590 RCAC Mira Road Squadron attended a Station tour consisting of a morning of sports in the Rec. Centre – volleyball and swimming, ate dinner in the Airmen’s Mess then toured the Ground Environment. 55 Cadets attended.

S/L Hubbard and F/L Gauthier arrived 1900 hours to give a briefing on Golden Centennaires performance at Glace Bay on 21 Jul 67. Meeting was held in the Officers Mess attended by CO, CAdO, SAO, Centennial Committee Chairman, Sandy Reeves, Centennial Committee Programme Chairman, Peter McCarthy, 103 Cabot Wing RCAFA Members, Joseph Hureau, Norman McPhee, Harry Reid, Percy McMullin, William Sampson, W D’Orsay and John NacNeil and programme for the RCAFA Sponsorship was presented.

CAdO, F/L Peters resumed duties on return from annual leave. Golden Centennaires team departed. Unit advised of Gov. General Vanier’s death on 6 March, flags lowered half mast.

Unit advised to observe service mourning until 1200 hours 13 Mar. Marcom Centennial Rep. S/L Madill and Maj. Halliwell visited unit to conduct Centennial Programming.

Unit advised that servicemen and civil servants may observe a one half day off to attend ceremonies in remembrance of the Governor General. CO and 31 men attended an interfaith religious service at Sydney Academy.

Station Sydney’s first Winter Carnival was commenced this date with intermess servicemen and ladies taking part. Competitions being held are in swooshing, snowshoeing, toboggan pull, tug-o-war, broomball, curling, volleyball, badminton, bowling, rifle shooting, curling and darts. Snowstorm struck unit that continued through to 14 Mar plugging access road to the Unit. Roads were cleared on 14 Mar.

S/L JE Norenius and F/L D Palmer, ADC Management Team arrived 1945 hours on visit to unit for discussions with CO on management returns and to give briefing on ADC management requirements.

Snowstorm commencing late evening of 17 Mar completely paralysed all road traffic in the area. Unit blocked until back road access was cleared at 1930 hours, all MSE section operating. Canadair Variety Show group arrived at the Airport 1530 hours but could not be brought on the Unit until 2045 hrs. The Winter Carnival was decided by judging of the snow sculptures by the Messes and the results added to the point score for the week’s competitions. Off/Sgts Mess tied Admin/Ops Cpls/Airmen Club team in sports competition but judging of the snow sculptures decided Sgt/Off Mess as the winners of the 1967 Carnival. A show and dance were held in the Recreation Centre attended by all personnel who could walk to the Unit function. The various Messes had elected a carnival princess, Mrs. Peters, Mrs. Ferguson, and Miss Richards, to represent them during the Carnival. The Princess of the Off/Sgts Mess, Mrs. C Peters, was crowned Queen of the Carnival. Canadair Variety Show group presented a tremendous variety show following presentation of prizes for carnival competitions which was thoroughly enjoyed by all attending. The Variety Show Band then played for the dance which followed the show.

Variety Show group left Unit for return to Cartierville via service aircraft at 1130 hours. Protestant Chapel services were held at Station Theatre, necessitated by failure of heating components in the Chapels. RC Services were cancelled.

A drowning occurred in the Unit swimming pool approximately 1615 hours. three children crawled under a door into the pool which was locked and not lifeguarded or supervised. Master K MacDonald, dependent son of Sgt. WP MacDonald was the victim.

CO, CAdO, SLogO, attended 562 Squadron (RCAC) North Sydney review ceremony.

F/L Hunter, F/L Hamstead, and Mr. Hopper, ADCHQ SOCE Staff, arrived to conduct an air sample test at this unit. A 15-man group of Unit personnel commenced upon a 100-mile walk as one of this Unit’s Centennial Projects. Walkers will proceed via route 5 from Canso Causeway to Sydney, camping overnight enroute. A support party of five attended driving escort vehicles and preparing campsites and meals. Walkers proceeded to within 6 miles of Baddeck.

PO Dunham, Mr. Teepell, Reg Surg Disinfestation team arrived to conduct cockroach disinfestations of the Unit. Centennial Walkers passed the 51 mile mark at 0930 hours this date. Two walkers have blisters and were forced to give up.

Centennial Walkers passed the 76 mile mark at 0830 hours this date. All walkers have blisters but are still walking.

Dr Heckman, Captain HNMS Van Galen paid his complimentary call on CO. F/L Peters, CAdO, attended the Captain’s luncheon as the CO’s representative. F/L Peters, Rogers, Black and Monaghan, with wives, attended an evening reception aboard the Van Galen.

