Section IV – Senior Controller

The following is an outline of the activities of the Senior Controller section for this period.

1 Dec 60

Commencing at 0001Z, the track designators and serial numbers for this sector underwent a change. The sector prefix is now "X" (X-Ray) with Redtape’s suffix being "B". Also the track numbers for this unit now run in a block (600-699). Exercise "Sioux Gold" produced nothing but surveillance for this unit. During the exercise very limited ECM was experienced.

Ten practice intercepts with CF-100s. STP exercise held.

3 Dec 60

Twelve practice intercepts with CF-100s. One unknown track in Bangor area IDFR by SAGE.

4 Dec 60

Eight practice intercepts with CF-100s/ One unknown track (A515) faded on west bound heading before being re-identified.

5 Dec 60

STP exercise held. FPS-502 caused trouble during the day. Remained unserviceable until mid day 6 Dec. ECM experienced from a/c in 26 NNR.

6 Dec 60

Boneyard 1 (EWU C-119) ran an ECM demonstration run. Nil fighter participation.

7 Dec 60

Two hours emergency maintenance required due to failure to CPS-6B antenna drive.

8 Dec 60

Unknown track carried for seven minutes in area just west of Sable Island. This track was strength four. Split into two tracks. Both IDFR by Boston. Emergency tone and squawk in Midwife area proved to be Golden Hawks. No trouble. NNR began news reports on T/T 148.

9 Dec 60

STP exercise held. Smoke in surveillance room caused by smoke filtering through cable ducts fro SAGE Annex construction area. No danger.

10 Dec 60

Emergency maintenance on 6B requested by the Techs. Bearing trouble in the 400 cycle generator made EW unserviceable for 20 minutes. ECM condition 1 from a/c working Boston area. STP exercise held. Flight following and handover to Shalamar control of VC156 carrying CAS from Halifax to Downsview.

11 Dec 60

One unknown IDFR by Boston.

12 Dec 60

STP exercise held. Severe snow storm in area. Living-off personnel excused duty.

13 Dec 60

Living -out personnel excused duty in the afternoon because of blowing snow. Special 16 (IL-18) landed at Sydney on flight from Goose Bay to Havana, Cuba. Aircraft and passengers remained in Sydney overnight.

14 Dec 60

Special 16 overflew this area enroute to Havana. Close liaison maintained between this unit and Bangor while this a/c was in our area. Two CF-100s from Chatham given surveillance on a strike mission against Bonaventure fifty miles south of Halifax.

Insecurity - 2050 hours. Door #37 of the Combined Mess found unlocked. 1 case of liquor and 12 cases of beer inside. Determined to belong to Sgts. Mess and securing action taken.

Loss of Blanket - 0230 hours. LAC Bytham reported one issue red blanket missing from Airmen’s barracks.

3 Dec 60

Confiscated Counterpane - 0020 hours. One RCAF counterpane confiscated from car of LAC J Spurr.

6 Dec 60

PMC Accident - 1500 hours. Report received that AC1 Perkins on transfer to Station Beaverbank from Station Clinton had been involved in an accident at Bass River NS at 0900 hours, 6 Dec 60. Perkins required medical attention. Estimated damage to his vehicle of $100.00.

7 Dec 60

Investigation - AFP checking report that civilians at Cole Harbour, NS were in possession of RCAF issue parkas. It was found that these items had been purchased through war surplus stores.

9 Dec 60

Fire Alarm - 0435 hours. Fire Alarm sounded. Smoke smelled in Operations Building. Investigation determined that it originated from heaters used at the construction site adjacent to the building.

Insecurity - 2010 hours. Door to Accounts section, Orderly Room found insecure.

13 Dec 60

Accident Investigation - 0830 hours. F/O Buckle reported that his car had been damaged while it was parked in the Operations Building parking lot. Subsequent investigation determined that Mr. Cameron (civilian employee) had been in collision with complainant’s vehicle.
PMC Accident - 1514 hours. RCMP reported that a car driven by LAC Perry had gone off the road at Lower Sackville, NS at approximately 0600 hours. Perry and Cpl. Grantmyre were injured and taken to Stadacona hospital. LAC Jackson and LAW Duguid other passengers in the car were uninjured. Car considered to be a write off.

15 Dec 60

Insecurity - 2240 hours. North door of Station hospital insecure at this time.

17 Dec 60

Insecurity - 1945 hours. CO’s entrance to Administration Building found insecure.

