  2. During the period of this report the 916th Squadron is operationally responsible to the Grand Forks Air Defense Sector (SAGE) and the 29th Air Division (SAGE). It is logistically responsible to Detachment #1, Ottawa, Ontario, Canada.

  • The 916th AC&W Squadron will operate and maintain a radar and communications facility as a Manual Air Defense Direction Center for the Air Defense of the North American Continent. Authority: GFADS Regulation 24-2.

    COMMENTARY

     

    Administration:

    The activities in the orderly room during this period remained normal, however, there was almost a complete changeover of personnel. 1st Lt. Anthony E Vaden replaced 1st Lt. Robert A Smith as Administrative Officer. S/Sgt. Thomas J Pfeifer replaced T/Sgt. Willie Holmes as Chief Clerk. S/Sgt. Ronald E Johnson replaced S/Sgt. Merle E Marmet as Personnel Specialist and A/2C John D Ross replaced A/2C Tommy Sisson as Mail and Distribution Clerk. A new Protestant Auxiliary Chaplain, Reverence EP Henningsen, was appointed in June to replace Reverend Kratofil, who accepted another position in another locale.

    No administrative or personnel staff visits were conducted during this period.

    It is noted that the overall strength of the unit is increasing.

    Medical:

    During this period the squadron was visited by General Strickland, ADC Surgeon, and his staff. Also a visit by the Division Surgeon from Grand Forks Air Base, ND.

    There was no change in medical personnel during this period.

    The Dental Team was here for one (1) month assisting both military personnel and dependants.

    Communications and Electronics:

    During this period the C&E section completed installation of two (2) AN/UPS-35 and one (1) 0A-175 Plan Position Indicators. Also the section completed installation of 27 T-277A/GTA 10 line key units.

    Morale:

    The morale at this squadron remains high. All personnel are enjoying the fishing season which opened 15 May 1960.

    Community Relations:

    On the 21st May 1960, the squadron held an Armed Forces Day Open House. This revealed to the civilians what our job is and what we are doing here. Approximately 200 people attended during the day.
