The 15-J1C was operational during the entire month.
The Surveillance Section remained on a three shift, seven day work week during the month of May. It is anticipated that a four crew system will go into effect 1 June. One 27370 was lost due to normal rotation, and five 27330’s were gained.
Lt. Castleberry and Lt. Rickard returned to Goose Air Base early in the month for accomplishment of flying proficiency requirements.
Section II – C&E Maintenance.
Radar Maintenance
(a) - Red time was logged on the FPS-3 for the first time in over two months. The main difficulty was a sudden loss of lower beam video immediately following a PM period. The trouble appears to have been cumulative as the replacement of numerous parts and components were required to obtain a satisfactory MDS. The TR, ATR, and pre-TR tubes, crystals, stalo, and pre-amplifier were changed. As each item was changed the MDS increased from 2 to 5db. The reason for the sudden failure of such a large number of parts is not known. MDS was normal at the beginning of the PM period.
Portion of this section illegible.
Communications Maintenance
On 14 may 1956 work was completed on the consolidation of the switchboard with the teletype section. A new work schedule was put into effect and the number of personnel required to operate was cut from eight to five. This allowed three men to return to work in their original AFSC. This action does not decrease the efficiency, however, and when this section reaches MDS strength a higher degree of efficiency can be obtained.
The Receiver Room is being rewired completely with all Keying and Audio lines being replaced and rewired into main terminal block. All antennas lead-ins have been rerouted and coaxial fittings checked and replaced if necessary. One AT/197GR antenna was erected in order to provide more flexibility with the back up receivers. Two long wire antennas have been installed for the Ship-to-shore H.F. facility which will be used in the coming shipping season.
Section III – AIO Maintenance
Illegible sections.
(4) M&R Section:
Maintenance and Repair, in addition to maintaining the building, floors, roof, the interior and exterior of all functional operations in a constant state of repair, accomplished the added job of running the pumping process involved in pumping the oil from the beach site tanks to the site storage tank. This operation required the constant attention of a three man team from the M & R Section during the 24 hour, six day operation which started 22 may 56. It was previously estimate this job would require eleven days but efficient operation shortened the time element considerably. In accomplishing this function the tanks at the beach site will be emptied and made ready to receive the shipment of fuel oil expected to arrive at this installation late in July.
Section IV – Supply
This section received one (1) supply man in AFSC 64173, and four (4) supply men in AFSC 64131 this month.
On 11 May T/Sgt. ??
Careful screening and correcting has just been completed on the new VAL and is ready for forwarding to Materiel Office at Goose Air Base.
Section V – Miscellaneous
The second half of the 64th Air Division Inspection Team consisting of M/Sgt. Vanlandingham and T/Sgt. Barker arrived at the site soon after the first of the month. This part of the team conducted inspections of the Personnel Records and Supply functions. This completed the annual inspection of this unit.
The Administrative section was busy during the month performed usual administrative duties. This section is 50% manned at this time. The Chief Clerk, AFSC 70270, was lost through rotation. One apprentice classification specialist, AFSC 73230 is enroute to join the squadron.
Bingo games were initiated as an entertainment function this month. The games are held each Monday evening in the dining hall. Games are operated on a non-profit basis, and the entire income from each games is given away in the form of merchandise prizes. This function has gained in popularity during the month of May, and is expected to continue as a popular pastime.
