Section II COMMENTARY |
|||||||
Command: This unit underwent a First Air Force IG Inspection 7-10 July and received an overall rating of satisfactory. Weak areas were personnel and administration. Strong areas were command, housekeeping and operations. S/Sgt. Ival W Roller was assigned to the Personnel Section and an immediate improvement in this area was noted. Lt. Col. Namur and Captain Keefer attended a CCR’s Conference and Dining-In at 37th Air Division, Goose Bay, Labrador. Morale of the unit continued to be extremely high. Operations: The Operations Section received a Satisfactory rating from the 1st Air Force IG Team. No major discrepancies were noted. During this quarter, Operations participated in six live missions and fourteen simulated exercises. Section strength remained constant throughout the quarter. Communications and Electronics: The following are gains and losses for the CEM Section during this reporting period: (see the matrix at the end of this report) GEEIA was here during this reporting period and completed four schemes concerning the rehabilitation of our Outside Plant and the replacement of various and sundry communications cables. Canadian Marconi was here from 14 July to 5 August and calibrated all of the on-site test equipment. All off base communications circuits were transferred from the Pole Vault System to a commercial system during this quarter. Due to this transfer a TACAN monitor was placed in MCC to insure TACAN outages would be quickly noticed. Unit Supply: During this reporting period Goose Air Base has gone into the UNIVAC 1050-11. New custodian receipts were sent to all concerned. Lt. Young and Mr. Gabriel attended the station support officer’s conference at Goose AB. Civil Engineering: The annual resupply of diesel fuel was accomplished with the intake of 20,000 barrels on 25 July. The transfer of fuel from the dockside tank to the upper storage area was completed by 15 September. The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, acting under authority granted them by USAF, erected a new TV transmitting tower on site. Canadian Marconi personnel completed the electrical overhaul of the switchboard and the alternators at the Power Plant on 26 September. Recreation Services: Intramural basketball and badminton were initiated during this period. The squadron softball team participated in the 37th Air Division Tournament at Goose Bay and were blanked 8-0 by tournament champions Sondestrom. The 641st AC&W Squadron put the locals out of the tournament by defeating them 6-2. A successful salmon season was culminated in early August when one party from the site landed over thirty salmon in the upper stretches of Flat Bay River. |
