Bronze Medallion Course for swimmers was held for one week.

Security lecture and a film on espionage given to all members of the Operations Building staff. Children’s summer school for dependants from ages 4 to 16 years successfully completed first month’s operation. Activities included crafts, arts, drama, hobbies, sports and special events. One adult supervisor and four teenage leaders conducted this school. A girl’s softball team was entered in Halifax Ladies League with Naval Supply Deport, Maritime Tel & Tel and Beechville. A golf tournament was held at Greenwood and five golfers from Station Beaverbank took part.

S/L MCP MacIntosh, Padre (P), from Station Greenwood spending next four Sundays and Mondays on TD this unit replacing Padre Blanchard who is on vacation.

Girl’s softball team entered in finals of Halifax City League, placed second. Large attendance was reported both in Beaverbank and Halifax.

A Dependant’s Swim Meet was held in Halifax. Station Beaverbank was well represented and placed first in competition with St. Mary’s Recreation Club. On 22 Aug, the Meet was held at Station Beaverbank.

12 Aug 59

Sgt. AJ Neumann, MACHQ (MIR), conducted a sanitation inspection.

15 Aug 59

Men’s Station Softball team entered the Nova Scotia semi-finals - won first game. Exhibition games were held with Halifax and Dartmouth Intermediate teams.

W/C NJ Gallagher, ADCHQ Padre (RC), visited station.

Mr. J Glass, CPO St. Margaret’s, on TD at this unit.

Arrangements were made by F/L Chipman (CAdO) for two bus loads of children, accompanied by supervisors, to visit HMCS Bonaventure.

A conference was held at Station Headquarters to discuss future defence procedure in regard to vulnerability tests. LAC ED Chapman, Radar Tech G (3), transferred to College Militaire Royal de Saint Jean, PQ, to be promoted to F/C.

F/L PG Chipman, FS A Pettipas and Sgt. AD LaDuke proceeded on TD to St. Hubert to attend a nine-day course on Nuclear Defense.

Deputy Minister’s Audit team arrived to conduct an annual audit inspection of all station accounting. Mr. DE Crawley of CGE Toronto, came to the radar section this date. The remainder of the CGE overhaul party are expected tomorrow morning. A conference of #2 Sector, Operations and Telecommunications personnel with respect to general problems began at this unit and ended 16 Jun 59.

Messrs. D Martin, G Reddy, M Morin, JT Zentner, D Calder, JA Davey, HJ Simon, Apearse and G Cousins of CGE Toronto, arrived this date to begin overhaul of prime radar. F/O Smalley, SOMSE ADC, visited the MSE section.

Mr. EA Boys, Mr. R Charest and Mr. C Dagenais visited the unit with respect to Radar Improvement Programme (RIP) and departed same date.

Conversion to one floor operation began this date with WO1 Liddle as project officer with the radar section supplying the majority of working personnel.

Mr. RP Smith of RCA Montreal, arrived at the radar section this date on a pre-inspection of secondary radars due for overhaul and peaking in the early part of Aug. ADC Supply inspection team arrived at this unit. This inspection team consisted of S/L RA Trottier and FS C Lecroix.

Mr. DA Cameron, AMCHQ STelO Branch, arrived for two day inspection of one floor plan.

RCA overhaul team arrived at the radar section for peaking of secondary radar equipment. The team consisted of RW Moesseau, team leader, HR Standing, TA Davidson, FE Gibson, B MacDonald, JD Richardson, RE Glover, JM Oliver, AW Leadbetter, GD LaPlante and MR Burrell.

Mr. L Aikenhead and Mr. M Amies from CAE arrived at site to prepare for painting of radomes.

CEO, F/O GJ Bordeleau hospitalized and expected to be absent for three months.

Section IV – Senior Controller

The following is an outline of the activities of the Senior Controller section for this period.

1 Jun 59

Request from Sector regarding an AEW sighting of buoys 200 nm south of Halifax. Investigation proved MAC had a P2V dropping smoke flares in that area. One unknown track carried for four minutes - then re-identified as friendly.

2 Jun 59

IFF interference between 090-100M. Source not established. One unknown track carried. 6 practice intercepts with CF-100’s.

3 Jun 59

Four Banshees scrambled and handed over to Pepper control. Synthetic "Signpost" carried out.

4 Jun 59

RCC dispatched a helicopter to investigate firing of flares 2 nm west of this site. Proved to be a disposal party destroying surplus equipment. One T-33 committed against an unknown track. Intercept unsuccessful because of evasive action. Unknown track later identified friendly as F-89J out of Otis AFB. Speedbird 509 carried unknown for 15 minutes - no flight plan. MTI was U/S for 6 hours.

