1998 - North Warning System - Larry Wilson

The original Pinetree Line radar station was located very close to the community of Cartwright. The existing North Warning System (NWS) radar site is approximately 30 miles from the community of Cartwright. This NWS complex is a Long Range Radar (LRR) installation and it was established in November, 1988. The site is unmanned and it is supported by a nearby Logistic Support Site (LSS). The complex is known as Cartwright, Labrador and the site number of this NWS complex is LAB-6. Cartwright one of 11 existing LRR locations which forms the NWS. The LRR complex at Cartwright makes use of the General Electric AN/FPS-117 radar equipment which is a multi-elevational and multi-target phased-array type radar.

The NWS military complex at Cartwright is a restricted military site and permission must be obtained from the Director General Aerospace Engineering Program Management (Radar and Communications Systems) - also known as DGAEPM (R&CS) before going there. Cartwright has a bush road from the site to the community, but the LAB-6 complex is normally serviced by helicopter from Goose Bay. The bush road is not maintained.
