1962 - Buildings are Dismantled - Ken Gibson

(January 1962)

There was just one single radar dome at Tofino. Apparently, this dome was unable to withstand the strong west coast winds - so a protective wind screen was constructed. Eight cedar poles, 1.5 feet in diameter and 75 feet in height were strategically positioned and cemented into the rock. A wind screen was then added, thereby providing protection to the radome. The radar station was closed in December 1957 and the contents of the operational buildings were gutted after the station was closed. The shell of the buildings were not dismantled until January 1962.
