DAILY DIARY
10 RADIO DETACHMENT - CAPE SCOTT, BC.
January 13, 1943 to December 31, 1943

13 Jan 43

Weather: Very windy with scattered rain. Some of the equipment necessary to complete the CHL has been shipped to Spider Island in error. P/O Beckett and P/O Stephenson are to go to Spider Island as soon as possible to get this equipment. High seas prevented the "BC Star" coming up today. Work continued on the operational equipment. A short circuit in the Andrews Cable and on the relay line to the gantry was discovered. The faults in the Thyratron were rectified and the unit is now ready to be set up. Another power line failure occurred in the afternoon.

14 Jan 43

Weather: Continued wind. Weather difficulties made it impossible to effect repairs on the power line. As an emergency measure the kitchen and the Administration building were put on No 4 feeder and all personnel were warned that a power emergency existed and that power must be conserved. Rough water again prevented mail from coming in at Cape Scott. Further difficulties in getting the operational equipment working were encountered when it was found that the short circuit in the Andrews Cable was due to water in the coupling unit. The whole coupling unit will have to be taken down and dried. On the progressive side, the Thyratron unit was set up and works very well.

15 Jan 43

Weather: Much cooler and stronger winds. The "BC Star" will not attempt to come to Cape Scott until the wind lets up. The road crew worked in the afternoon and got the stretch between the two sections of plank in fairly good shape. Cpl Corbin and the telephone line crew reported from Holberg. The value of their work was evidenced by the clarity of the reception. The coupling unit and gantry were dismantled and attempts made to dry them. This latter problem is a pressing one. Coal Harbour notified us that they had three Radio Mechanics on TD. These men are to report to this Detachment on TD to assist in setting up the operational unit.

16 Jan 43

Weather: Very heavy snow storm during night; drop in temperature about 25 degrees; heavy north wind. At about 1200 hours the security guard at the Operations site reported a small freighter proceeding northward through the channel. After passing through the straits and getting out into the north water, she turned around and headed south back through the straits. When about one-half mile southeast of Scott Island, the ship started to circle. She was listing very badly to starboard. After circling several times, she slipped under the waves and disappeared from sight. No attempt seems to have been made to launch lifeboats. The vessel sank at about 1320 hours. The disappearance was reported immediately to Coal Harbour. A Stranner arrrived from Coal Harbour at 1430 hours, but could find no trace of survivors or wreckage. The "BC Star" arrived at 1450 hours. She landed supplies and then left to go on patrol at the scene of the sinking. Search parties composed of Detachment personnel patrolled the beaches during the evening but could find no trace of wreckage or survivors. Arrivals on the "BC STAR" were F/Sgt. Brett (Diesel Fitter) a WOG, and three RDF/O. On the technical side, the Andrews Cable was removed from the receiver and brought down to the Station, proper, in an attempt to dry it.

17 Jan 43

Weather: Clear with very high winds; temperature still around 15-20 degrees. The sudden drop in temperature resulted in frozen pipe lines. A RCN Corvette and the "BC Star" continued searching, throughout the day, for any signs of wreckage with, as far as could be learned, no success. Because of weather conditions, work had to be suspended on the technical equipment.

18 Jan 43

Weather: Wind shifted to West, heavy rains, warmer. Word was received from Mr. Ronning a trapper at Holberg, concerning the ship which sank off the point on Saturday. She was a small freighter carrying too heavy a cargo. She was abandoned before she started to sink. Six survivors landed at Raft Cove at about 1900 hours Saturday and were not found until 1330 hours Sunday. Two of the six had frozen to death and two othes were in very bad shape. In all fifteen men were lost. The two survivors are to stay at Ronning's shack at Raft Cove until the arrival of a Navy boat.

20 Jan 43

Weather: Continued cold with high winds. The continued cold weather is causing a great deal of trouble with the water system. The "BC Star" was again storm bound at Port Hardy. These high seas, and consequent irregular trips by the supply boat, are making the ration situation serious. There is only enough regular rations for one more day.

