Operations Daily Diary

1 Aug 55

At 0800 hours this unit shut down operations for approximately ten days while the yearly maintenance of the radar equipment was carried out. It is expected that operations will commence around the 10 Aug 55.

The Senior Controller, F/L TE Wallis, commenced fourteen days leave this date. F/L WD Hill will take over as Senior Controller during his absence. Also on leave are F/O HC Burrill, F/O JH Maxwell and F/O HG Andrews.

Personnel on TD are: F/O WG Standing, who has departed for two weeks at 766 AC&W Squadron, Limestone, Maine. F/O DM Wach for one week at 21 AC&W Squadron, Sydney and LAC RD Bayne who is in Station St. Hubert to attend a one week Basketball instructors course.

10 Aug 55

At 0018 hours, this unit commenced operating on an Operations GCI Status after being shut down for ten days during annual maintenance. F/O DM Wach returned from 10 days TD at Sydney. There were 137 tracks detected in our area with nil unknowns. A total of 340 flight plans were received and the quality control was 99.7% on 17 tracks.

11 Aug 55

There were 128 tracks detected in our area with 3 unknowns. A total of 268 flight plans were received, and there were 13 successful synthetic intercepts. The quality control was 103% on 13 tracks.

12 Aug 55

There were 50 tracks detected in our area with 4 unknowns. A total of 255 flight plans were received, and the quality control was 98.2% on 8 tracks.

13 Aug 55

F/O WG Standing returned from two weeks TD at Limestone, Maine. There were 51 tracks detected in our area with 4 unknowns. A total of 229 flight plans were received and the quality control was 107.2% on 14 tracks.

14 Aug 55

There were 74 tracks detected in our area with 1 unknown. A total of 238 flight plans were received, and the quality control was 104.8% on 13 tracks.

15 Aug 55

F/L TE Wallis returned from two weeks annual leave and assumes his regular position as Senior Controller. Also back from leave is F/O HC Burrill. F/O RL Holland departed for one week TD at Sydney. Purpose of the visit is Cross Training and to assist that unit during a shortage of controllers. There were 99 tracks detected in our area with 4 unknowns. A total of 283 flight plans were received, and the quality control was 102% on 14 tracks.

16 Aug 55

There were 109 tracks detected in our area with 4 unknowns. A total of 310 flight plans were received. The quality control was 98.8% on 11 tracks.

17 Aug 55

There were 108 tracks detected in our area with 7 unknowns. A total of 297 flight plans were received, and the quality control was 95.5% on 9 tracks.

18 Aug 55

There were 79 tracks detected in our area with 5 unknowns. A total of 250 flight plans were received, and the quality control was 91% on 7 tracks.

19 Aug 55

There were 58 tracks detected in our area with 14 unknowns. A total of 266 flight plans were received, and there were 7 successful synthetic intercepts. The quality control was 99% on 3 tracks.

20 Aug 55

On this date 2/Lt. FB Moore, T/Sgt. WV Porter, T/Sgt. WG Mallinix, S/Sgt. HC Moody arrived this unit on one week TD. Purpose of this visit was Cross Training. There were 89 tracks detected in our area with 7 unknowns. A total of 236 flight plans were received. The quality control was 106% on 8 tracks.

21 Aug 55

LAC CAP MacKenzie was elected to attend the CNE at Toronto as the representative of this unit. There were 98 tracks detected in our area with 3 unknowns. A total of 258 flight plans were received, and the quality control was 98% on 15 tracks.

22 Aug 55

Effective this date F/O JA Quarnstrom replaced F/O CM Robinson as Surveillance Officer. F/O DM Wach replaces F/O Quarnstrom as i/c Crew #3 and F/O Robinson becomes spare Controller. F/O Robinson commenced seven days annual leave this date. There were 90 tracks detected in our area with nil unknowns. A total of 284 flight plans were received, and 1 emergency assistance case was carried out. The quality control was 103% on 15 tracks.

23 Aug 55

Synthetic Exercise as per attached Ops Order 16/55 was carried out this date. There were 77 tracks detected in our area with 5 unknowns. A total of 300 flight plans were received, and the quality control was 98% on 12 tracks.

24 Aug 55

On this date there was a re-run of Synthetic Exercise (Ops Order 16/55) part 1. There were 104 tracks detected in our area with 2 unknowns. A total of 324 flight plans were received, and the quality control was 97% on 10 tracks.

25 Aug 55

There were 101 tracks detected in our area with 3 unknowns. A total of 329 flight plans were received. There were 3 flights under Surveillance. The quality control was 99% on 11 tracks.

26 Aug 55

There were 75 tracks detected in our area with 7 unknowns. A total of 373 flight plans were received and the quality control was 105% on 10 tracks.

F/O LD Roche proceeded on one weeks TD to ADCHQ and 11 AC&W Squadron. F/O Robinson has taken over Crew #4 in absence of F/O Roche. There were 84 tracks detected in our area with 7 unknowns. A total of 357 flight plans were received, and the quality control was 110.5% on 10 tracks.