21 Dec 60

Fire - 2035 hours. Small brush fire started by Department of Highways employees on the Nicholson Road at rear of CE Section was extinguished. No fire alarm sounded. Sgt. Coolen attending from Fire Hall.

23 Dec 60

Dog Complaint - 1000 hours. LAC RA Moore reported that a dog owned by LAC Staples had attacked his son resulting in medical attention being required. Dog examined for rabies and certificate of good health obtained from veterinary.

24 Dec 60

PMC Accident - LAC Reid (Comm Tech) after being refused exit from the unit at the main gate, drove his PMC off the unit by the back road at rear of station hospital. Subsequently had an accident on the Beaverbank Road, slight damage to vehicle. No injuries to himself or passengers - LAC Bates, LAC Jackson and LAW Duguid. LAC Reid was charged and awarded a $10.00 fine and 7 days CC.

PMC Accident - Sgt. CF Baker reported that he was involved in an accident on the Hammonds Plains Road on the 30 Dec 60. No injuries resulted.

Drunkeness - 0030 hours. F/L McLachlan called and stated that LAC D Snider was being held in the City Jail for being drunk. LAC Snider was let out of jail on bail at 0600 hours on the 4 Jan 61.

5 Jan 61

Insecure - 0130 hours. The main entrance door to the Senior NCOs Mess could not be secured as it was frozen with ice and snow.
Animal - 1300 hours. Writer brought a dog belonging to Cpl. Alain down to the guard house as the dog was bothering school children.

6 Jan 61

AWA - 1300 hours. FS Hellard called to inform us that LAC RW Blanchard has been AWA since 0800 hours 4 Jan 61.

8 Jan 61

AWA - LAC RW Blanchard returned to the base. Was placed on charge and received extra duties.

Accident - 2030 hours. LAC CE Thompson, FtrCop this unit reported that he was involved in a PMC accident at 2345 hours 7 Jan 61 in Springhill, NS. Nil injuries to LAC Thompson and approximately $60.00 damage to his PMC.

Key Survey - Cpl. Donnelly and LAC Townsend doing a Key survey at the Operations building.

18 Jan 61

Insecure - 0145 hours. Duty AFP found the Liquor Cabinet in the Officer’s Mess open and all liquor gone. A check with the OO FS Warren revealed that F/O Johnston had told the bar steward to leave it open for some repair work.

24 Jan 61

Incident - 0115 hours. LAC Reids PMC slid into the ditch between the Operations Building and the Transmitter site. LAC Reid didn’t have any snow tires or chains on and the road was too slippery.
Theft - 1200 hours. FS Desjardins reported a theft of a pillow from room 212 officers quarters which had occurred during the weekend. This pillow as noted missing at 1600 hours 23 Jan 61. The pillow was recovered later and turned over to the SWO.
Incident - 1600 hours. LAC Doyle’s Tool Box returned to him from Mont Apica. LAC Doyle had reported the Tool Box missing on 2 Dec 60.

Poll Tax - 1030 hours. AC Tanner escorting the Poll Tax collectors up to see the Commanding Officer.
Transportation - 1400 hours. Cpl. Skillicorn travelling to Shearwater to pick up the new CAdO F/L Majocha.

Transportation - 1000 hours. Cpl. Skillicorn proceeding back to Shearwater with F/L Majocha.
Inspection - The writer with the SWO on inspection of the Airmen’s Barracks.

Inspection - LAW Rye checking the Airwomen’s Barracks for lost red blankets.

28 Jan 61

Insecure - Duty AFP found Door No. 23 corridor between Airmen’s and Officer’s Mess leading to the Combined Mess insecure. Complete area and mess checked and door secured. FS Brown informed.

30 Jan 61

Accident - LAC W Fraser, MSE called and stated he had struck Mr. Victor Lively’s son with his PMC approximately 2 ½ miles south of the Station. Fraser took Mrs. Lively and son to Dr. LeBruns at Bedford. The child had only suffered a slight bump behind the left ear which wouldn’t give him any trouble. Mrs. Lively stated she did not blame LAC Fraser.
Insecure - Duty APF found the Solarium door in the Hospital unlocked. Interior checked and secured. Col. Lilje informed.

31 Jan 61

Animal - Writer brought a dog belonging to LAC Pouliot down to the guardhouse. LAC Pouliot informed.
Incident - Mr. L Leblanc, a carpenter at the CE section reported a dog had tore his overshoe while he was walking in the PMQ area. The dog was found to be owned by Cpl. Finlay.

