust and mud in the squadron area. Mr. James Darragh has departed the station following the deletion of the Technical Representative position in Civil Engineering at the station.

    Personnel:

During this reporting period, the following personnel were reassigned from this station in addition to those mentioned above: Captain William H Wacheter to the Saratoga AFB, NY; Captain Lowell D Covington to the ROTC Unit at the University of Utah; Sgt. Saunders to Warner Robine AFB, GA and Sgt. Harris to Eglin AFB, Florida. The following additional personnel were assigned to this station: Captain Robert M Hogs, Operations; Lt. Wendell Knudson, Personnel and Administration, T/Sgt. Henaley, Fire Chief, and S/Sgt. Lowry, Personnel Clerk.

    Promotions:
