St. Anthony, NF
Photographs

Jerry Swanson served as a Radar Operator with the USAF at St. Anothony in 1960-1961. He has just completed a nostalgic "return trip" to St. Anthony and he reported as follows:

St. Anthony is really a beautiful little town (2,500-3,500) with one traffic light and almost all the small roads we used to walk on are now paved for automobile traffic. It still has a pretty busy harbor. The Northern Ranger was in port one of the days while we were there. The old Hospital is still there but a new Hospital was built in the late 1970s so the old one is used for something else in connection with the new one. These two buildings are joined by a closed in walk way. The St. Anthony Inn has been torn down and was replaced with a private residence.

We saw many tourists in the area, even a couple from San Jose, CA. Tourism has become a large part of the economy now that the Cod fishing industry has been closed. We met a caravan of twenty two motor homes and fifth wheelers as we were leaving the area. As you can probably tell, I just love it there. I even thought about joining the local Chamber of Commerce.