Two CF-100’s scrambled from Chatham on unknown track which proved to be a pair of Banshees. Redtape was placed on a one-hour alert re "Fast Move". During the exercise 28 tracks were detected giving ECM 1-4 and also on "X" band. Random chaff drops also experienced. Nine intercepts were completed by Banshees during the exercise.

The following is an outline of the activities of the Security Section for the period.

Damage - 0815 hours. Mr. C Armour, foreman for Annapolis Valley Construction, reported that children had thrown stones through the plastic covering the windows.

2 Jun 59

Rec. Hall - On authority of F/L Chipman, the inner door leading into the Rec. Hall basement will be secured on Friday and Saturday after closing hours. This will eliminate children from playing in the basement prior to Fire Picquet arrival.

4 Jun 59

Accident - Cpl. Henning reported that a young child from PMQ’s fell into a puddle of water adjacent to the new school nearly drowning. The water puddle was 3 feet in depth. Construction foreman was informed and water hole drained.
Insecure - 2330 hours. Main door into C&E building was found open. Secured by AFP and CEO informed the following day.

Fire - Cpl. Collins, FF, reported that a fire had occurred near the basement entrance to the Rec. Hall. AFP investigated. Memo submitted to CAdO.

Discipline - 2150 hours. AFP were informed that a dog owned by Cpl. Arsenault had bitten two children in the PMQ area. Action taken in accordance with Appendix J to Station Standing Orders.

Parking - Numerous complaints from Mr. George Ward, initiated parking tickets issued to personnel parking their PMC’s near the fire escapes and garbage pickup. Mr. Ward was unable to pick up garbage.
Alert - 0930 hours. Alert sounded AFP to secure Operations building and main gate until informed that the Alert was Operational.

Lost - F/L Fisher reported the loss of his wallet containing I Card and personal papers. Later recovered - found in F/L Fishers PMC.

Security - 1445 hours. Two civilians, F Brunner and F Kolowart employed for the Atlantic Pacific Publications Limited Toronto, apprehended trespassing on DND property. Both arrested and appeared before Magistrate Inglis, for the County Court of Halifax. Fined $15.50 cost.

17 Jun 59

Loss - Cpl. J Alain reported the loss of keys which are used in the Coke machine. Later found in the warehouse store room. Keys were not compromised.

20 Jun 59

Impaired Driving - 1030 hours. Sgt. Todd appeared before Magistrate Inglis for the County Court of Halifax. Pleaded guilty on the charge of impaired driving and fined $50.00 and costs. His driving privileges suspended for a period of one year.

22 Jun 59

Theft - 0800 hours. FS Desjardins reported the theft of a nylon parka from the hall closet of his PMQ 24. This occurred between 0900 and 1230 hours, 20 Jun 59. Still under investigation.
Theft - 1245 hours. Mrs. Jerry Alain employed in the snack bar, reported the theft of her wallet containing $40.00. An initial investigation revealed that the Bread Delivery Man, Mr. R Baker, employed for Moirs Bakery could be the culprit. RCMP informed. Still under investigation.

Security - The lecture Espionage scheduled for presentation was cancelled as the Operations Building personnel are employed in yearly maintenance requirements.

Rec. Hall - 0800 hours. C&E informed that persons had put putty in the locks of the main door to the Rec. Hall. Cleared.

Discipline - 1500 hours. Mr. Ross canvassing PMQ’s for Kings Dry Goods reported that some child had stolen the ignition keys from his truck. Investigation revealed that Master G Reeves was the culprit. Keys returned.

Security - 0155 hours. A check of the Operations Building revealed that the wire door on the fire escape which leads to the Operations roof was open. F/O Moody, Operations Security Officer informed.

Theft - 0730 hours. Sgt. Munson reported the theft of a can of Naptha gas from his front steps PMQ 22. Investigations revealed that Dougie Alain, son of Cpl. Alain had removed the can. The empty can was found in Cpl. Alain’s garbage can.

Security - 0900 hours. The rear fire escape door in the Rec. Hall adjacent to the swimming pool repaired.

6 Jul 59

2405 Auxiliary - 1000 hours. 2405 Auxiliary personnel arrived by Bus from Halifax. Escorted to the Airmen’s Canteen where they were briefed by F/L Chipman and TOS.

