STATEMENT BY AIR FORCE HEADQUARTERS

RELEASE NO. 8860
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

The RCAF’s radar station at Tofino, BC, on the west coast of Vancouver Island, is to be disbanded, and all personnel will be withdrawn by the end of January, 1958.

The radar station at Tofino was formed as a portion of the joint Canada/United States Pinetree chain to provide supplementary radar cover at a time when the reliability of radar equipment had not reached its present state. In the intervening years, improvements in maintenance techniques and equipment have been such that other stations in the area are able to provide necessary coverage. Therefore, the need for Tofino as a backup has disappeared. As a consequence, it is now possible for the operations at Tofino to be discontinued and this is being done in consultation with the USAF.
