Four-Team Hockey Loop Operating at Stephenville
A four-team senior hockey league, operating under the auspices of the Spartans Sport Club, got underway in Stephenville this week on White’s outdoor rink with the RCMP, bolstered by local players, whipping a team from Pinetree Air Station 11-1.
The other teams in the loop are the Stephenville Rockets and Trojans. They will face-off tonight, weather permitting, at 10 o’clock. Games are played on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday nights with the Tuesday and Friday games commencing at 8 o’clock.
On Sunday it is hoped to have an all start team meet the visiting teams from St. George’s and Corner Brook. The rink was built this fall by Cliff White and measures 180 feet by 75 feet.
AC&W Hockey Team Cuts Ice at Goose Festival
The 640th Aircraft Control and Warning Squadron hockey team, representing Harmon AFB, will be given its first test tomorrow when it skates in the Goose AB Winter Carnival. Thirteen sets of pads and uniforms were recently procured from a Royal Canadian Air Force station at Sydney, Nova Scotia, to finish outfitting the AC&W squad.
Coach Dick Ahlgren and his team have been practicing "on the hill" at the AC&W site here, base rink and at the Aguathuna rink. Hockey sticks and pucks were available before the squad received its pads and uniforms.
Harmon received its invitation to compete in the Goose Festival last week. Other teams invited to skate in the event are the United States and Canadian teams from Goose Bay and Gander. The round robin tournament is scheduled to begin tomorrow and last three days.
Coach Ahlgren also announced that the 640th AC&W team is looking for games in this area with a possibility of meeting Corner Brook Royals of the Newfoundland Amateur Hockey Association or one of the four teams in the Corner Brook Town League. Harmonites interested in becoming members of the team can contact Coach Ahlgren at extension 25 during duty hours or his home phone, Stephenville 3-4495.