Replacement - 0800 hours. Cpl. Meurant Commissionaire reported for duty taking Cpl. Huntley’s place.
Loss - F/O Morrow reported loss of a tube tester from the Electronic Stores.

PMC Accident - F/L Symington reported that he had an accident at the HQ’s parking lot. His brakes locked as he attempted to make a left turn into the HQ’s parking lot. The car proceeded to slide and damaged the #6 Hose Reel Building.

Replacement - Commissionaire Cook reported for duty replacing Commissionaire Lively.
Investigation - 0830 hours. NCO i/c AFP was requested by the CAdO to institute an investigation into the disturbance in the Airwomen’s Quarters by an alleged Male personnel in their quarters. Investigation revealed the following male pwesonnel in AW Quarters on the 1 Feb 61. LAC’s Perry, Baxter, Melanson, Dakers and Byham. The girls involved were LAW’s Shaw, Murray, Moore and Hilchey. LAW Till caused a disturbance in LAW Goyette’s room and when asked to leave grabbed LAW Goyette by her jyama top.

Barred From this Station - Commanding Officer instructed the AFP that the former LAW VD Brown is barred from this station.
Alert - 1410 hours. Siren sounded for the Operations Alert.

Detention - The following persons were paraded before F/L Jewitt Acting COpsO and awarded ten days detention: LAC’s Byham, Melanson and Baxter. LAC Perry awarded eight days detention.

7 Feb 61

Ambulance - 0520 hours. The ambulance departed unit for Stadacona hospital with Mr. Matt Prim a civilian on this unit.
Detention - LAC Dakers was paraded before S/L Keele, CTSO and awarded eight days detention. The following airwomen were paraded before F/L Jewitt and awarded Confined to Camp as follows: LAW Shaw - ten days, LAW’s Moore, Hilchey, Murray and Till - seven days. 1430 hours. LAC Moore proceeding to Camp Gagetown, NB with the Airmen undergoing detention.

Missing Items - 1200 hours. FS Desjardins reported five air mattresses missing from the Airmen’s barracks.
Missing Items - 1500 hours. The missing mattresses were recovered.

Speeding - F/O Stock reported that the Halifax Transfer Company truck driving through PMQ area came around a corner speeding and slid across the road sideways. The driver was informed of his speeding infraction and his company informed.

Incident - Cpl. Moffitt reported to the Guardhouse and stated that his dog was foaming at the mouth and throwing fits. He asked if he could have the dog shot. Duty AFP took the dog to the dump and killed it with a 9mm.
Incident - 0200 hours. Cpl. Church, OC reported to Duty AFP that the record reflector in the 8 Lanterns Room was broken by Cpl. Deveau, FtrCop by accident. The SWO was later informed.

13 Feb 61

Inspection - 0930 hours. The new CAdO F/L Majocha arrived at the guardhouse for inspection.
Inspection - 1630 hours. Captain Leppard Corps of Commissionaires arrived on unit for inspection of the Commissionaires. Commissionaire Cook was suspended for the day.

15 Feb 61

Fire - Sgt. Bast discovered Richard Mathurin (son of Cpl. Mathurin) and John Warren (son of FS Warren) setting a fire in the Rec. Centre downstairs underneath the south stairway. Sgt. Bast extinguished the blaze. A slight damage to floor and two table and two tables stored there. Both boys taken home and parents informed.

Incident - LAC Knickle interviewed with reference to reported loss of Hot Water Tank. Tank was returned to CE Section by LAC Knickle.
Replacement - Commissionaire Curtis reported for duty taking Commissionaire Cook’s place.

Drinking While on Duty - While on patrol near the CE section the writer observed Mr. Davis, Pump and Sewage, staggering as he walked passed the CE section. The writer carried out a check and noted that the man had suffered from indulgence in alcoholic beverages. Further investigation was carried out.

PMC Accident - LAC Stanley, Fire Fighter, reported being involved in a car accident. LAC Stanley stated he had parked his car off the Beaverbank Road and a car driven by Mr. Smith (civilian this unit) slid on the icy road and hit into LAC Stanley’s car.

Replacement - Cpl. Croft, Commissionaire, reported for duty replacing Commissionaire Meurant.

21 Feb 61

Accident - LAC Flemming, while playing basketball in the Rec. Centre, went through one of the windows in the entrance door to the gym. LAC Flemming’s right arm was cut so the ambulance took him into Stadacona Hospital.