Seamen from Dutch Frigate Van Galen played an exhibition soccer game with a station team gathered for this match. Van Galen won 3–2.

Lt./Col. John M Kinnaird, Dept Comd & Sr. Exec N.S. District Canadian Corps Commissionaires accompanied by Lt H Forbes Trasher, Admin O. paid a courtesy visit to the Unit.

W/C Cameron, 36 NDS, arrived on staff visit. W/C PB St Louis, CO, EWU, and F/L Chictra Aircraft Navigator, paid a swift visit to the Unit for lunch.

The RN "Torquay" visited Sydney.

A CHS52, Sea King Helicopter from HS50 Squadron Shearwater arrived at 1040 hours for AFD static and active demonstrations manned by S/Lt Grant Smith, S/Lt C Dolley, LSRN R MacKinnon, LS Bryan, PO1 Serafinchin and LS Crossman. 1967 Armed Forces Day – Sydney was held at this Unit. Naval participation was provided from VS880 Squadron by a flypast of Tracker Aircraft, HS50 Squadron by provision of a CHS52 Sea King Helicopter, Sydney Sear Cadet Corps by provision of a static and active marching display, Army display was given by 2nd Bat NSHR(M) by provision of static weapons display and an active tactics display and an active field medical Unit and static equipment display by 6 Med Coy (M). Outside Air Force displays were provided by 562 Squadron RCAC by provision of a marching band, and 45 Squadron RCAC by provision of a precision drill squad. A closed house day was held, admission by invitation to maintain control. 750 invitations were sent. 341 outside spectators attended. Activities commenced at 1300 hours, opening static displays for viewing. Displays were centred in the Rec. Centre; MSE, MIR, Chapels and Fire Hall were open for inspection and tours were conducted through areas of the Radar Environment. 231 people toured the radar area. Active displays were scheduled to be held in the ball field area and commenced at 1420 hours and terminated at 1610 hours. The static display program was a flypast of four trackers in various formations at varying speeds, a naval cadet drill demonstration, an air cadet band demonstration, an air cadet precision drill demonstration, an army tactics demonstration culminated with a medical field evacuation of a casualty who was air evacuated by navy helicopter, terminated by an air demonstration by the naval helicopter. AFD was terminated at 1800 hours. Captain C Vance and Lt. G Messer of the Armed Forces Mobile Static Display team arrived. Team of 26 personnel will be quartered here for the period of their stay in Cape Breton.

F/O Donovan, Atlantic SIU, arrived to conduct a security clearance on an officer. Sydney JCofC and JCettes attended the Unit on a PR visit at CO’s invitation Dinner for 15 JCs was held in the Officers’ Mess followed by a tour of the GE terminated by a meeting held in the Officers’ Mess.

The Golden Centennaires Aerobatic Team arrived at 1430 hours and were met by the CO and SAO plus radio and TV media. A press/public relations reception was held at the Officers’ Mess to enable key citizens to meet the members of the team. 27 guests attended the reception, plus 5 unit officers and 14 Centennaires.

Graduation ceremonies for primary students and presentation of academic awards to Queens School Students was held in the station theatre at 1330 hours. Golden Centennaires performance, scheduled for 1930 hours was advanced to 1800 hours. A limited "flat" show was presented but interrupted by aircraft recall when weather conditions deteriorated.

A 210-man naval drill and band contingent arrived to remain at the unit for 5 days during which they will present the naval Ceremony of the Flags in the Sydney area. O/C the flag group Lt. J Williamson and O/C band CmdO J Collins. F/L KA Peters assumed command effective 0000 hours on absence of W/C Wright on TD to Kingston. WO1 Campbell, CFHQ, and WO2 Lohnes, 1 RCEO, visited to inspect the Power Plant, especially the generators in the plant.

Muster parade held to deliver lecture on wood safety and fire prevention. Commanding Officer hosted a United Appeal canvas organizers’ meeting in the Officers’ Mess in his capacity as vice chairman or Cape Breton County United Appeal Organization. ESF exercise against a civilian demonstration was held 2300 hours lasting for an hour coincident with simulated input exercise Famous Brave 4.

Sydney Kiwanis visited the unit on a Kiwanis Kid’s Day visit. Forty children and five Kiwanis attended movies in the theatre, light lunch in the miss, a conducted tour of radar environment, and a swim, then departed the unit.

Motorcycle Display Team arrived to utilize R&Q while staging performances in Glace Bay and Sydney. Forty-nine personnel accommodated. Team commanded by Captain J Burman assisted by Lt. P Kerwin. All barrack space utilized.
