AC&W STATIONS - CLOSING OF TOFINO
Introduction
Because of rapid developments in new radars, procurement of the radar search sets originally planned for the limited GCI’s at Comox and Tofino was cancelled, and as an interim measure these stations are using obsolescent AN/CPS-5 search radar sets on loan from the USAF.
Recent studies have indicated that there is sufficient coverage from Holberg and Neah Bay radars to meet operational requirements, in the Western Vancouver Island area without the limited coverage provided by Tofino. There will be a further improvement in this coverage when improved radars are installed at Holberg and Neah Bay.
ADC RCAF and CONAD have agreed that Tofino can be closed, and staff action is under way at this HQ to initiate formal action to this effect through government channels in accordance with the Pinetree Agreement.
Recommendation
It is recommended that the 59-62 programme of activities continue to indicate that the limited GCI station at Tofino will be closed, probably early in 1958.