7 Jul 59

Loss - 0845 hours. F/L Laird reported the theft of one Red issue blanket from the Officers Mess. Blanket recovered in the Fire Hose shack, by the Operations Building Pump House.
Search - 1600 hours. A search of all PMC’s service and civilian leaving the unit via the main gate and the construction road. All in order.

8 Jul 59

Discipline - 0845 hours. FS Desjardins informed the writer that three pairs of coveralls were to be demanded and held on inventory at the guard room - to be used by defaulters. Instructions of the Commanding Officer. E42 submitted.

9 Jul 59

AWA - 1300 hours. A memorandum received from S/L Reid to the effect that 134176 LAC Ruben Frank Boyer was AWA effective 1630 hours, 5 Jul 59. An investigation initiated in accordance with AFAO 21.43.01.

10 Jul 59

Telephone Directories - Maritime Tel & Tel arrived at the guard room with 77 new phone directories to be distributed to all sections. Taken to the Comm Section.
Security Operations Building - 0430 hours. Entrance gained to the Operations Building via the ground floor fire escape door situated behind the Tote Board with the use of a coat hangar. A work order submitted to the CE to have a shield placed over the latch.

12 Jul 59

Illegal Entrance - 1030 hours. Master Douglas Steele, dependant son of LAC Steele, escorted to the guard room. Chris Reeves age four and Mark Reeves age 3, both dependants of 244178 LAC LJ Reeves, PMQ 47. Both boys found in the snack bar and possessed six packages of gum. Illegal entrance gained via the aperture in the screen window.

13 Jul 59

Security - 2320 hours. Kitchen door leading inside the hospital found unlocked. Building checked. NS informed and door secured.

14 Jul 59

Inspection - 0815 hours. F/L Chipman arrived at the guard room for weekly inspection of the guard room, registers etc.

15 Jul 59

Trespassing - 2035 hours. Mr. Carbonneau, plumber for the DND, informed AFP that three men had entered the unit via the construction road, at 2000 hours. Mr. C Hebert, C Lovette and L Morash apprehended in the Canteen. Turned over to the RCMP. Appeared in the County Court on 16 Jul and charged with part IV of the Trespass Regulations and fined $19.00 each.

Recovered - Record player and records found hidden under the basement steps of the Rec. Hall. Property of DND school - returned.

Alert Posters - Alert posters distributed to all sections, barracks and PMQ’s.

Discipline - 0310 hours. LAC Klynych nude from the waist up and LAC Ing dressed in civilian clothing attempted to gain access to the Operations Building. The Commissionaire informed the Duty Controller. Both airmen left before the Duty Controller could talk to the above. AFP apprehended both men and escorted them to their barracks.
Security Check - 2200 hours. A security check of the Operations building carried out, the writer assisting F/L Chipman.

20 Jul 59

Discipline - 1745 hours. Orderly Officer informed AFP that 133084 LAC J Mair was in close custody in Halifax City Jail for impaired driving. Permission received from the City Police and LAC Mair taken into Air Force custody. On the 21 Jul 59 LAC Mair appeared in court pleaded not guilty and a hearing set for 12 Aug 59.
Transfer In - 0800 hours. Cpl. CM Donnelly, AFP transferred in from Station Moose Jaw, replacing Cpl. Henning who was transferred to Edgar.

21 Jul 59

Routine - 1530 hours. A report received that LAC Gorman, PMQ 53, on leave had neglected to shut off the electric fan in the kitchen. The writer accompanied by LAW Rye gained entrance and turned off the fan.
Discipline - 0235 hours. A check of PMC’s parked behind the guard room revealed that a PMC bearing Station Plate number 272 had the keys in the ignition. The keys were removed for safety and notified that one was a PMQ key fitting PMQ 55 garage. Tenant Cpl. Alain. PMQ property of Mr. Cox, employed by Annapolis Valley Construction - boarding at Cpl. Alains.

22 Jul 59

PMQ Area - 1800 hours. S/L Boyczuk reported that Cpl. Day’s and LAC Reeve’s children had dumped their garbage can onto the street. Parents informed and arrangements made to have same picked up.

Fire - 1845 hours. Fire in PMQ 58 sounded alarm. Burnt pot of candy.
Station Alert - 2055 hours. Station Alert sounded. AFP to secure area and man the Operations gates.

Air Defence Alert - 2045 hours. Air Defence Alert sounded. AFP assumed duties at the Operations Building gates.

Visitors - 1130 hours. Girls softball team from RCAF Station Greenwood arrived on unit. Participated in sports against the airwomen of this unit.