26 Feb 61

PMC Accident - 2000 hours. Sgt. Barber’s son reported car accident immediately south of Station on Beaverbank Road. Cpl. Skillicorn investigating and RCMP immediately called. Cars driven by Sgt. Barker and LAC Schroeder were involved. Mrs. Barker, LAC Calhoun and LAW Calhoun were taken to Stadacona hospital with undetermined injuries. Cars were a complete write off.
Instructions - 2330 hours. FS Richard, OO advised that no personnel be allowed to drive off the unit due to the road conditions.

Insecurity - Whilst on patrol the duty AFPman found the kitchen door in the MIR unlocked. This allowed access to the MIR proper. The pharmacy was also insecure at this time. Nursing Sister contacted. MIR checked and secured.

Discipline - Civilian, Mr. Fred Boutlier, Station Steam Plant, was checked at the main gate by the duty AFPman for attempting to operate his PMC whilst under the influence of alcohol.

Accident - CPO, Mr. Spinny, reported to this office that he had witnessed a dog being struck by a speeding vehicle on Beaverbank Road, south of the unit. The vehicle involved failed to stop following the accident. Complaint investigated.

Discipline - Duty AFPman had occasion to check 42553H ABRM Fritton, RCN, Albro Lake at the unit main gate. Subject was attempting to take beer off the Station. AB Fritton is now on the Station "Black List".

Theft - Report received by this office from CEO, F/O Johnson, to the effect that a person or persons unknown had made off with a quantity of liquor and beer which was left over from a section party held in the Station Rec. Centre. Investigation initiated.
Chapel Opening - AFP staff assisted in the official opening of the new Protestant chapel.

Insecurity - Whilst on foot patrol the duty AFPman found the Officer’s Mess Fridge unlocked. LAC Ayres, duty bar steward, was contacted and an inventory check was immediately made. All was in order. Fridge secured.

Discipline - LAC F Tanner was paraded before the CAdO, F/L Majocha, charged under section 114, NDA, found guilty and was awarded a fine of $25.00 and 14 days CC.

Arrest - LAC Louis Leblanc was placed under open arrest by F/O Wenaas for having reported for work at Operations whilst under the influence of alcohol.
Discipline - 61697W LAW Carol Duguid was paraded before the COpsO, S/L Bruner charged under sections 118 and 88, NDA. Found guilty and was awarded a fine of $15.00.
Insecurity - Whilst on patrol the duty AFPman found the north door to the Station Headquarters building unlocked. Building checked out and secured.

Discipline - LAC Edward Thompson, FtrCop, was placed under open arrest. Authority - F/O Janes, for having been absent from his place of duty.
New Personnel - Commissionaire Daniel Joseph Fetinko reported in for duty relieving Commissionaire F Purvis.

Discipline - LAC E Thompson was paraded before the COpsO, S/L Bruner, charged under section 81 of the NDA. Found guilty and was awarded a fine of $25.00 and seven days extra work.

Fire - 1820 hours. Small bush fire in woods rear of PMW area. Station Fire Department attended and blaze extinguished. Workmen in area during the day believed responsible. No damage.

Theft - 1630 hours. Station Barber, Mr. W Creelman reported that approximately $17.00 was stolen from the Barber Shop during pm of this date.

Discipline - 0240 hours. LAW Shaw went through the barrier driving her PMC without signing out. Also disobeyed AFPman’s instructions to halt.

Insecurity - 2250 hours. Station Beauty Parlor door insecure. Locked after check made.
Trespassing - Two RCN personnel from Albro Lake, observed entering unit other than by main gate. Unable to apprehend as they departed hastily. CO Albro Lake informed.

Insecurities - North door of Administration Building, inside door of CO’s office and main door of Supply section found insecure on this date during check.
Fire Hazard - A fire hazard discovered by duty AFPman in cleaners storeroom in Administration Building was reported to the Fire Hall who will action.

Accident - Cpl. B Veale, reported that her PMC had been damaged by a hit and run driver - either on the 25th or 26th May. Investigation being conducted in this matter.

Fire - Bush fire reported by F/L Ryan in woods north of PMQ area. Fire Department attending with other personnel called out for occasion. Blaze extinguished. Believed caused by NS Power Company employee working in area on previous day.

Damage - Report of damage to a wall in the Airmen’s Canteen games room was received. Investigation revealed that LAC Belanger was responsible, however it was not willful damage.