21 Jan 43

Weather: Cold, wind not so high. The "BC Star" arrived at 1600 hours. Aboard were F/O McKinty from Western Air Command and the Paymaster from Coal Harbour. Also arriving were F/Sgt. Michael and Cpl. Selinger, replacing F/Sgt. Doutes in charge of installation, and three supernumerary Radio Mechanics. Rations and aerial equipment for the AT3 were unloaded. It was learned that the aircraft which we assumed was searching for wreckage and survivors from the "NORTH HOLME", was searching for an American aircraft which was believed to have been lost in this vicinity. F/Sgt. Brett and the High Rigger returned with the "BC Star".

22 Jan 43

Weather: Continued cold with snow. After a review of the situation, F/O McKinty expressed himself as satisfied with the general progress of the Detachment. Numerous small problems were discussed and solutions arrived at which should prove of no small assistance to the Detachment in the future. The ration situation is particularly annoying. Indents are now made direct to RCASC, Vancouver, but, it appears, we should be drawing rations from Coal Harbour. Any rations received from Coal Harbour, thus far, have been lacking both in quantity and quality.

23 Jan 43

Weather: Sunshine, no wind and above freezing. The water supply was exhausted today and we were forced to use the emergency pumping system. If the cold weather continues much longer, we will be totally without any source of water. In an effort to speed up going Operational, an effort is being made to secure Andrews Cable (2442) from Spider Island. This is the only present major obstacle in the way of going Operational. The wire for the AT3 remote control unit was strung today. This line should be ready for use in about three days.

24 Jan 43

Weather: Clear and cool. The water supply situation eased when a thaw resulted in the dam filling with water during the night. Except for men needed to carry on essential duties, all personnel were excused duty for the day. This is the first "day off" since January 1st. The "BC Star" was expected today but she did not come. In the evening a mess meeting was held and all personnel agreed to pay $1.50 monthly extra messing fees. Every effort is to be made to continue the high standard of meals set by the Construction Company.

25 Jan 43

Weather: Three inches of snow but quite mild. The installation party continued work on the CHL Feeder System and this should be finished in another day. One difficulty is that salt spray causes a great deal of corrosion. The remote control line for the AT3 was strung on poles to the camp and in another two days we should be able to pass "dry plots". No word again from the "BC Star" today.

26 Jan 43

Weather: South wind with showers; temperature up to about 40 degrees. The food situation is again becoming serious. To date we have been short-shipped something in excess of 420 rations. A signal was received today saying that the "BC Star" had made a "forced landing". The significance of this signal is rather hard to grasp. Mr Solomon and Mr McKinty made an inspection of the Operations Building and expressed themselves as satisfied with the general situation. The CHL Feeder System was completed today and the only thing now lacking is the Andrews Cable from Spider Island. This should arrive about the end of the week. The AT3 line up to the hill was completed today except for the installation of the remote contol unit in the Operations Building. An attempt was made to start the AT3 permanent aerial installation but the poles were too slippery for climbing.

27 Jan 43

Weather: Slightly warmer with scattered showers. There is still no news as to when the "BC Star" may be expected. The AT3 remote control unit was installed and worked perfectly. F/Sgt Michael and his installation party checked the receiver and transmitter for possible "bugs".

28 Jan 43

Weather: Clear and sunny; very light north wind. Again today, despite ideal conditions, the "BC Star" did not arrive. Coal Harbour gives no indication as to the reason for these non-appearances. The ration situation is very serious. There is no meat whatsoever. A party was sent to Cape Scott to try and find our missing cattle but they met with no success. An aircraft landed in Guise Bay but because we have no boat, we were unable to go out to it. F/Sgt Michael and his party repaired the u/s Andrews Cable today. It will still be necessary to repair this cable because the present arrangement is only a make-shift one. Echoes up to fifty miles were received in the evening before the phasing of feeders and aerials were completed which is a very good indication.

29 Jan 43

Weather: Sunny, no wind and warmer. The "Mermaid One" arrived at 1440 hrs with rations but no beef. AT3 supplies and Canteen supplies were also in the cargo. It was learned from the Master of the "Mermaid One" that the "BC Star" ran aground at Port Hardy and has had to go to Vancouver for repairs. The "Mermaid One" will service this Detachment until the return of the "BC Star". Parcels were received but no letter mail. The unsatisfactory mail service is definitely conducive to a high morale standard. the Marwell Consruction Co scow also landed and personnel of the Detachment assisted in loading it. As a token of appreciation, the Marwell Co donated thirty dollars to the Canteen Fund of the Detachment. F/O McKinty