Emergency - 2225 hours. F/L Rehder Orderly Officer, requested for the master key to the hospital as an Airwoman was sick and LAW Carlson required entrance to the hospital. The Medical assistant who has the key was off the station.

Traffic Accident - 0255 hours. Mrs. MacDonnell residing approximately 5 miles south of RCAF Station Beaverbank, informed AFP that a PMC had left the road colliding with a stone culvert. Air Force Police and medical personnel to the scene. Car driven by 136400W LAW Barbara Isaacs - taken to HMCS Stadacona.
Loss of Keys - 1310 hours. Mr. William Powers, employed in the Officers Bar reported the loss of keys to the various liquor lock ups. Investigated - nil results. Locks changed.

Repairs - The unit Fix it crew at the guard room repairing the required fixtures etc.

LAC Sobey received notification that he was tentatively selected for an overseas transfer.

Parking Lot Lights - C&E informed that the lights in the parking lot which are controlled by automatic clock device be reset to compensate for earlier darkness. Mr. Rainforth complied.

Security Check - F/L Chipman and the undersigned on a Security check of the Operations Building - all in order.

10 Aug 59

Traffic Mishap - LAC Blanchard operating a service vehicle near Ketch Harbour, Halifax County reported that he came upon a wire stretched across the highway - applied his brakes and caused Mrs. Churchill, passenger, to collide with the dash of the vehicle. Mrs. Churchill interviewed and a statement obtained omitting any claim against the crown. RCMP informed of the above incident.

12 Aug 59

Loss I Card - 1105 hours. WO2 Foster reported the loss of his Identification Card. WO2 Foster stated that he last used the I Card in Halifax while making a purchase. Inquiries revealed the I Card was left at Singer Sewing Machine Halifax. I card returned to WO2 Foster.
Parking - S/L Boyczuk informed AFP that Annapolis Valley Construction are prohibited from parking on grass area near the school. Traffic tickets to be issued to any offenders.

13 Aug 59

Discipline - 1600 hours. Mr. Gerald Lively, cleaner, interviewed and searched. An open bottle of rum discovered on him. Mr. Lively under the influence of alcohol. Was later paraded before the CAdO and awarded a suspension of five working days.

15 Aug 59

Illegal Entrance - 0045 hours. Mr. James Irving, GOSWELL casual employee was apprehended trespassing on DND property. Appeared in Court and awarded $10.00 and $4.00 costs.
Discipline - Mr. Austin Deon, Mrs. Alain’s father signed a complaint stating that Mr. JI Goswell had entered PMQ 55 during the morning of 15 Aug 59 without authority. Waiting Cpl. Alain’s return before a legal action will be taken against Goswell.

18 Aug 59

Discipline - LAC LeBlanc Bar Steward paraded before S/L Boyczuk Acting CO and awarded $20.00 fine for drinking while on duty.

22 Aug 59

Construction - Authority received from the CAdO to construct a sign bearing Royal Canadian Air Force Police - which will be erected in front of the guard room. Also a Pass Board to be used in the Operations Building.
Security - 0800 hours - Orderly Officer informed the AFP & Commissionaires of 3 members of the Soviet Embassy touring Nova Scotia in a 1957 medium blue Meteor sedan. Ontario license No. F1149 on the 24 and 25 Aug 59.
Theft - 1600 hours. LAC Bonnefant on life guard duties at the swimming pool during a swim meet between the Unit and YMCA at St. Mary’s, Halifax reported the theft of his civilian leather jacket. Later recovered.

23 Aug 59

Security - 1045 hours. Noted that young children from PMQ enter the theatre via the open window and unlock the front door. Door secured and windows locked.

24 Aug 59

Discipline - Complaint received from 220829 LAC AA Gorman reported that Cpl. St Onge had accused him of theft while employed in the Station Hobby Garage. Still under investigation.

26 Aug 59

Accident - 1030 hours. A report received from Mrs. Mountain employee at the Unit Grocery Store that the Sunbeam Bread delivery truck had backed into the fire alarm box by the grocery store causing damage to the alarm box. Mr. Fred Lack Zong, driver interviewed. Cpl. Lockart informed to test the alarm. Only slight damage to the alarm box door. A replacement actioned for and Mr. Zong volunteered to pay for any costs.
Fire - 1545 hours. Fire alarm sounded. False alarm in the Operations Building. The carpenters employed in the Operations Building were cutting lumber which caused a lot of smoke and the alarm was set off by FS McGrath.

30 Aug 59

Traffic Accident - 0200 hours. 237939 LAC Robert Charles MacDougall driving his PMC left the road and overturned approximately 2 5/8 miles from the unit. LAC MacDougall admitted in the Victoria General hospital, Halifax NS, with undetermined injuries at this time.

