- M/Sgt Frank Busits by a snowcat outside of the BMEWS facility - November 1961.
The BMEWS site was operational and we commuted to the site by snowcat. I remember that one day a big storm came up, however, it was near freezing and the snow was wet. The snowcat would dig into the snow instead of riding above it. We had to traverse the hills and soon lost ight of the road since it was snowing heavily. The Marconi Tech Rep let out a scream when we went over a drift as he thought we were going over the cliff. Not making any forward progress we stopped and weaited for the storm to clear. Goose Bay said it would abate around 11 pm, which it did. I remember how lovely the glowing radar dome looked after not being able to see more than 10 feet for several hours.

- The C-54 that was used for the TACAN evaluation - September 1961.
In the late summer of 1961, a C-54 arrived to run an evaluation of the TACAN navigation facility. I was lucky to get a ride on this flight and it was the only time I left the area in the year I was assigned at Saglek - though I didn't go very far.

- This is one of the lakes in the valley below the upper camp to the south - August 1961.
We took a hike down to the lakes south of the upper camp and then down to the Atlantic. I remember that there were lots of low growing shrubs and wildflowers. I think we came upon the aircraft that crashed in 1942.

- A beautiful inlet of the ocean filled with all sorts of alpine vegetation - August 1961.
It wasn't until a few years after I left Saglek that I became interested in the natural world and I regret that I did not take advantage of the opportunity to study this unique flora and fauna while I was there.

- This is a fissure in the ice to the west of the lower site - May 1961.
As the temperature warmed and the snow melted, several airmen from the Comm Detachment hiked down near the lower camp.

- M/Sgt Frank Busits ascending the cliff - May 1961.
It was kind of scary. We skirted the cliff and came to an area where we could no go forward. We had slif down some slippery rocks getting to this point so backtracking was not an option. The only way out was up.

- A view of the upper site from the west - May 1961.
These photos were the first ones taken away from the site. Since arriving at Saglek in February 1961, we were more or less confined to the site because of weather. A mild day induced several airmen from the Pole Vault detachment to take a hike in the area of the upper camp.
