    COMMENTARY

    Commanders:

    During this reporting period, Major Frederic W Brown departed PCS and Lt. Col. Howard M Namur assumed command on 3 February 1967. Renovation of both the NCO and Airmen barracks was completed. The NCO Club was partially remodelled and is now awaiting enlargement. An increase in Squadron morale was noted.

    Operations:

    During the month of March this section received an excellent rating on the 37th NORAD Air Division Staff Assistance Inspection. During this reporting period, this unit participated in 3 Division SSTMs, 4 Live Region Exercises and 4 Multi-Region SSTMs. Operations gained a new Operations Officer, Captain Joseph V Galloni, and a new NCOIC, CM/Sgt. Harry Geno. Losses were Major Campos, CWO Travsky and Lt. Wilkins. This section gained 21 enlisted personnel and lost 14 due to rotation. During the month of February, A/2C John M Ornce was awarded Airman of the Month.

    Communications and Electronics Maintenance:

    Mr. ED Light, US Civil Service GS-9, was assigned to replace Mr. PM Hiebert, Canadian Marconi, CTSP. Canadian Marconi personnel were on site from 9 January 1967 through 24 February 1967 for the purpose of calibrating all on site test equipment. Canadian Marconi DLM on the Search Radar Channel II was started on 17 January 1967 and completed on 4 March 1967. Canadian Marconi DLM on the height radar was started on 30 January 1967 and completed 29 March 1967. Gains were 1 Officer and 13 Enlisted personnel. Losses were 2 Officers and 13 Enlisted personnel.

    Unit Supply:

    During this quarter one civilian was reassigned to Civil Engineers from Supply. A satisfactory rating was obtained on the Supply Assistance visit from 37th Air Division. A Fuels NCO was designated to handle all fuels and petroleum transactions at the 640th AC&W Squadron and West Bay Site (Navy). The Gap-Pine resupply for FY-67 is 90 percent completed. Unit Supply was completely rewarehoused and all bins were painted. Material Control did not have any NORS for this quarter and was completely rewarehoused and painted.

    Food Service:

    During this period S/Sgt. Glenn Mayfield was assigned to this unit as Food Service Supervisor. Mr. Grane transferred from the BX to Food Service.

    Civil Engineering:

    A mutual aid agreement between the 640th AC&W Squadron fire fighting organization and the Stephenville Fire Department was signed by the Station Commander, Major Frederick W Brown and the Stephenville Mayor Mr. Kevin Walsh on 24 January 1967. SM/Sgt. Lack from the 37th Air Division made a Staff Assistance visit on 21 February for review of the station fire fighting operations and fire prevention procedures. On 14 March Lt. Broussard of the 37th Air Division made a Staff Assistance visit to review the operating procedures and the preventative maintenance program. Canadian Marconi maintenance team completed major overhaul of the power plant diesel engines 2, 4, 5, 6, and 8. Project STE 4-7, "maintain Airmen Dormitories" being accomplished by Pinsent Construction Company is 80 percent complete. Mobile maintenance team completed work order MMT-8-66, repair heating system in various station facilities, on 13 March 1967. Severe wind storm and blowing snow caused heavy drifting that closed the access road on 25 and 26 March.

    Security and Law Enforcement:

    During this period 2 airmen completed their tour of duty and departed the station. S/Sgt. Henry Longworth was assigned to the station 2 March 1967 and assumed duty as section NCOIC. Three airmen were assigned during this period, bringing the total strength to seven. A new Air Police desk was constructed and traffic control lights were installed. A new caution light was constructed to caution drivers proceeding down the hill.