Conference - 1030 hours. Conference at Headquarters to discuss the future defence against vulnerability tests.
Visitor - F/O Allison from ADCHQ inspecting the accounts at headquarters.
Drunken Airman - 2350 hours. LAC KD Jackson was found lying drunk on the Officer’s Mess lawn. N/S was called to check LAC Jackson.

Close Custody - Cpl. Collins placed in close custody.
Open Custody - Cpl. Collins and LAC Jackson both placed on Open Custody.
Traffic Accident - A car went off the Beaverbank Road. The driver proved to be a civilian from Kinsac. Mr. Chaddock. No one was hurt.

Loss of Radio - 1715 hours. AC Clements reported the loss of his radio from his room in Barrack Block #1.

Missing - Missing key from night cook key ring. The key to room #31 (Rations) which is a storeroom was reported to the AFP on duty. Later it was found that FS Brown had taken the key off the key ring the day before.
Insecure - F/O Tyson’s PMQ #37 back door was found open. It was secured by writer. Tyson’s are on leave.

Fire - Alarm rang over at the Rec. Hall. It proved to be a false alarm.
Fire - 1835 hours. Orderly Officer F/O Laing called to report a small fire had been set in the men’s washroom in the Rec. Centre.

Accident - 0325 hours. Reported by LAC Kyle that a car driven by LAC Calhoun had backed over the embankment at a gravel pit. The passengers were LAC Jackson, LAW Campbell, LAW McFadden and LAW Isaacs.

Damage - 1630 hours. FS Brown reported that the glass in the rear door leading to the Combined Mess was accidentally broken. AFP secured same with a piece of plywood. CE later repaired.

Discipline - FS Warren informed the Air Force Police that a message was received from Air Force Police Winnipeg that LAC Boyer AWA had surrendered. Message dispatched to Winnipeg that LAC Boyer return to RCAF Station Beaverbank unescorted.

Official Visit - The Honourable Mr. Stanfield, premier of Nova Scotia, officiating in the opening of the extension of the David Hornell School.

Discipline - 1800 hours. Cpl. Maletta, AFP met and escorted LAC Boyer from Halifax to RCAF Station Beaverbank NS.

Discipline - LAC Boyer paraded before the COpsO. Charged with being AWA 105 days 17 hours 15 minutes. Received 7 days detention to be served at Beaverbank.
Accident - LAC Hurber, FtrCop reported that a traffic accident occurred at Rockingham, suburb of Halifax between a service vehicle 1953 stake truck driven by LAC Bonevitch, passenger LAC Gilbert. Both injured and taken to Victoria General Hospital Halifax. Injuries received were as follows: LAC Bonevitch lacerations to the head. LAC Gilbert received fractured ribs. The vehicle was a complete write off.
Cleanliness - LAC Boyer detainee escorted to the Fire Hall every night for a bath and washing of clothes.

28 Oct 59

Lost - Telephone Linesmen Climbers & Belt reported stolen by LAC Peck. Recovered in his room. Found in the top of his locker.
Discipline - LAC Fraser, OPMSE Bus driver reported that a vehicle License No. Nova Scotia 24810 had trailed the RCAF Bus from the Beaverbank Windsor road junction into Halifax stopping at every bus stop along the way 20 Oct 59. A check with RCMP revealed that the car was registered with the Acadia Bus Lines.

Insecure - CAdO’s office door found unlocked. The AFP on duty finding everything in order locked it.
Hospital - 2255 hours. Ambulance taking LAW Chaloner into Stadacona hospital.

Lost - 0010 hours. Mrs. A Arsenault informed us her husband was missing since 1600 hours. He was out hunting and had not arrived home yet. He later showed up at 0235 hours.

Found - Cpl. Huntley found a coil of copper wire and two insulators in the bush at north gate.
Temporary Duty - 1st Lt. Bloom and Staff Sgt. Copp, USAF, reported in on seven days TD.
Insecure - 2350 hours. AFP on duty found Mr. Dolbec in the process of locking up refrigerator in the Sgts. Mess for LAC O’Conners who had forgotten to lock up the refrigerator. The AFP secured the refrigerator.

Lost - Two men reported lost while out hunting. A Mr. Guy Michaud and Mr. Lonas, a civilian cook employed at this unit. Both men later found.

Both now in University of Saskatchewan Hospital, Saskatoon, and LAC Bellamy transferred to NES Station Saskatoon for indefinite period.
