The 920th AC&W Squadron had been located at McAndrew Air Force Base (adjacent to the Argentia Naval Air Station) between July 1953 and November 1954. They were using the CPS-5D search radar at that time. A decision was made to change McAndrew from an Air Force base and hand it over to the US Navy. As a result of this change, the 920th AC&W was scheduled to be moved to another location.
The 920th AC&W left McAndrew for Resolution Island in September 1954. The unit was scheduled to obtain the FPS-3 search radar when it made this move, but I do not know whether this change in radar equipment ever took place. The station at Resolution Island was eventually phased out on November 1, 1961.
