Commanders:

The squadron participated in the Grand Opening of the NCO Club Sun Porch. Colonel James A and Mrs. Darby, Lt. Colonel Robert and Mrs. Lerner were the honored guests, with Mrs. Darby doing the ribbon cutting. The 640^th won 2^nd place in Overseas Fire Prevention. The Squadron Power Plant was chosen as the outstanding plant in the Aerospace Defense Command.

Operations:

The Operations Section participated in 10 live or simulated missions. Four of these exercises were NORAD wide. One was regional and five were conducted on a divisional scale. An almost complete change over of personnel in the Operations Section was accomplished with Lt. Osborne replacing Lt. Miller as Operations Officer.

CEM Maintenance:

The 37^th Air Division Chief of Maintenance conducted a Staff Assistance Visit of the CEM Maintenance and Materiel Control functions during the period 3 to 5 November 1969. Key personnel changes within the Maintenance complex were SM/Sgt. Grady Watford to Maintenance Quality Control Inspector. SM/Sgt. James Hibbard to Radar Maintenance Superintendent. M/Sgt. Dean Faircloth to NCOIC Maintenance Control Center. T/Sgt. Morris Barbee to Training Coordinator.

Station Support:

During the quarter there were 5,926 pounds of mail received and 2,246 pounds of mail was hauled by contract aircraft. There were 58,435 pounds of cargo received by the Support Section and 16,509 pounds was shipped to Goose AB. The contract aircraft carried 117 passengers to the 640^th and 141 passengers were flown to Goose Bay. T/Sgt. Sterkenburg, NCOIC Supply, was chosen for this Quarter’s NCO, by a board of 640^th Officers.

Civil Engineering:

Captain Robert Kroener, Civil Engineer, departed this station 6 October 1969. His replacement, Captain Jerry B Sheets arrived 5 October 1969. The 8^th Air Force Mobile Maintenance Team constructed an addition to the Motor Pool for the purpose of housing the station fire truck. New locks were installed on bed room doors in both "A" and "B" dormitories. Incandescent light fixtures were replaced in the Post Office with new fluorescent lights to provide better lighting conditions. The number eight Cummins generator was removed from the Power Plant and replaced by a serviceable one from Saglek. Main bearings were installed in burner unit, on Number One Boiler in the Heating Plant. A sand spreader was designed and fabricated by Motor Pool personnel and has proven to be very efficient.

Recreational Services:

During the past quarter, October, November and December, the Special Services Program has slowed down with the change in weather but the Hobby Shop Program is gradually increasing. The quarter started with a double elimination table tennis tournament with twelve participants and M/Sgt. Glenn Cornett coming out on top. Basketball which is usually very keen at this time of year has not produced the same caliber of talent compared with the past few years. The Annual Invitational Tournament at St. John’s was cancelled and 37^th AD does not intend to have a tournament this year. Four games have been played against local competition with the 640^th winning two and losing two games. The Big Game Hunting Season, open during this quarter, has seen several of the 640^th personnel being successful. The Bowling League is very competitive with six teams participating and an All Star Team was selected to compete in a sixteen team Stephenville Town League with 640^th enjoying 1^st place after twelve weeks. Five 640^th Dart Teams are competing in a twelve team District League with one team just three points out of 1^st place after seven weeks of play. The 640^th Squadron League has four teams and league play will begin the 1^st week of January. The Hobby Shops, which were rather quiet during the previous quarter has increased participation gradually, with the all purpose hobby shop and the Electronics Hobby Shop getting the most usage. The Leather Craft Shop has a steady usage throughout the quarter with no significant increase as yet. The Fly-tying Shop has not started yet and usually begins in February. We are looking forward to increased usage of all Hobby Shops during the winter months.
